From there this book takes on the tough question: Can, and should, Rae forgive her husband’s infidelity? Author Amanda Prowse is at her best when she explores the gray areas of this question. On one side is Rae’s 25-year history with her husband; on the other side is the feeling of betrayal she isn’t sure she can ever forget.At times Prowse goes too far over into black and white. For me, that’s where the story is at its weakest. When Rae talks to her longtime best friend Dolly about Howard’s unfaithfulness, Dolly’s initial reaction is so one-sided it’s simplistic. Dolly’s judgment is tainted because Howard is her brother – but still!Sometimes the inner wrestling and outer dialog gets repetitive. That’s the way we process things in real life, but in a novel, it helps to keep those thoughts and feelings more streamlined.I think many readers will have strong feelings about whether it’s possible for Rae to continue her marriage. Your take on this may determine how you feel about the ending. With no spoilers, I’ll just say that the resolution didn’t work for me. It felt like an easy way out after raising so many complex questions.With all of that said, I truly enjoyed “The Girl in the Corner.†Prowse’s characters and their relationships are well-drawn for the most part and kept me invested in their story. I will definitely be reading more from her to see how I feel about the next one!
I generally liked this book, but I couldn't really identify with Rae being such a put upon person in the first place. Not referring to the infidelity of her husband, which is a totally different subject and I'm not judging how she handled that. But many of the things she looked at as being pushed around or always the one to do things for other people, seem to me like things you do as a mother and a part of a family. The party at their house where she was pulled in all different directions and very resentful for it made no sense to me. That's a normal thing you do when you have company.All that aside, I did enjoy the book and thought the ending was a good outcome for the character. I just felt that the husband's affair and her feelings of unhappiness with her life were two totally different things and had nothing to do with eachother.
Throughout this book, I just wanted to jump through the pages and smack the heroine for being too nice, but the character development was excellent. I was glad I stuck with it because the plot had a few good twists and turns, and by the time I got to the end, I was cheering for her.
A good book to read where the wife/mother/friend comes into her own. The last chapter was a surprise as the one before had me expecting a different ending,
The story line was a good one and the descriptions appropriate but belaboured. This, unfortunately, dragged the story out too long and at times I was tempted to skip through points that were being made over and over.I may, in the future, try something else from this author.
A very good book, well written! Free og boring sex, and fill of real life and a fine and positive ending! Iwould like a second book about The Girl in the corner!
To see how one woman overcomes the sudden lose and homelessness she faces is amazing. This book shows the true strength we have buried inside us and how life's twist and turns can bring it forward.
I loved this book and the characters. Dolly kept me laughing especially with her quip of “Iwanttohavesexwithyourbrother.†It sounds like something my friends and I would do.
