How Grids Help You Build Better-Looking Pages Documents by Josh Clark It’s not always obvious, but just about every professional layout is built on top of a very specific formal structure, a sturdy framework lurking under the surface of even the most complex and dizzying designs. For centuries, artists, printers, and designers have organized their compositions with grids composed of horizontal and vertical lines that invisibly slice the canvas into blocks, or grid units, that help the designer to align and size page elements, as you can see here: A grid keeps things clean, giving you guidelines to provide consistent placement and spacing throughout your document and to ensure well proportioned elements within individual pages. Grids can help to organize any design, but they’re particularly helpful in providing internal consistency to lengthy documents like books, magazines, or newsletters. For standard portrait pages like these, it’s common to use five- or six-column grids, but that doesn’t mean that you have to crowd your content into five or six narrow columns. Both text columns could be three grid units wide, or one could be four and the other two. Or you could reserve one column entirely for white space. Using alignment guides You build a grid in Pages using alignment guides, vertical and horizontal guidelines which you conjure from Pages’ rulers and place anywhere on the page, like a virtual T-square. These lines aren’t part of the document itself—they’re visible only when you’re editing, and they don’t show up when you print. They’re unique to every page of the document—every page has its own set of alignment guides that you can tweak and nudge without affecting guides on other pages. You pluck vertical guides from the vertical ruler, and horizontal guides from the horizontal ruler. To add an alignment guide, choose View-->Show Rulers. Click anywhere inside the ruler and drag the cursor into your document—your pointer now has a blue guideline in its craw, as shown here: Add alignment guides to your page by clicking in the ruler and dragging into the document. Pull horizontal guidelines (left) out of the top ruler and vertical guidelines (right) from the left ruler. As you drag, Pages shows you the distance of your guideline from the edge of the page. Drop the line wherever you want it in your document. To move an alignment guide, just drag it to its new location. To remove it entirely, drag it out of the document, and the guide goes up in a puff of smoke. When you add or move objects, the objects snap to these alignment guides, jumping over to line up automatically with these magnetic guides whenever you drag objects within a few pixels. Since 2004, Apple no longer supports AppleWorks -- a serious misstep: it was in its days a most efficient, powerful and elegant piece of software, and well documented, at that.So, being a writer and with AppleWorks now wilting, I had to either use MS Word (not a tempting option) or order the AppleWork's successor, the iWork. So I did, but what did I receive in the mail? -- just a lonely CD rattling in the cardboard box. Not one single printed page of "Getting started" or even " Basic Introduction". What an insult to a paying customer. (True, there was an "online userguide" but you can't really read such a manual and use the app at the same time.) When trying out the CD, the iWork (and I was mainly interested in the word processor, "Pages") turned out to be a highly complex program, largely meaningless to this aging user. I just wasn't able to use it it "as is" out of the box; I finally had to give up. To save my sanity I decided to order Josh Clark's "iWork 09" (O'Reilly, Pogue Press) via Amazon. That turned out to be just the right thing to do. This 800+ page book covers absolutely every aspect of iWorks, using a clear, useful -- and sometimes funny -- prose, explaining absolutely everything that needs to be clarified.To me, the book transformed an incomprehensible jumble of cryptic wordprocessing/page-layout options, into a powerful, versatile, quite elegant application that I now use for my daily writing efforts.I do recommend this book to users of Macintosh iWork (and I still consider Apple's neglect of documentation as inexcusabily shameful - I do recall the thorough, neatly printed Apple user-guides of yore).FB in San Diego

After using PCs for 20 years I recently got a Mac Mini. I didn't want to spend a lot to do word processing and stuff on the Mac, as I still have Office on my PC so when I saw iWork on the App Store I checked out the reviews and got it anyway (most of the bad reviews seem to come from people who are used to Office). After using it for a while I realized it was a very powerful set of programs but I knew I would need some help to get the most out of them. Having read the OS X Missing Manual and loving it, I got the one for iWork 9. I am still in the process of reading this manual. (It's about 900 pages.) I am almost finished with the Pages section. If the other sections for Numbers and Keynote are even half as good I will consider this a great investment! The writing is concise but not dry like most other manuals are. It shows you every option, feature and secret that hide within the programs menus and drop downs. It takes you from using the built in templates to creating your own. I totally recommend the Missing Manual series for learning. They are so comprehensive you learn to do just about everything the programs can possibly do and even things you didn't think they could!

I love the "missing manual" concept, since I find a manual (a book, to be precise) to be a fast way of getting information about a specific topic (like a piece of software).And iWork 09: The Missing Manual doesn't disappoint. In it, you will find the techniques and how-tos that you would expect from a software manual. Where do you find styles? How do you create a template? How do you convert a file to QuickTime? All here.But he goes further here, actually teaching you how to think about a document (with a short tutorial on layout), or a presentation (with some helpful hints on how to actually give a presentation), or spreadsheet. For example, he includes some things to consider when you are making sure the room is ready for you (know how to unlock the door. Know where the light switches are. Make sure people can find the room, etc). Now, if you consider yourself adept at any or all these things, this may actually be a bit insulting. But his advice is good, and you can just skip it if you think he has nothing to teach you.So this goes far beyond telling you how to change a font, or increase the number of rows in your table. And for people new to word processing/page layout, or presentations, or spreadsheets, that makes this book invaluable.

It cost as much as the program did, and tripled the program's value to me in the first week. I have lost count of how many word processing etc. programs I have used, and claim to know my way around the feature block, but this book cut months off the learning curve of Pages. So much info that I need more index. Sometimes it is like looking for the car keys! (Who'd have thought of looking there?) I'm retired, so I can spend time just reading the book and "poking around" the keyboard, but there is no one next door who can show me a "neat feature". The structure of"Pages" is (to my mind) so different from others I have used. The first newsletter I did went thru 3 total restarts as I tried various features. "MM" finally told me where paragraphs were hiding, and why they reemerged where they did.This one of several "MM" books I have bought. Haven't been sorry for one yet! I recommend the program, and if you get it get the "MM"!Unklecarl

I had read reviews about this book that were less than favorable and I seriously do not understand why. Yes it's a little long winded but when the wind is passed you have no doubt how to do hat was being explained. This book covers all aspects of I work in depth and does an exceptional job putting it in terms that anyone can understand. The perfect balance between not over the head of those who are very new to office, yet not talking down to those who are experienced in using a office program. To be honest before I read this I though I wasted my money on Iwork and though that Open Office was better. Not all that far into the book I realized that I just didn't know how to use Iwork.
