The death of Christopher Hitchens in 2011 left a great hole in my reading life. When the latest Atlantic Monthly arrived in the mail I would always check the contents to see if one of his essays or reviews was included, and if it was I would immediately turn to it. Few living writers have contributed more to intellectual life than Hitchens, as this collection of writings from his last decade and a half attest. The essays and reviews in this collection come from The Atlantic, Slate, and Vanity Fair. They begin with Che Guevara and end with George Orwell. In between we are treated to Hitchens' acerbic observations on the literary and political worlds, including analyses of Rushdie, Lermontov, Naipaul, Dickens, various Clintons and Bushes, as well as an induction of Barack Obama as a "cool cat." Hitchens is particularly unsparing to his fellow journalists, singling out for special scorn so-called celebrity reporters and "news-anchors" too incompetent to do more than lob softballs at mendacious politicians. He turns a disdainful eye on US politics in both blue and red shades but also provides a heartfelt account of his decision to become an American citizen in the early 2000s. We should never forget that Hitchens was one of the great wits of our time, and in this volume we have a good sampling of that with the three part "On the Limits of Self-Improvement" and "The True Spirit of Christmas."Apparently there are many more of Hitchens' essays and reviews still uncollected in book form, which is some of the best news I've heard in quite awhile. A great voice has been stilled, but his words live on.
Admirers of Hitchens (self included) will enjoy this previously uncollected selection of book reviews and short essays. Is this Hitchens at his very best? Perhaps not --- there is an uneven and haphazard feel about the selection. But there is more than enough vintage wit, delightful provocation, and skewering criticism to make for great reading, as well as remind us what we have lost. I am happy to add this to my Hitchens shelf, and will enjoy dipping into it from time-to-time to be reminded that while striving for "intellectual honesty and moral courage" [The Importance of Being Orwell] is serious work, it also can be great fun.
A model for any essay collectionI think that is book will go down as the model for future essay collectionsHitchens himself would (I hope) be happy with itThe essays are awesome, as we've come to expect from HitchensThe best part is that the essays are not in completely random order. There is some degree of topic consistencyMy 4 star rating comes from the fact I don't fully agree with putting book reviews in with fantastic essays.
I enjoyed the book and my only complaint is that it was not longer. I was saddened to finish it and am half-tempted to start again. The essays are classic Hitch. The first essay dates from 1997, but the second is from 2002 and the rest of the essays march along sequentially time-wise until the ending essay from August 2012. There is also a nice coda on patriotism from 1991. All the things that make Hitch great are here - the wit, the little turns of phrase, the pricking of the bubbles of inflated reputations, the standing up for reason and tolerance, the travel vignettes and storytelling that mark his other collections of essays. If you enjoyed Arguably, you will certainly enjoy this. If you are new to Hitch, I don't see why this isn't a good place to start.
What a joy to read the sharp and brilliant views of this sorely missed avatar of pungent and erudite thought, not to mention stylish writing. I refrain from giving it a full five-star rating because many of the individual essays are about subjects unworthy of his attention. Still, it is so uplifting to hear his voice again for Christopher Hitchens really was a singular talent who could even turn dross into gold, renewing one's appreciation of his knowledge and his ability to write brilliantly. How sad he is no longer with us...
Just a great book to pick up anywhere, anytime, and find yourself transported to the rare-aired realms of Christopher Hitchens. He writes on all subjects, having been hired to "write about anything except sports," and better than anyone else. You may not agree with him but never mind: just go along for one of the best rides you will ever have.
"And Yet " by Christopher Hitchens is a collection of short essays on a varieity of topics. Beautifully written and generally informative and interesting.I read all of them, ranging from his personal account of time spent and conversations with notable people to his humorous account of struggles to loose weight, stop smoking and overcome excessive drinking. Hitchens was a smart, educated and erudite writer, very enjoyable in this particular collection of short essays.
...and yet a very satisfying one. As soon as I think myself in comfortable and complete agreement with Hitchens he turns right or left and leaves me on the corner with a wry smile, wondering. Then he backs up his argument, once I figure out exactly what it is, with indisputable fact and I'm again in tow. Here is an erudite perspective on events and figures from the 19th to the 21st century guaranteed to challenge the philosophical convictions of every person.
