I love Ellen DeGeneres's work so reading her books was a no brainer. I read her book, The Funny Thing Is... when it released about ten years ago. I can't say that I remember a ton about the book but I do remember that I enjoyed it. Enough to want to read any future books of hers which leads to Seriously... I'm Kidding.If you're going into Seriously... I'm Kidding expecting a memoir, well, it's not your typical memoir. I'd say this is a series of essays and I use the term essays loosely (I do love this structure here) that can be described as half memoir half inspiration/motivational with humor on every page. Yes, Ellen talks about her time working on American Idol and whether or not Ellen and Portia will have kids, as well as why. Stuff like that. For me though, there's really nothing in this book I didn't already know. This wasn't disappointing to discover as I was more curious about Ellen's delivery of the humor which I'll get to in a moment. But ultimately, this book was more inspiring and funny than a behind the scenes look at Ellen's life and/or any issues she's overcome over the past few years.Aside from the memoir side of things, there's a ton of advice on self esteem, self worth, and positivity. I was expecting Ellen to touch on these topics and I was expecting positivity to be the theme of the book no matter what since that's what Ellen is all about. I didn't realize that the extent of her inspirational words would be so large. These are all good things but I did think, "Am I reading the introduction to a self help book?" at times in the beginning of the book.Now worth noting is how funny this book is. There's humor in every chapter but some chapters are about absolutely nothing significant and exist solely for a punchline. Even so, everything Ellen says leads to a joke. Everything. There is not a moment of rest with the comedy here. It's very fast paced and goofy. You don't get a break from the funny. There's barely time to recover from the previous joke before another one comes. It's a lot of funny. Which you either love, can appreciate, or don't find this approach to comedy works for you. I appreciate it. Which made this a very quick read.The best part? It's all Ellen. There's a writing team behind her talk show and of course she's the head of that team but her book is a totally different animal and a more solitary creative experience so it's refreshing to hear Ellen's voice and only Ellen's voice in this medium. So, would I recommend this book? If you're looking to learn more about Ellen, nothing serious of course, just watch her talk show to get it straight from her in real time. If you've got two or three hours to kill and are looking for more laughs from Ellen, go right ahead.

I got this audio book mostly because it's read by Ellen DeGeneres. I love her, I think she's hilarious, and so I thought that she'd be great to listen to as if she were putting on a show on CD. This is not the case.Unfortunately, as much as I love Ellen, her audio book sounds stilted like, well, she's READING it. The jokes are a little like jokes you plant in a speech that has a monotonous edge to it that totally ruins the entire thing.The entire book wasn't like that, but the lead up to the punch line falls flat when she can't get that "I'm reading you a funny joke but I have to be careful I don't spit in the microphone so I'm going to read with one tone of voice for places I might spit whilst laughing" out of her voice! It's so frustrating!The book itself was a compilation of seemingly random chapters, some very short and some long. There's a long period of silence for a `meditation' period as well as one chapter she says `hey, look in the printed copy because we're gonna skip reading them here' (this is the `text lingo' chapter). Luckily, I had access to the book, but it's kind of a waste of your time to try and track it down. There's also a chapter that is all about sounds which is perfect for the audio book and not so much for the printed version.Plus, it's short. I mean, REALLY short. Like we're talking three hours short. And I honestly didn't like it enough to listen to it again. It is definitely a woman-empowering book and some of the chapters I laughed out loud but most I really wanted to skip.I'd borrow it from the library before you decide to buy the audio book. But a decent read nonetheless.

I'm a big Ellen Degeneres fan, but this book left me wanting. I watch her show every day and reading this book was like re-watching all of her monologues. Don't get me wrong. She is quite possibly the funniest person around. I laugh out loud at her antics. She rules daytime talk TV. (I personally believe Oprah left TV because of Ellen. She couldn't best Ellen's higher ratings.) I will continue watching her show and maybe I will try reading another book. Maybe I'll try one of her audio books narrated by her. I have always preferred watching her. Sometimes what makes her so funny is the 'way' she says it along with the look on her face.

Every one on the planet knows who Ellen is and how funny she is. This book is everything you would expect it to be. Have to say though, at times I wasn't sure of she was taking the piss or not. I sure don't believe most of it any way. I think it was all for laughs, maybe I'm wrong, but at least the laughs were there. If you're looking for her personal life and 'real-life' moments, keep looking. You will be sorely disappointed if you're looking for a glimpse into her life or what makes her tick. This book is nothing but laughs and some insanity. That's entertainment though.I flew through this pretty fast, because it was hilarious. It was exactly what I needed at the time.3.5/5

I'm a HUGE Ellen fan! After hearing her mention books she published in the past and making references to them, I decided to check them out online. Once on Amazon, I used the "Look Inside" function and was able to read a little of the book and it made me laugh... so I decided to purchase this book. I was happy to find out she's just as funny as an author as she is a tv talk show host! I love this book and whenever I need to cheer myself up or have a good laugh, I pick her book up and start reading my favorite sections again! If you love Ellen (or even just good old comedy), you'll love this book! Give it a try!

I go out and buy several copies and press them into friends hands with the fervor of a recent convert and tell them they "NEED" to read it. I think the last nonfiction book to do this for me was 'Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right' or maybe 'The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine.' Usually, the book has both a financial angle and a policy tint. It usually also explores unfairness. That makes sense. In my previous life I was a policy analyst and I now work in the finance industry as a financial planner. Most days, I'm a pretty mellow guy. I meditate, read, drink tea, Netflix and chill. But reading about inequality and unfairness, for me, catalyzes me for action.If the last few political cycles have taught us anything, it is America still struggles with its "original sin" of slavery and the ugly descendants of slavery: discrimination, segregation, inequality, despair. We have seen, just this week (actually for the last few years), protests about the way Black Americans are treated by police officers. That subject deserves its own space, so I wont dwell too much on that here, other than to say the interaction of Black Americans and police officers ISN'T simple. It isn't a subject that can easily be explained just by saying police are racists, or unarmed Black Americans should behave differently (different from whom?). There are structural, geographic, economic, historical, and political forces that all contribute to awful outcomes.Just like blue on black violence isn't easily explained in a tweet or a FB post, the interaction between Black Americans and banks has a long, ugly, and painful history. It is a history that is important to understand if one REALLY wants to explore topics like income inequality, segregation, credit, crony capitalism, corruption, exploitation, state power, wealth, etc... Mehrsa's book explores the policies, laws, programs, politics, economics, and history of black banks AND the history of Black Americans with banks. She points a fairly bleak picture of the fault/chasm that exists between the two financial markets that exist in America. One is the banking structure that exists for a majority of Americans and doesn't need to be explored. But for years that economic structure, that allows people to save (AND BORROW) didn't exist for a large segment of Americans. And when it eventually did, it was skewed heavily. Separate was never equal in banking. Blacks paid a heavy price to save, to borrow (if they could). Even laws that were designed to help pull Americans out of poverty, accumulate wealth and avoid taxes through home ownership, benefited one segment of America while ignoring or fleecing the other.It is a painful read. It is also necessary. Unlike Mehrsa Baradaran's* previous book, 'How the Other Half Banks: Exclusion, Exploitation, and the Threat to Democracy', this one spends little/less time on prescriptions. She is laser focused on what is wrong, what went wrong, and why. It is a dense (without ANY of the negative connotations typically associated with that word) book. One that required me to open THREE different post-it flag packages. I was marking things that were new, quotes that amazed, items I didn't want to forget and I often found myself marking 3 or 4 times a page.A few caveats before I end. This isn't a perfect book. It isn't as exciting as a Michael Lewis book (this probably won't get made into a movie) and the prose isn't as pretty as Robert Caro's LBJ series. But it is important. It is a labor of both love and skill. Reading some chapters in it, I could tell Mehrsa spent months in presidential libraries. Well researched books give me a thrill. Especially when you recognize that a certain nugget of data or quote may never have seen the light of day if it wasn't for the doggedness of a skilled lawyer/historian. 'The Color of Money' deserves to be in the library of anyone who deals with or seriously thinks about income inequality, race, banking, inner cities, etc.As a white, upper-middle, male who has benefited from educated parents, stability, wealth, and every advantage American history and politicians have blessed me with, it is difficult and humbling to realize just how many of the economic realities I take for granted every day weren't available to the parents of my black friends. Hopefully, more of these same financial realities WILL be available to the children of ALL my friends. Hopefully we can begin to cover both the scars of the disadvantaged, and the economic and social chasms that separate (unfairly) us. This book is both a bridge and a battle cry.

This book was shocking and powerful. As someone who does not generally read books about banking, I found it enthralling and heartbreaking. The author writes with an exceptional clarity that makes the material accessible and poignant. Before reading this book, I had never considered the connection between banking and racial injustice in America. Now, it’s hard to imagine any discussion of race that does not involve banking policy. Anyone interested in creating a more just society needs to read this book.

I absolutely cannot say enough good about this book. I deal with these issues for a living, and this is, hands down, one of the best books I have ever read on putting together, dot, by dot, why we are where we are in 2017. How the author made it so compelling, readable, interesting and accessible is beyond me. The only negative thing I have to say is that the title does so little to belie the real significance of this book. It has a title that will turn off some because a book about banking sounds boring, and a book about a racial wealth gap would scare away those who would think it is too "radical." It is so neither!!! In a tremendously interesting way, the author does an incredible job of telling the story, step by step, of where we all find ourselves in 2017 and why. The factual, but not dry, story, is one that EVERYONE can learn from. It is truly, truly, an awesome book. I'm on my second read and I have recommended to everyone from my Uber driver to the head of the Finance department of a major university. Do yourself a favor and read it. You will NOT regret it!

I just want to add a note about the reader experience:This is a smartly written book, yet completely accessible to the general readers without a background in economics. Ms. Baradaran writes a human story, about people and events. This is history, not mathematics. If you want history, and race, and humanity, and politics, this is for you -- the economics comes with the story.

One cannot read Mehrsa Baradaran’s examination of Black Banks and the Racial Wealth Gap without feeling rage or guilt. As an American Citizen, whose American Citizen grandmother was depatriated during the Depression (1.2 Mexican and Mexican American Citizens were deported), and whose family felt the devastating reality of redlining in Los Angeles during the 50’s, this book unearthed a deep pain in me.The devastation of segregation, the internalization of failure and poverty without an understanding of the system that not only created but benefited from the anguish. This book left me exhausted and yet I like others who will read it will be left ultimately empowered.As James Baldwin once said, “The American Soil is full of the corpses of my ancestors. Why is my freedom or my citizenship, or my right to live there, how is it conceivably a question now?” When will America repay its debt.

As NJC answered the simple question, “why are so many black people locked up”, this book answers, “why don’t black people have any money?” TCOM also brilliantly peels back layers of racially charged dogma to reveal the government policies that led to generational plunder. Hopefully TCOM also sparks a national conversation because any attempts at racial reconciliation that don’t address the racial wealth gap are woefully insufficient. #FireRead #PickItUp

I wish they made a pocket version

I bought this book for nursing school knowing aot of people recommended it. The content is good but if you want to take advantage of the free 1 year online access DON't buy the kindle edition it comes with no access code. I bought this because we are required to have our books on our tablets but also wanted access to updated information. I was looking at buying a care plan book as well (the one we are supplied by Elsevier leaves alot to be desired). I will not buy kindle again.

A must-have for a nurse. I prefer the paperback to the phone app. Every week I use it at least once. The only complaint is that is doesn't contain all classes of drugs. Except for one medication that was listed two editions back that isn't present now, I love this book. It is designed for a nurse and quick reference.

As a nursing student, a drug book is essential. I love this book, much more than the Mosby's book that my program suggests we purchase. The information is laid out in an easy to follow fashion. The only problem I have is that (at least on the kindle version) there is a large section (about 200 pages or so) that is out of place. For example, the page labeled as 612 is listed as 554 electronically. This means that some of the drugs are not in alphabetical order which can make locating some of them difficult. Basically my book goes drugs starting with E, G, F, then H (and then the pages are back on track).

It's heavy and the size/shape of a bible - which is exactly what it has been for me. I am a nursing student and I don't dare go to a clinical without this reference! It is simple to use (just look in the index and then go straight to the page), accurate, accessable, and comprehensive. It also has great reference appendices that I have used so many times. The paper is thin but surprisingly durable. This book has taken a beating and I expect to keep buying new editions as long as I'm in the nursing field.

As always, Davis Drug Guide remains the best.Keeping up to date on all the new meds and the appendix that is so important for all nurses, while trying to keep it compact enough to keep near while on the floor. I like that it still includes the drip rates and basic medical math information along with everything else.My first copy was as a student, and I find that after trying many others this is still my favorite.

I love this book, however I do think you could get away with using the Nursing Central website (it uses the Davis's Drug Guide & has everything the book has). I started to do that when I was pressed for time when I was making my drug cards for clinical. I like physical copies of books, which is why I purchased this, but I do think you could use the other website to get all your information. Plus, you may not always have the internet to rely on!

If you're a nursing student and having to write out drug cards for school, this is the book to use! It gives you patient teaching info, nursing considerations, even evaluations. Plus it comes with a code for only usage. Totally worth the price.

I see this book as fulfilling two different purposes. First, if you want to double-check the medicine you're being prescribed. Second, for use in a world without hospitals and medical personnel when you may be forced to self medicate. In both cases its a potential life saver.

I have been doing research on Sudan and South Sudan in academic and organizational settings since my third year of college and have read just about every book that focuses on conflict in Sudan. Douglas Johnson's work is the most comprehensive, although I recommend reading work by R.O. Collins, J.M. Jok, S.E. Hutchinson, P.A. Nyaba, Alex de Waal, and John Young as well for various approaches and perspectives on Sudan's conflict. Johnson frames his assessment of the history of conflict in Sudan as a matter of unequal distribution of power and wealth between the center and peripheries. Over the past several hundred years, the political center has shifted from Darfur/Kordofan during the Mahdi's time, to colonial power focused on agricultural schemes, to riverine Arab groups that dominated politics from Sudan's independence in 1956 until South Sudan's independence in 2011, and continue to dominate Sudan today.Johnson traces the development of uneven power relationships, specifically focusing on issues of land appropriation on Sudan's margins that produced disaffection among groups that the state ostensibly should have been serving. Center-periphery relations are framed both in political and spatial terms, and the overlaps between these are covered fairly well in Johnson's work. The complexities produced by these political and spatial dynamics are very nuanced: for example, during the 1970s, Equatorian politicians sided with President Nimeiry (political center at the time) in favor of federalism for South Sudan; however, this decentralization of power would have actually produced weaker states rather than strength in Southern Sudan, and thus it was opposed by the more powerful politicians in Juba. Furthermore, Nimeiry's offer of federalism elided the issue of Khartoum's appropriation of Unity State and sections of Upper Nile that were found during the 1970s to contain oil reserves.This updated version of "Root Causes" brings the analysis of relations between center and periphery right up to South Sudan's independence, and proves relevant to conceptualizing dynamics in both Sudan and South Sudan as civil wars continue to rage on multiple fronts in both countries. Johnson treats fairly carefully the coalitions and fractions of various political parties, although for more in-depth histories of political groups, other supplemental sources are needed (for anyone interested, I have created a visual timeline: http://mapeastafrica.com/sudan-political-timelines-project/). Johnson's conclusion is that the fundamental relations of power in Sudan have not changed, despite South Sudan's independence. The continuing drive to privatize communal land in the name of development continues to enrich the political elite while destroying livelihoods and producing rebellions on the peripheries.Overall, I found this book informative and worth reading. The timeline in the back of the book also allows the reader to glance at an overview of events as he or she progresses through Sudan's recent history. Along with P.A. Nyaba's "The Politics of Liberation in South Sudan" and Jok Madut Jok's "Sudan: Race, Religion and Violence," I class this as a must-read for those wishing to learn about the recent history of Sudan and South Sudan.

After reading this book, you will laugh at newspaper reports that describe the conflict in Sudan as between "the Muslim north and Christian and animist south". Johnson not only has extensive academic publications in Sudanese ethnography and historiography, but also worked in the aid field in the country. He is also, in a well-sourced, calm and clearly presented manner, outraged at how thoroughly misunderstood the situation in Sudan is. The detail in this book is amazing. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable in an armchair kind of way about southern Sudan, and was consistently being presented with either facts of which I was unaware or, better yet, syntheses tying together various fields in a historical perspective. The offensives, famines, factionalism within southern groups, agricultural schemes, external mediators, forced displacement patterns, and competing aid agencies are all here, and presented so one can see the linkages. This is one of the rare books in which, for example, the connection between the timing of government offensives to seasonal rainfall is convincingly fit within framework of underdevelopment as a political strategy.There are a couple points that made me consider moving this down to four stars. One is that Johnson is clearly partisan to the south. He is not fatally so in my opinion, describing some very unflattering characteristics and actions of Garang's faction, and making his bias clear from the beginning. By the end of the book, he also makes a strong case that "neutrality" has been misused or abused in the context of the Sudanese wars, and led me to muse that his outrage seems to spring from his knowledge, versus some writers about southern Sudan whose outrage impedes their learning. I also occasionally found the division of the book in its latter section into thematic sections confusing, especially in cases where the text would refer to later chapters for more information about a mentioned event or process. Fortunately, the appendix includes both a detailed chronology from 1972 through 2001 and a pretty good topical index for when I needed a bit of help orienting myself. The extensive annotated bibliography would be quite useful for some people. There is also the rather obvious issue that the book was written prior to the finalization of the peace agreement and death of Garang, which makes me anxious for an update.Bottom line: If you want to know about the conflicts in Sudan between 1983 and 2001, then this is the book. If you've read other works on Sudan, you'll be astonished at how thoroughly Johnson annihilates the common wisdom. And whoever you are, you may come to share some of Johnson's outrage.

If you are an expert on Sudan, or know quite a bit already, this book may be 4-star book. If you are only a beginner, who knows little, this book is probably not for you, and you would only get "two stars" out of it. For those not so well-versed, I recommend Jok Madut Jok's book on "Sudan, Race ,Religion and Violence." Douglas Johnson's book is written with the assumption that its audience has some familiarity with Sudan already. All others will get quickly lost in the details of the Sudanese conflict, which are quite extensively (if not exhaustively) presented. The writing can tend to be very academic and dry in parts, but the patient reader will glean some real gems of wisdom - or perhaps I should say hot coals of horror - for the intolerance and blindness which has helped perpetuate this conflict really staggers the mind of all people accustomed to peace and tolerance in a democratic society. This work goes to show that unfortunately most people do not have that experience, as the people in Sudan are locked in a conflict that is "racist" and "religion-ist", while they struggle to lift themselves out of poverty. Again experts or those avid or patient enough will get a lot out of Johnson's book - but the reading will not be easy, especially if you have no real prior knowledge of the Sudanese conflict.

Douglas Johnson's "The Root Causes of Sudan's Civil Wars" was an informative and interesting read. I enjoyed it because it gave me insights into the current crisis and why the South Sudanese still find a reason to continue to fight not only the Sudanese but also fighting among the tribes in South Sudan.

I've read quite a few of Mary Solomon, the author's books on diet and nutrition and this one is very good. It's more of a straight nutrition book rather than a set of recipes. She does point to the Mediterranean diet, the Paleo and the Gluten-Free diets as a source of recipes. I did not understand until I read this well-researched book that there were 80 known autoimmune diseases, with everything from Type One Diabetes to Transplant Rejections included in that list. Celiac Disease is in that list which a lot of Gluten-Free recipe books talk about. So instead of losing weight this book's focus is on foods to eat and foods to avoid, and of course why.

This is a full-lenght detailed guide that provides plenty of information about anti-inflammatory foods and autoimmune system diseases. As someone who suffered from unexpected attacks of uveitis(rare eye condition provoked by auto-immune system deficency), I can personally attest to the effectiviness of this diet. I cured myself utilizing the alkaline and macrobiotic diets that both can be categorized as "anti-inflammatory".You are what you eat- if you, or someone on your family suffers from autoimmune system diseases, I strongly recommend you get aquainted with the information in this book.This diet also helps you have more energy and vibrant health and acts as prevention.I will surely read it again and keep in my kindle collection for reference. It was good, but not great. It kept repeating some things. Did not have lists of things to eat , foods allowed, in an easily readable format, just some foods listed in paragraphs. She can use better titles for her chapters to guide us.About 5 chapters were about Gluten. It would be nice for her to talk about other things (foods) that causes inflammation than just gluten. She refers you to Chapter 13 "Where to find Recipes." You would think she would put several of her own recipes in her book. In this chapter she gives vague general ideas where to find recipes from she says, "the net, blogs and friends", but she gives no net site to view. or recommendations of cook books or links to cookbooks, nothing. She needs a chapter on her own recipes on here I believe people will like this book better if she did. She mentions there are several different meal plans. She keeps saying "meal plans" but give no meal plans of her own. She needs to do more research and create a meal plan of her own and recipes of her own, so we can take her seriously. She keeps referring to the general net and blogs over and again for "meal plans"..I don't think I will get anymore of her books, I would like to encourage her to improve, rather than dis her work, but I cant say I will buy anymore of her books.

As another reviewer noted, I too did not care much for the worldview or personal problems of the author. If you are interested in reading about the career path of a photojournalist, you might be disapointed, depending on that you are expecting. Just be prepared to read a lot about breaking up and getting back together with her boyfriend.Also, the author is very self-centered. I understand that this is a personal account of events, just don't expect a nuanced view of events as described in the book. Below the part where I stopped reading:From page 81:“Ma’am, could you please not take my picture?” one of the Special Forces asked, making me feel like a paparazzo in Kandahar, something I didn’t think possible. “Ma’am . . . it is for our safety,” he explained as he clenched his weapon and threw out phrases in Pashto (the language of most people in Southern Afghanistan) to the Afghan men around him. I looked at my reflection in his oblong shades and wondered how he could be more worried about his safety than mine— I was an unarmed American woman in Kandahar. I continued to photograph until I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was my colleague, the writer, and his tone was abrasive. He wanted to know if I was finished yet, as if it bothered him I was upsetting the Special Forces. It was strange he would interrupt me in the middle of shooting in such a tense environment; it would never dawn on me to interrupt a writer in the middle of an interview in a similar scenario.

As a former military pilot, I've flown photojournos and network television crews into remote areas where they survived hostile fire. Lynsey Addario's story suggests she would have been aboard one of my missions. Her memoir resonates authenticity through and through. She writes with an impassioned honesty that instills credibility to the stories she shares.I wonder if Lynsey realises the sort of adrenaline rush that empowered a lot of her work. She endures harsh battlefield conditions without the sort of basic training all military personnel have to complete. That she can frame a shot, meet editorial demands and recycle to the front line is the sort of routine seen in dramatic mini-series on television screens. But this is no cinematic presentation. This is the story of a combat photojournalist.I currently watch aspiring photographers come through the university programme I teach. It's fair to say that I haven't trained a single student in the past 15 years to wear a flak vest while carrying their DSLR so I doubt any of my students will ever carry Lynsey's camera gear. However, I expect several of my students will discover Lynsey's Life of Love on our library's bookshelf because her written memories are some of the most poignant I have read this century.I'm happy the publisher complemented Lynsey's photography with full colour treatment inside the hard cover book. I wish she had been permitted to run her best shots alongside her storylines but understand how tedious the rights process can be for writers and photographers.More than anything else, I appreciate hearing the perspective of Lynsey Addario resonate from this lovely work. She offers a gripping account of what it takes to remain at the top of your game in the realm of professional journalism. And in her case, it meant staying on the front line of conflicts scattered around the globe.

This is a card trick book. The author should rewrite the title, not what I wanted. I want my money back. Such a scam artist..lol

Let's lay the cards on the table. If someone is going to bet on another mans game then more power to you. This had a few tricks that I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it.

Not bad. Took a few for free drinks. Lost a few too. For now I'm ahead on my bets. Just may sure not to bet young hot heads. Little sense of humor.

The items in this book are best used by people who have very little talent and are looking for foolish tricks to show other foolish people.

It's a great little book with bar tricks, coin tricks, etc. All the explanations are short, but they're well written and do explain the tricks in a way that is easy to fully understand. Out of the fifty tricks he teaches in the book I only found two that I wanted to learn myself. But for me that was great. For the price I'm extremely satisfied.

I definitely fell into the trap of seeing so many 5-star reviews (at the time of this writing there are 57 5-star reviews and a single 3-star review), and was convinced that this book was going to be fantastic.At $1, it's not an outright scam, but I can't see myself using any of the "tricks" in this book to impress any of my friends. I think I was expecting some interesting close-up magic tricks that would be relatively easy to pull off using things you'd find at a bar, but those are largely absent from this book.Here are some of the "highlights":1) Ask your friend which city is further West: Reno or Los Angeles? (SPOILER ALERT: It's not Los Angeles). That is actually one of the 57 "tricks". This is what I'm paying for?2) Carefully peel an orange, trying to keep the peel intact. Wrap the peel around an apple. Peel your new "orange" in front of your friends... yup - that's it. I'm not sure that's going to win a lot of free drinks at the bar!3) Tell your friends that you have a pencil that can write any color. Ask them a color they want your pencil to write. Let's say they pick "red" - take a sheet of paper and write "R-E-D" on the paper. Ha! Free drinks all around, amirite?As you can see - these "tricks" aren't exactly along the lines that I was expecting as a means of pulling clever tricks at a bar with friends. I don't think I'd be willing to even try these on my 5-year old nephew without fear of him groaning at his lame uncle.The only reason I bumped this up to 2-stars is that at $0.99, I don't feel too terribly cheated by this book, but I definitely don't understand where all of these fantastic ratings came from!

This is a beautifully rendered book with great family recipes. The stories that go along with the recipes are also interesting and some are very poignant, like the story about "Mike's Cornbread" recipe (which I am going to try). Mike Hensley, who got the recipe from his mother, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and lost his ability to cook. His family cornbread recipe was lost, but several years later, his wife Marcia received an e-mail from an old friend who had found the recipe, and Marcia contributed it to the book. The historical photographs for many of the family recipes add a dimension not often seen in cook books, and the great photos of the food make you want to bake, and this is the season for it!

This is a nice book with great stories and old pictures that make the recipes more interesting because you know some of the stories about the people where the recipe originated from, but there were two things I didn't like about it. One is that the pictures of the finished food products are horrible. The bigger flaw, to me, is that there are very few sourdough recipes, which is the main reason I bought it. A 217 page cookbook entitled "Sourdough biscuits and Pioneer Pies" only had 12 sourdough recipes in it. It's a nice book for the personal/historical touch, though.

The cover on this book is quite beautiful and a great introduction to the inside. It's full of Old West history and recipes as well as how the recipes were preserved and passed down. Many of the contributors of the recipes still live in this beautiful part of far northern California which lends even more authenticity. The photographs are beautiful in their simplicity and add to the overall historical feel of the book. Healthy, home made, back to basics recipes at their best.

A wide variety of old-time recipes, makes this book the perfect addition to your cookbook collection. The absolute best part is the vintage photographs and the historical information on a variety of cooking basics and practices. Very well layed out and a treat just to read. The perfect gift for a friend. Buy one for yourself too.

A wonderful collection of recipes combined with historical details, vintage photos, and so much more! I could spend hours pouring over this book and trying all the fabulous recipes!

This cookbook is absolutely delightful! Not only does it contain delicious recipes, but has entertaining and informative stories about our rich pioneer heritage. It is a gem for the avid baker and one which I happily add to my treasure of artisan cookbooks collection. I hope you continue to write, Gail Jenner.
