We used this during a recent trip to South Africa. The content was helpful, but the Kindle edition was tough to navigate. An index, or better yet, a search function, would have been ideal. We selected the Kindle version to facilitate our goal of packing light, but a print version would have been easier to use. The bookmark and highlighting features of the Kindle can only get you so far. The organization of this book did not seem to be well thought out, and that deficiency would exist in both print and electronic versions. For example, when looking for restaurants in Cape Town, we had to first select a neighborhood, which implied a familiarity with the region we did not have as first time visitors. At the end of the day, I found the information in this book to be helpful, but hard to access.

This book, as all the Frommer series, is very good to help you plan a trip. The recommendations are often the same as you will find on Tripadvisor which increase my confidence level, but in the book you get really detailed information with contact numbers and websites. They have maps of each area with the interest point marked on it, this is a great planning tool; you can really figure better in what order to schedule visits. Yes, other boks have more photos, this one definitely does not but that is why it's a good planner, it has INFORMATION. Those pretty DK books are nice to look at but useless to plan with. I would like to see them update more frequently but reality is that the information does not really change that often, so all in all the book is great.

I got this book for an upcoming trip to South Africa. I tried to get the last (2012) edition, but it's out of print. Too bad since I think Frommer's guides are way above the other travel guides currently in print. So, I settled for this 2009 edition. It's been great for mapping out or routes, tips on some of the best places to stay and avoid and many of the restaurants are still around too. The only downside is whenever a price is mentioned, you know it's not current. However, if you can use wifi along the way, you should be fine. What I particularly like about this book is that Frommer is not afraid to recommend one place over another. Many travel guides won't put themselves out there to do so and you are forced to do more research on your own to get answers. Frommer cuts through the chase and I appreciate it!

This was a good guide for information while traveling around South Africa. Was very helpful.

We are fans of Frommer's Guide books from previous trips and choose this book from Amazon.com without reviewing it the old fashioned way - browsing through the pages/sections. Too late we discovered the book barely mentioned our destination points: Pretoria (Tshwane), and a private game reserve bordering Kruger National Park. We missed the 'where to dine' suggestions and places of interest in/near Pretoria, which have been particularly helpful in the past.In addition, we found at least one map reference that sent the reader to a page that had no corresponding text to the map cross reference. We ended up leaving the book at home.

Actually used some of the suggestions for things to do, routes restaurant and hotels. Spent entire time in Cape Provinces and provided good basic information about an area with a paucity of written information.

i have enjoyed using it. Only Frommer and Lonely Planet have information on traveling in Southern Africa, andthis seems to be a no nonsense guide. Hopefully, now that Frommers has been resold, they will start writing andprinting more up to date books once more.

I admit I went to sleep listening to the entire thing (they say that is normal). But now that I know which tracks get to the beef, they are very good. They help to make you mindful (the book comes with a CD). The book is a bit boring but what is unique is it's not food plan and it's not quackery "you are getting sleepy" hypnosis. I put it on my IPOD and listen before bed. The net/net is that it makes you mindful during the day. It helped me give myself a Girl Scout cookie Samoa intervention (I normally eat pretty good but those Samoas are down right evil I tell you!). It worked. I heard about it from Dr. Mark Hyman's emails that I get (he is awesome as well) and Dr. Weil also did a plug on these guys. You do have to get past the corny parts "you can do it, yes you can" but it's worth it. I also like Belleruth Naparstek. Her voice is soothing and she has an entire series. So, if you are struggling or need adjusting, add this to your aresenal and just use it as time to relax. It may surprise you that it has some impact on your thinking (but I do recommend staying awake for tracks 6 & 7 where the real beef is).

I was pregnant when I purchased this, so wasn't really looking to lose weight. Something I read about it made me think I could channel the hypnosis for other goals, however--and I was right. I focused on curing my pregnancy-induced insomnia, improving my confidence at work, in addition to helping me keep my pregnancy weight gain under control. I fully believe this program helped in all these areas, and look forward to the time my new son allows me to use it again, this time for its intended purpose!

I was skeptical about this but thought it would be worth a shot. I was surprised how well this worked! I started to read the book but the material in the book seemed to be mostly common sense. I listened to the CD every night before bed and not only did it reduce my cravings and my urge to over-eat the next day, but it really helped me get a restful night's sleep. I wish there were more "chapters" on the CD. I definitely think this is worth a try.

I've bought hypnosis self-improvement tapes before and soon abandoned them. I was too impatient! This time I've discovered that persistence and repetion is the key. You really can change your subsconscious "tapes" but it is not a quick process. Just hang in there, and repeat, repeat.. As to this book and CD set, I did not find the book very enlightening. If you are completely new to the subject, perhaps you will. However, the CD is GREAT! Mr. G. has one of the most soothing voices I have ever heard from a hypnotist. He does not do very lengthly inductions, which I like. He also has another set of three CDs on Self-Hypnosis for Weight Loss that doesn't come with a book. Those CDs are different from the one that comes with this book and are just as good. If you are really serious, I recommend buying them as well. Good Luck!

I got this book with cd a couple weeks ago and I absolutely love it! I listen to the cd at night before turning in and in the morning before I get up. I have noticed that I make better food choices and I dont get down on myself any more. To tell the truth, I wouldn't be without it! I haven't weighed or measured myself as of yet, and may not do so, but give it time to be a lifestyle change!

Really not had time to use it but I did listen to the CD. Very relaxing. Know of someone who has used it and lost 90 lbs by being consistent and listing to the cd. I sure hope it works for me.

this book and accompanied cd offer a way to get emotional control over your eating habits and reach what they call "your perfect weight". I have been using it for about a month and the more I use it, the less I eat (portion size) and the less cravings I have. I am convinced it works, plus it is super relaxing.

The book is great and inspiring. I like best having the CD with it so I can review each day what I have learned before I go to sleep. I think there are two keys to weight loss that holds over time and one is setting an intention, the other is maintaining the motivation. The book helped me to set my intention and the CD helps me keep my motivation. I look forward to seeing myself at the weight that is best for me and hearing the compliments of others as I feel good about myself.

I love this collection of letters. Sylvia Beach was a hero to me as I love books. What could be more romantic, perhaps, than owning a bookshop in Paris in the time between the wars. She met every one and helped many. Ms. Walsh did a great job of footnoting to enlighten the reader. One gets a good sense of Sylvia Beach--her humor, her integrity, her intellect. I wish Woody Allen had had his character meet her in her bookshop in Midnight in Paris as she was to me a more important figure in that era than Gertrude Stein! I only wish there had been more letters!

These precious letters from Sylvia Beach to some of the world's most important literary figures of the last century are essential reading for anyone whose interest lies in the expat, modernist movement in 20th Century Paris. Such a wonderful peek into the past though Sylvia's own voice. HIghly recommended.

This book is a collection of letters with no analysis of the events the letters represent. I read the letters of Alice B. Toklas last year and the author carefully reconstructed some of the relevant events and relationships that were characterized in the letters and this made it a much more interesting read.

Letters sent from Paris and other points by Sylvia Beach to her many friends, over many years. It helps that many of these friends became giants of literature, such as Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway.While Ms. Beach was a good writer, these letters tend to be of a more family, friendship, or book-business nature. Not much talk of current politics or general social trends. For example, no discussion of her time while interned in France during World War II. However any one interested in the literary life and personalities--especially Joyce--of Paris in the first half of the last century would profit from this book.Keri Walsh has done a superior editing job with this collection of letters. Her occasional comments on the text are clear, unobtrusive, and helpful.(I especially enjoyed this book because it came to me as a gift from my youngest son, whose own birthday happens to fall on Bloomsday. He bought it in Paris at Shakespeare and Company, the successor bookstore named in homage to Sylvia Beach's original.)

The choices were VERY limited, so I downloaded the two books that looked "promising". They were both absolutely useless to me with no map available with most info similar/less than what you could find by hopping online. Do yourself a favor and get a real guide ahead of time!

Outdated, and really doesn't cover the Vicinity of Puerta Vallarta at all.

Well, maybe not. Unless there was cable TV, a DVD player, and a local video store. But still, this is the best reference on the market when it comes to cast/crew biography. The listing is exhaustive of directors, actors, writers, producers, and others who made important milestones when it comes to film. Included are film terms. It's true that this is not a film encyclopedia, actually, but there are those on the market already. So if the argument here is about the "title" of this guide, get a life already. Maybe you feel you got took...but, by far, you have not. This is the best desk reference of its kind. Believe me. I've studied film for over 20 years and, above all, I'm a critic and this book is the one guide I would NEVER do without. A good compliment would be, as one reviewer mentioned here, Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide. However, an updated copy of that is released every year late summer-early autumn. So, if it's spring or summer, wait for the next copy. You'll get all the recent films of the last year then. Maltin's guide has details about each film that will be found in no other film guides. Buy it-and buy the Katz guide for sure!Update as of April, 2014: truthfully, this IS more of a "desert isle text", as my title refers, for in the modern age, IMDB and, primarily, Wikipedia are really all you need. However, this may still come in handy, for both sites have their omissions. Outside of that, I truthfully haven't picked up this book for years and years. However, I still stand behind the Maltin guide completely.

Since its original publication, I have used this book both as a movie lover and as a writer. As a movie lover, it's a never-failing source of obscure information. Can't remember the name of the movie, and only remember its star? You'll find the answer here. Want to know what a grip does? Looking to discover how many films were made by Howard Hawks or Howard Hughes? What's a dolly? What's a key light? The answers to some of the most obscure questions about moviemaking reside in this brilliant compilation of facts about films and the people who make them--everyone from the best boy to the stars. As a research resource, it's invaluable. To satisfy that nagging question about some film you saw with James Cagney, get the Film Encyclopedia. Next to the Cinebooks Library, this is the single most important book to own. Nothing before it and nothing after it will ever contain a similar wealth of information. This is a must-have volume.

I've had every edition of this book, from the 1970s to the present. There's a good reason that no film buff should go without it. That every major film critic and historian in America has a copy of this book on their shelves is good enough endorsement for me.If you're looking for profiles of "flash in the pan" trends and/or movie stars, forget it. But for everything else, this is as good as it gets.Best of all. This book has always been a GREAT VALUE. Always priced below what you'd expect. Buy it. I guarantee you'll only be disappointed if you're looking for a book with a picture on every page. There are other books for that. This one is a keeper...

I updated from an earlier edition on this book. I consider this to be an esssential for the movie lover. Not a book with movie reviews, but a (large) volumn of info of all types. Bio's of the stars & performers list all of their films. Many articles on techniques, etc make this a 1 volumn source of info on just about anything movie wise.

This 6th is much better edition than the original 3rd edition. Data updated to keep pace with DOB and ensuing Date of Death. Plus, new copy as opposed to 2nd hand copy that it replaced.I was mistakenly sent the 3rd Edition which I promptly returned after opening. Then I was sent an expedited 6th edition within 3 days. The original 3rd edition took 3 weeks on the cheapest slow boat from China. The second came by jet obvium to requite me for my expenditure which you duly noted. Thank you again Amazon.alba hall

A worthwhile compendium of film lore. The reviews are fair, and take in critical and public opinon from each film's time. Includes Oscar nominations and all major credits and cast. I could quibble with some of the inclusions and exclusions (what exactly was the criteria?), but what's here is good. Includes foreign films.

Books are very much a matter of taste. YA books are a sub-set of that, and I happen to love them, generally.But this was a special book for me, both as a gay man who came out in the 1970s and as the father (with another man) of two teenagers. (Straight ones, just for the record.) Having read Konigsberg's "Out of the Pocket," which I liked a lot (did not love, to be clear), I took his recommendation to look into the next book. Very glad I did.From the very beginning, the book's core premise was destined to make me squirm - Rafe Goldberg, a loved, self-assured, well-adjusted gay seventeen-year-old decides to move away from his bubble of liberalism and go to a New England all-boys prep school so he can shed his label - "the gay boy." He yearns to be "just one of the guys." And he succeeds. He's just butch enough to pass in a setting where no one knows him, without his hippy parents proclaiming gay pride every time he walks into a room. He is thrilled to be "normal."Oh, Lord, was I uncomfortable from the get-go. Because I went to prep school in New England, and I never, ever managed to be "one of the guys." I tried to start over again at my Ivy League college (still in the 1970s) and that failed in the first twenty-four hours. So I hated what Rafe did. I hated what he wanted to do, because he could do it and I couldn't when I was his age.But I trusted the author. I thought I knew where Rafe's journey would take him, and I was almost right. I was right in that I knew that Rafe was a great guy - a good kid - in spite of the dickish thing he was doing. I know that teenagers make poor choices for what seem like good reasons. I know that the boys Rafe interacts with at prep school are archetypes - and, having teenagers, I know that there is a great deal of truth in these archetypes, so yelling "stereotype" is beside the point. All teenagers are trying out roles, trying to see who they want to be; figuring out who they are.Rafe, and Ben and Toby and Albie and Claire Olivia - even the jocks - felt pretty spot-on to me. I've had the dubious pleasure of reliving high school these past four years through my kids(arrgh) and my own memories support Konigsberg's setting pretty closely. Rafe and Ben are the only two characters who get to develop deeply. But the secondary characters are vivid and compelling - and you watch as Rafe labels them - all the while trying to avoid his own label! - and then begins to appreciate them (or not) according to who they really are.And my favorite YA books are the ones in which parents matter. Rafe's parents matter, and are living proof that supportive loving parents are just as annoying as distant disapproving ones. Except that they love you, and that, in the end, is what makes all the difference for Rafe. Rafe makes a journey of self discovery (NOT of self-acceptance). And he takes us with him, in one of the gentlest, most intimate YA books I've ever read.

I read this one after "Honesty Ben"--not the best sequence. In both of the books I was much impressed with the writing, especially the excellent dialogue and the expression of feelings. (In fact, it closely approached that of my all time favorite, Anthony MacDonald, which is saying a lot.) The "situation" is a bit unusual within this genre, bringing out issues and emotions dealing with "labeling" in general and especially regarding sexuality of course. Yet, at the end of the first book, I felt some disappointment--something didn't seen fulfilled, and that's why I turned to this book detailing the "main players'" prior interactions. It didn't help much. The great writing of dialogue and feelings of love, honesty, faithfulness, etc. were there, and finally I realized that (for me) the missing element--the lack of luster--was indeed the lack of lust. It appears (to me) that the author chooses not to express the lust part of a young loving relationship--I noticed that I had looked in vain for the beauty that this fine author could bring to a, say, four-or-five page situational build up and consummation of erotic love. As it was, it was left as though the guys, perhaps especially Ben, had but little libido-- lacked testosterone perhaps or hadn't gotten past their inhibitions. So for me, a really good read but missing the luster this writer could have given it. Maybe, in it's place, are the good but seemingly "too much" or "out of place" SERMONS (it felt) about labeling, total "honesty," etc. Admitted, of course, is that for M2M stories to be really complete (for me, again) is at least one good/great scene that gets me hard and leaking--that didn't happen.

When I read the synopsis of this I thought "oh this will be good". And yes the story is good and the message the main learns is great. BUT the main character is just awful! He ruins what could be a coming of age story. Without giving spoilers, it's an openly gay teenager who moves across the country to go to a new school to get away from the whole being labeled as the token gay guy. Which I get is totally understandable, our society is all about labeling people. So he goes to another school and doesn't tell anybody he is gay, he even goes to lengths to lie about being gay. Now his family doesn't understand why he is doing this and think it's a bad idea......Which it is. But he keeps playing the whole I want to get away from labels. Which again is all fine and great, BUT HE IS ALL ABOUT LABELING EVERYONE ELSE!!!!!! He first started hanging out with the jocks and talks about how he doesn't really like them and wouldn't be friends with them, but since he is doing his whole "no labels" thing he sticks around them. *face palm*. Like I said this would be a great story but the main character is just so infuriating he makes the story less then enjoyable to read. I was over it after the 2nd chapter but I needed to finish this. There is a second book from another characters view but I don't think I could read it when this one left a bad taste in my mouth.
