I appreciate how the author seems to have spent years to make easy to follow steps of making your own hydroponics. The whole process is well-described in the first section of the book. The benefits of it all convinced me that it can have many amazing benefits not only for the plants but for myself as well.I enjoyed how clear and detailed explanations are. The photos and diagrams are super helpful. The only thing is that I'm new to this type of growing system so some of the materials and the building of hydroponics would be a challenge for me. You can choose from starting at the very simple through to the more complicated.I think I'll start with suggested pre-made nutrient solutions for beginners and eventually possible use the more advanced hydroponic systems as I get good at it. So I'll probably referring to this book a lot. I like that there's also suggested solutions along with the ingredients and procedure in making it as well as the ways to prevent and get rid of the upcoming problems such as pests, fungi and algae.I enjoyed reading this book. This book is for people who want to learn more of hydroponics and want to pursue it.

It gave me great insight into how hydroponic systems work, how to maximize my efforts, what things to focus on, and what to watch out for.Of course, while this guide is not the end of all guides, it definately is a must read, along with additional research. I will keep this guide in my grow room as a reference that will be pulled out regularly. Highly recommended.

Excellent book, but of course, some of the information is a bit dated.

Even though the book is now several years old, time moves slowly on these islands so most of what appears here is still relevant.

This is the last edition of Lonely Planet's Solomon Islands guide.It has not been updated since the mid-90es, and has in theory been replaced by the publisher's 2005 "Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands" guide, which in reality only devotes fewer than 30 pages to the Solomon Islands, completely ignoring half the country's provinces, concentraiting on Honiara and a few popular tourist spots instead.This edition (or the nearly identical 2nd edition), in contrast, covers the entire archipelago in amazing detail, all the way from the Treasury Islands in the West to the remote Polynesian outliers of Tikopia and Anuta in the East.Each major province and island is described in good detail, and is shown on a good map.Needless to say, some things have changed - however in the Solomons they have probably changed much less than in most of the rest of the World!I travelled in the country in 2005, and found myself using this book almost all the time, with the then brand new PNG & Solomons guide quickly buried to the depths of my backpack.If you want to actually travel around this least visited corner of Melanesia, rather than just have a short holiday on a resort island in Western province, and especially if exploring remote islands and hiking remote mountains and shorelines is your thing, this book is definitely the one to take.It is also highly recommended for those with a general interest in the country, as travel practicalities apart, the background info on the culture, geography and fauna of the Solomons is still better than I have found in any other single book.

The two popular translations of â€˜Crime and Punishmentâ€™ before the 1993 translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, were by Constance Garnett and David McDuff. The Pevear/Volokhonsky translation became my favourite â€“ until Oliver Readyâ€™s translation came along. Not knowing a word of Russian, I declare my favourite only by the enjoyment I derived from reading the book in English.Many things may indeed be lost in translation, and many others get misrepresented but we may not know. The result of reading only the English versions is that oneâ€™s choice is largely subjective. Compared to the Garnett version, the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation seems very modern â€“ until Readyâ€™s came along. Little things like changing â€˜had notâ€™ to â€˜hadnâ€™tâ€™ renders Readyâ€™s version not only a little more modern but also more informal. That is not to say that the atmosphere of old Russia is lost. Ready uses â€˜fibsâ€™ for â€˜liesâ€™ (Pevear/Volokhonsky) in one passage.Ultimately, the reader has to decide for himself which style he enjoys more. Here is a comparison from one of my favourite passages (there are many) from the book. I set out first the Pevear/Volokhonsky version then the Ready version:â€œWhat do you think?â€ Razmumikhin shouted, raising his voice even more. â€œYou think itâ€™s because theyâ€™re lying? Nonsense! I like it when people lie! Lying is manâ€™s only privilege over all other organisms. If you lie- you get to the truth! Lying is what makes me a man. Not one truth has ever been reached without lying fourteen times or so, maybe a hundred and fourteen, and thatâ€™s honourable in its way; well, but we canâ€™t even lie with our minds! Lie to me, but in your own way, and Iâ€™ll kiss you for it. Lying in oneâ€™s own way is almost better than telling the truth in someone elseâ€™s way; in the first case youâ€™re a man, and in the second â€“ no better than a bird. The truth wonâ€™t go away, but life can be nailed shut; there are examples. (Pevear/Volokhonsky)â€˜Now what are you thinking?â€™ cried Razumikhin, raising even more. â€˜That itâ€™s their lies I canâ€™t stand? Nonsense! I like it when people lie. Telling lies is humanityâ€™s sole privilege over other organism. Keep fibbing and youâ€™ll end up with the truth! Iâ€™m only human because I lie. No truthâ€™s ever been discovered without fourteen fibs along the way, if not one hundred and fourteen, and thereâ€™s honour in that. But our lies arenâ€™t even our own! Lie to me by all means, but make sure itâ€™s your own, and then Iâ€™ll kiss you. After all, lies of your own are almost better than someone elseâ€™s truth: in the first case youâ€™re human; in the second youâ€™re just a bird! The truth wonâ€™t run away, but life just might â€“ wouldnâ€™t be the first time.Readyâ€™s version has a table of chronological events and a fresh, inspiring introduction that will help the first-time reader understand and appreciate the context of â€˜Crime and Punishmentâ€™

I do not know what my review can add to the Brothers Karamazov, but I will put in a few of my words. I have now read this book six times through and every time I am simply amazed at the complexity of vision that Dostoevsky brought to the page. My copy of the book is littered with page numbers written in the margins that connect the dots between all of the recurring scenes, ideas, images, phrases, and philosophies. It has taken years of sustained thought to be able to draw all of these connections, which makes it somewhat unbelievable that Dostoevsky was able to write it in the time frame that he did. Because of this, though, I have found this translation to be the only reasonable choice for the serious student. Many earlier translations ironed out potentially awkward phrasings, and thereby destroyed the parallelism that was being masterfully established.I have shed so many tears on the pages of my copy of this book that I am surprised it is still holding up as well as it is. There is a sensitivity and beauty to this text that I have never been able to find anywhere else, even in other works by Dostoevsky. It is, quite simply, the most masterful examination of agape (active love), faith, and justice, and redemption that I have ever encountered in my life, in philosophy, history, literature, film, or otherwise. There are no words to offer that can capture how profoundly this book has changed me for the better.

Most people know that The Brothers Karamazov is an amazing novel, so I will only be criticizing the translation; however, I haven't read any other translations to verify my knowledge on the subject, and I would suggest going getting samples of different translations in order to best suit your needs.The Richard Peaver & Larissa Volokhonsky translation of The Brothers Karamazov is good. It's being marketed as the best, but it really isn't. There is not a 'best' translation of Dostoyevsky, or really, any other Russian author I've researched; no, there isn't a 'best' translation of a book that I know of. To my understanding the Peaver translations usually stick incredibly close to the original source material, which is a double edged sword; most people want a translation that doesn't loose something or other in translation. This one is very close to doing so, but as I said it's a double edged sword; they leave in the syntax, and a very foreign syntax at that. This can cause problems for a casual reader, but it wasn't a problem for me. What really matters is the readers personal preference. I will add the first sentence of the P&V, McDuff, and Garnett translations to see which one you'd most like:"Alexei Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of a land owner from our district, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, well known is his own day (and still remembered among us) because of his dark and tragic death, which happened exactly thirteen years ago and which I shall speak of in its proper place." - P&V"Aleksey Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of a landowner in our district, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, so noted in his time (and even now still recollected among us) for his tragic and fishy death, which occurred just thirteen years ago and which I shall report in its proper context." - McDuff"Alexey Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, a landowner well known in our district in his own day, and still remembered among us owing to his gloomy and tragic death, which happened thirteen years ago, and which I shall describe in its proper place." - GarnettMoving on to the edition I have. It's ISBN is 978-0374528379, but it is the best selling edition as of 8/1/2017; you probably won't have any trouble finding it. This paperback is a great durable edition. I kept it in my backpack for school each day for basically the entire second semester without too much serious wear (check the photos to judge yourself). The font is big enough to read well without straining your eyes... or at least it was for me. It's still holding together nicely is what I'm trying to say. The binding is glued, too; if you didn't know. This edition has a cover in which I will describe as rough-soft feeling; I enjoyed holding it in my hands.Finally, sorry for the poor camera quality. The soda can piece is there to show how big the text is in comparison. The torn piece on the back is from a mishap I am accountable for not the book, although it says something about the books durability; it happened near the end of my usage with it.

Allen has worked for the National Outdoor Leadership School since 1987 and spent four seasons working for the United States Antarctic Program. Mike Clelland is a NOLS instructor and illustrator who studied Mad magazine rather than go to art school. Densely packed with useful information, but accessible and easy to understand. I flip through it before all my winter backcountry trips to refresh my memory and avoid costly planning and packing errors that can be life threatening when miles from civilization in sub zero weather.

I read this because I wanted to learn how to survive and thrive should I ever find myself overnight in the snow. As always, the authors deliver sound advice gleened from their experience, and make you laugh all the way through with the funny illustrations. I appreciate the absence of machismo and political soap-boxing sometimes found in wilderness books, while reminding the reader to respect nature and be responisble.What's neat about this book is the detailed instructions on how to do things. I don't ski the backcountry, but I spend a lot of time in the mountains and this books has great advice for anybody.My husband bought me these books to get me interested in backpacking, and it worked. 'Nuff said.

I wish I had this book before my first winter camping experience in Alaska. It would have made for a much more enjoyable & successful trip. In this book you will find tips on clothing & gear selection, packing appropriately, winter camping safety & planning (including building multiple styles of snow shelters), intermediate skiing techniques, backcountry ethics, and basic avalanche safety. All of these are accompanied by entertaining and informational pictures which for me are very helpful at giving the complete picture. Don't expect this book to teach you to become an expert skier, but it will help you get enough of a solid base to get started without getting yourself into a dangerous situation. I would even recommend this for the relatively seasoned winter camper, as there are several tips which you may not have picked up even if you do get out in the cold frequently. I just finished reading this book a second time and picked up a few more tips that I hope to use this winter.I would also highly recommend An Illustrated Guide to Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue if you plan to do any glacier travel.

I bought this book because I wanted to get into BC skiing and have a lot of questions about the diffs of tele vs AT, use of skins etc...The book really doesnt offer much info on skiing. It does however have a lot of info on camping in winter conditions in an easy to read format with lots of pictures.So if you need info regarding camping in the snow this would probably be a good book for you, if your like me and looking for more info on types of systems when you would want one over the other etc.. you should probably pass on this book.

This is a must read for anyone looking to hone their 4th season backpacking skills; as an experienced winter backcountry traveler I grabbed this title to tickle my imagination - outdoor books help get me fired up - and I was pleasantly surprised by the number of useful strategies contained within that I immediately incorporated into my own routine. Clelland's illustrations are awesome as always (his "Ultralight Backpackin' Tips" and "Lighten Up" are 5 Star Reads as well), and don't be confused by the "backcountry ski" title: this is a fantastic resource for anyone who enjoys a challenging winter overnight by boot, snowshoe, snowboard or ski.

Full of good illustrations and a bible for backcountry safety

Excellent book. I love this whole book series. Great for all ages. I especially like that the illustrations add their own information to the book and don't just illuminate the text.

This is a awesome book It has a bunch of great information. I learned so much on what to wear and what to do in winter camping.

This is a great supplement to the textbook. Too bad the textbook was not written as clearly as this supplement!

The subsections of this text book do not correspond with the associated cases. There are subsection titles after the cases, but it is unclear if the subsections relate to the prior cases or if the text is moving on to new subjects. I've been reading law books for three years, and this book is the most confusing, disorganized text I have had the privilege of reading. I don't have a problem with the content, just the placement (or attempted placement) of the content into the various subsections.

This is the 2nd worst law school textbook I have had to buy (Federal Courts will likely never be unseated from the top spot). Very poorly organized, and the notes after the cases do more to confuse the issue than clarify anything. I understand this is Conflicts, a known tough class where "right" answers do not necessarily exist, but this insult to injury is unnecessary. The book provides no context before presenting a case. The E&E for this topic is very good - and much more organized and actually covers numerous topics in more depth than the text. The Kermit Roosevelt (who is one of the authors for the text) supplement (Conflict of Laws - Foundation Press) is good, and definitely clarifies things - and he definitely hits on the high points of the text (though some of the book is his talking about how he would rewrite Conflicts Laws - which is actually really interesting - but will not be on your exam). Though the way the textbook presents the Modern Approaches (in a more disorganized, linear/timeline fashion) is probably more accurate to the way the law developed - it doesn't help the learning process. For me the E&E provided structure and got me enough background that I could put the rest of the puzzle pieces together.

Our professor used this as our course-book. It's a pretty good book though sometimes the notes after the cases can be confusing.

The book Conflicts of Law is excellent. The product was in excellent condition and already has served as an asset in my educational training this year. I would recommend this site for the purchase of further academic textbooks to any student/potential buyer.

I read this book twice from the library then bought it. The author's approach using the green/yellow/red lights idea is easy to use and explain, then to apply it to when one has or does not have an open heart or open mind in situations works for me. She does begin with talking about mindfulness and personal awareness of when one is open and closed, a reminder that it all begins with oneself and how aware we are.

While there is some valuable insight hidden within this book, I didn't feel like the book did a good job at conveying the most essential points. The writing was not very concise or well-organized, so that by the end of the book I still didn't feel like I fully understood the analogy of red-yellow-green light communication that the author had used over and over again throughout the book. I finished the book feeling like I got something out of it, but not really sure about what that something was or how to apply it to my relationships.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to deepen and strengthen relationships with people. It has helped my personal, professional, and academic areas of life.

This is the most practical guide I have ever used in evaluating my communication and verbal interaction behaviors. I used it in conjunction with the author's online Shambala course, and use the skills every day.

This isn't a book that can be read quickly because the wisdom that is there takes awhile to process. I bought this is a gift for my brother for an occasion and gave it to him early and to say the least he loves it. It is already hanging up on his wall. It has become somewhat of an annual tradition to get one of these SI swimsuits for my grandfather, and this year was no exception. As you would expect, all of the photos are very attractive. We have always been satisfied with the quality of the print material used for the calendars, easily lasting all year - most of what is written on the calendar is appointment reminders for my grandfather, so it doesn't get a lot of use in that regard. But it serves the intended purpose of giving my grandfather something new to appreciate at the beginning of every month.

I get my son a calander for Christmas every year, and since he's now 17 I figured this would be perfect. And it was, the embarrassment in his face when he opened it was priceless!!! ðŸ˜Š

Weyland has been hooked on skateboarding for more than 20 years (he is 33 years old), making objectivity all but impossible. Instead, Weyland has written what amounts to a love letter to skateboarding and its culture. He cobbles old articles and reportage from skating magazines like Skateboarder and Thrasher into a breezy narrative of the sport from its birth in 1960s California as a way for surfers to pass the time when the waves were flat to the hugely popular sport of today, regularly featured on ESPN. Along the way readers meet legends like the Dogtown Z-Boys (skating pioneers who were recently the subject of a documentary film), Steve Caballero and Tony Hawk. But the real strength of this book comes from the personal experiences he skillfully drops in the mix. He does a great job explaining how, growing up as an alienated kid, skating offered him an alternative to institutionalized jock mentality and its attendant boorishness. Through his vivid remembrances, he offers a glimpse into the rebellious skating culture in the 1980s when it was still far underground. And while Weyland lapses a bit into sentimentality over today' s commercialization of the sport, he always returns to its true spirit. As he writes, It' s slamming onto cement and getting purple hip contusions that stick to your pants for weeks, riding on rain-soaked sidewalks and arguing with old ladies and running from cops. Echoes many of my sentiments from the early days.As for the days surrounding my involvement, it is how I remember it, and how I intended it.That never happens, but it did in this book, and I don't even know this guy, and never talked to him. He did use some of my photos without asking me though, and I never got a dime. I can be reached through Thrashers publisher, in the event there is a check waiting for me, and no where to mail it.

Growing up in the 80s I was surrounded by skateboarding, whether it be in the form of my Mom's friend's daughter showing me how to (attempt to) ride down the street at age 10, the kids skating in the "hip town" of Hyannis, MA (which was a "city" to someone from The Cape), watching my neighbors skate and build their own ramps, watching the early skate videos, or ogling through Transworld Skate or Thrasher and wishing I'd had enough coordination to actually be able to learn what I was seeing. I found this book at the public library and thought it might be an interesting read, but I had no idea what I was in for. Granted, Weyland's writing can be very subjective and he tends to "go off" about what skating has become (as many people who have been skating their entire life can), but what he wrote isn't just his complaints about skating and the industry. There's a lot of information about the history of skating (which a lot of people who claim to skate might not have any ideas about), and also stories about what skating was like before The Circus of what is now began. What he's written gives the person who doesn't understand skating the ability to have some inkling of what it's like, and to understand that "skating" isn't just what they see, but it's a culture, a lifestyle, a thought pattern, a philosophical journey, and can even be a family. One truly interesting part of the book (for me, being a 28 year-old college professor) is Weyland's comments and thoughts about going from being "in the know" to being considered "old." I would definitely suggest this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about the history of the sport and the genesis of what they see before them today.

This book is absolutely loaded with memories, from us old surfers who skated pools, to the kids who skate all the parks around the country and haven't bothered to experience the joy of getting chased out of public skate venues--all of us need to read this work of art. All of a sudden, all these great books have come out about our little world: Hawk's book (HAWK, OCCUPATION SKATEBOARDER) takes us inside the life of a pro (okay, well, inside the life of a god); AGENTS OF CHANGE takes us inside the world of DC Shoes and they're all worthy of putting on our coffee tables or on our bookshelves and maintaining a little bit of history. I give this book a deep asian bow... I'll love it long time.

I found Jocko Weyland's book to be an incredible history of skating because he unearthed some of the more obscure heroes of skating (those that were not given credit in Dogtown) who hailed from disparate parts of the globe including Hawaii. I also love that the author skated with the elks in Colorado.If you are into skating or know someone who is, buy this frickin' book. It tells the whole tale!

As a lifelong skateboarder, I was stoked (yes, I said 'stoked') to see a book like this come out. And I retained my stoke during the book's introduction. The introduction could stand alone as an inspired and revelatory essay.But after slogging through the first few chapters, I couldn't go on. I found the writing style to be simultaneously dry and overwritten. A bit of a feat really. It often feels as though the author's writing style was to get through a checklist of datapoints.The Answer Is Never states data without inspiration or revelation. So while it achieves textbook status, it omits the quizes at the end of each chapter.The editing is flat, and the copyediting is dismal. Mislaid lines of text and typos abound.

Bought this for my nephew as a Christmas gift. My brother told me he really got into skating this past summer. Based on reviews it sounded like it would be perfect for him. He was so excited to receive it. It turns out he met one of the authors and apparently skates where he does and couldn't wait to show him the gift.

I purchased this as a gift for my nephew who is a dyed in the wool skating buff (takes after his dad at the same age), and who informed me that the current term is "skating"; they no longer call it "skateboarding";...learn something new every day :;). My nephew loves the book. It is small enough to take along with him, is packed with history of the sport, and is written by a true legend of the sport. I nailed it as far as my nephew is concerned!

If you love skateboarding you should buy this book. It's a nice history that is intelligently written. It talks about skateboard culture with the alienated, angry kids, and how it is so different from organized sports. It covers the early beach culture skaters, punk rock skaters, Dogtowners and the beginning of vert riding. This book is fun to read.
