The death of Christopher Hitchens in 2011 left a great hole in my reading life. When the latest Atlantic Monthly arrived in the mail I would always check the contents to see if one of his essays or reviews was included, and if it was I would immediately turn to it. Few living writers have contributed more to intellectual life than Hitchens, as this collection of writings from his last decade and a half attest. The essays and reviews in this collection come from The Atlantic, Slate, and Vanity Fair. They begin with Che Guevara and end with George Orwell. In between we are treated to Hitchens' acerbic observations on the literary and political worlds, including analyses of Rushdie, Lermontov, Naipaul, Dickens, various Clintons and Bushes, as well as an induction of Barack Obama as a "cool cat." Hitchens is particularly unsparing to his fellow journalists, singling out for special scorn so-called celebrity reporters and "news-anchors" too incompetent to do more than lob softballs at mendacious politicians. He turns a disdainful eye on US politics in both blue and red shades but also provides a heartfelt account of his decision to become an American citizen in the early 2000s. We should never forget that Hitchens was one of the great wits of our time, and in this volume we have a good sampling of that with the three part "On the Limits of Self-Improvement" and "The True Spirit of Christmas."Apparently there are many more of Hitchens' essays and reviews still uncollected in book form, which is some of the best news I've heard in quite awhile. A great voice has been stilled, but his words live on.

Admirers of Hitchens (self included) will enjoy this previously uncollected selection of book reviews and short essays. Is this Hitchens at his very best? Perhaps not --- there is an uneven and haphazard feel about the selection. But there is more than enough vintage wit, delightful provocation, and skewering criticism to make for great reading, as well as remind us what we have lost. I am happy to add this to my Hitchens shelf, and will enjoy dipping into it from time-to-time to be reminded that while striving for "intellectual honesty and moral courage" [The Importance of Being Orwell] is serious work, it also can be great fun.

A model for any essay collectionI think that is book will go down as the model for future essay collectionsHitchens himself would (I hope) be happy with itThe essays are awesome, as we've come to expect from HitchensThe best part is that the essays are not in completely random order. There is some degree of topic consistencyMy 4 star rating comes from the fact I don't fully agree with putting book reviews in with fantastic essays.

I enjoyed the book and my only complaint is that it was not longer. I was saddened to finish it and am half-tempted to start again. The essays are classic Hitch. The first essay dates from 1997, but the second is from 2002 and the rest of the essays march along sequentially time-wise until the ending essay from August 2012. There is also a nice coda on patriotism from 1991. All the things that make Hitch great are here - the wit, the little turns of phrase, the pricking of the bubbles of inflated reputations, the standing up for reason and tolerance, the travel vignettes and storytelling that mark his other collections of essays. If you enjoyed Arguably, you will certainly enjoy this. If you are new to Hitch, I don't see why this isn't a good place to start.

What a joy to read the sharp and brilliant views of this sorely missed avatar of pungent and erudite thought, not to mention stylish writing. I refrain from giving it a full five-star rating because many of the individual essays are about subjects unworthy of his attention. Still, it is so uplifting to hear his voice again for Christopher Hitchens really was a singular talent who could even turn dross into gold, renewing one's appreciation of his knowledge and his ability to write brilliantly. How sad he is no longer with us...

Just a great book to pick up anywhere, anytime, and find yourself transported to the rare-aired realms of Christopher Hitchens. He writes on all subjects, having been hired to "write about anything except sports," and better than anyone else. You may not agree with him but never mind: just go along for one of the best rides you will ever have.

"And Yet " by Christopher Hitchens is a collection of short essays on a varieity of topics. Beautifully written and generally informative and interesting.I read all of them, ranging from his personal account of time spent and conversations with notable people to his humorous account of struggles to loose weight, stop smoking and overcome excessive drinking. Hitchens was a smart, educated and erudite writer, very enjoyable in this particular collection of short essays.

...and yet a very satisfying one. As soon as I think myself in comfortable and complete agreement with Hitchens he turns right or left and leaves me on the corner with a wry smile, wondering. Then he backs up his argument, once I figure out exactly what it is, with indisputable fact and I'm again in tow. Here is an erudite perspective on events and figures from the 19th to the 21st century guaranteed to challenge the philosophical convictions of every person.

From the Inside Flap

The Art of Startup Fundraising is the groundbreaking book that offers a step-by-step guide to today's way of raising money for startups. Written by acclaimed entrepreneur Alejandro Cremades, the book includes the tools, strategies, and approaches needed to empower entrepreneurs, from formation to financing. The author reveals the secrets behind the art of raising capital and shows how every ingredient in the process needs to be perfectly balanced in order to secure the needed capital. The book details the milestones to be achieved while launching, nurturing, and growing a startup and lists the important markers investors want and expect. Recent regulations—most notably the JOBS Act—are making the old go-to advice less relevant, as startup money is increasingly moving online. The Art of Startup Fundraising helps entrepreneurs develop a clear business strategy based on the new realities surrounding today's financial landscape. Cremades shows how to best organize a corporate structure, enlist experienced and talented managers, and align a winning team that will attract investors. The Art of Startup Fundraising explores the advantages and pitfalls of the various sources of capital from business loans to angel groups and beyond. The author also offers an in-depth discussion of the venture capital game and gives solid advice for identifying and engaging with prospects, as well as developing a realistic concept of how much to ask from investors. He stresses the vital importance of selecting the right investors. Knowing what to look for in an investor and the key questions to ask potential investors—even those who invest the smallest amounts of initial seed money—is vital to success. Once momentum has been created and the ideal investor shows interest in a business venture, it is time to close the deal. The Art of Startup Fundraising offers invaluable advice for creating a completion schedule that shows all concerned parties when to expect an agreement to become legally binding. However, once a deal is closed the work isn't done. It becomes one more stepping-stone on the startup journey. No matter if you are the founder of a startup or looking for an exciting investment opportunity, The Art of Startup Fundraising offers the must-have guidance you need.

The author preliminarily addresses his book to young people starting their first business ever; hence, he sprinkles it with a lot of basic common-sense business advice. His paternalistic tone can be a little annoying sometimes to readers with some business experience. On the other hand, the author provides comprehensive insight into the fundraising process, with many helpful details, which made reading the book worthwhile.Obviously, one may ask why the fundraising for a startup became so complicated, and does it have to be this way? Mr. Cremades does not have this kind of seditious thoughts. The problem is not with founders not dancing properly around angel investors as Mr. Cremades assumes. The problem is with angel investors who do not have perseverance in hunting for the business opportunities before they reach the stage where it is a no-brainer to see it.The full text of my review is on my blog.

I recommend this book to all those who are just beginning in the world of startups, regardless of whether they are students or business people. In a few pages, it helps to understand the investor’s vision, to determine the steps to follow and to know what to do and what not to do. With just a few dollars and a few hours of reading, you will be saving time and money you would otherwise spend on consultants, which you will now be able to allocate to your ideas and business. Also, a special mention goes to Bárbara Corcoran’s foreword – a real gem. I have already printed and put in a frame on my desk the phrase “I knew the secret to growing a business fast is to never wait until you're ready”. I just hope that investors like this approach to businesses.

As a former corporate VP that’s taken the plunge into the world of co-founding a start-up, I found The Art of Startup Fundraising to be a great overview of the capital raising process. If you haven’t had prior start-up experience, the fundraising process can appear highly daunting and a long road of trial and error if you lack the right game plan. Alejandro has laid out a clear, insightful roadmap for how to successfully travel down the path of fundraising your new venture. The book covers a lot of ground on key topics such as: why you should raise capital, how to craft your pitch, how to identify and solicit investors, and how to close investment deals. However, the book doesn’t go as deep into some areas that would be beneficial. For example, given that convertible notes are becoming a common method for early stage start-up investment from friends & family and angels, it would be nice to see a more detailed explanation of this approach. Perhaps a pros/cons of raising investment using straight equity financing versus convertible note debt financing (or the new SAFE note approach advocated by Y-Combinator and briefly touched on in the book) would be useful for many here.I also like that Alejandro gets into the psychology of investing; what gets a lead investor on board first and the group mentality that can follow with momentum of both the business and the investments raised.Overall the book was a practical and enlightening read and I am using it as the “fundraising handbook” for our start-up. I have tabbed pages with my notes all over the margins that I’m going back to for reference. I also found the book inspirational and motivational – I am now confident that I indeed am capable of getting out there and successfully fundraising for my start-up!

This book is fine to read, however, it should be made clear that it is just an overview with limited substance. For example, the author writes "Try to keep terms as attractive as possible for you and your investors". Indeed, it is a good piece of advice, but what does it really mean? If you want to learn more substance on this subject, read Brad Feld's "Venture Deals".

I am in the startup space and will soon be seeking capital. I have read several books that discuss how to best go about doing this. Several things make Alejandro Cremades' book stand out for me: 1) It's written in very simple and conversational language, it's very easy to follow (other books in this space tend to sound dry and technical, they don't hold one's attention as well); 2) The type size is nice and big -- again, easier to read; 3) The book is very practical, it is filled with good advice to take -- and mistakes to avoid; 4) The book talks a lot about "the people factor" involved in fundraising (it's not just numbers and pitch decks); and 5) I felt like the author was a friend who truly wanted me to succeed (I never felt like he was lecturing me, or telling me how HE did it). I genuinely enjoyed this book and will surely turn back to it in coming months.

Excellent book that belongs in every start-up founder's library.

Alejandro's experience-based guide to startup fundraising provides both concrete steps and insights into what captures the interest, imagination AND money specific to "startups". Let's face it. At the end of the day a founder needs a checklist of the most important documents, pitch approaches, and team building insights to successfully differentiate their ideas, products and services from the next guy or gal. If you are a startup founder seeking funding, this is a must read. As a former founder, small business advisor, and financial planner, I found this to be value packed and relevant. I have forwarded this on to the startup founders that I currently advise for and we are applying many of the concepts and processes within its pages. Nice work!

Cremades's Art of Startup Fundraising is a direct-to-the-point no-fluff guide for early-stage entrepreneurs, initiating their search for capital. Seldom have I found as much direct, concise and actionable advise and tools. It's a short easy-read that I would recommend to anyone that's entertaining the idea of starting a business or full-on initiating the capital raising process.
