This is very good rendering of the pastel works of this artist. I had seen his work online and wanted a closer, full color plate look at his art works. This book delivers. It is filled with art like the cover picture. I did not buy this book for the text.The only criticism I have of the art work is that as time goes on, I find myself looking at the book less and less. I think this may be because the work varies so little. Generally, I am the opposite with art work I really love. I open those books more and more with the passage of time.If you work in pastels or want to work in pastels though, it is well worth viewing Kahn's work. It gives one lots of ideas for one's own pastel works plus really opens the door to abstractions in pastel.

This is an inspiring book that makes you want to go out and paint. Wolf Kahn is a clear and insightful writer who infuses his words with a touch of humor. There are 100 full sized color prints accompanied by 1-2 page essays about each picture relates to his various strategies, or "specific recurring systems of organization." Kahn says, "They enable me to limit the way I want to go, giving me a focus and helping me to know exactly when the picture is finished."

Not only are the color plates in this book beautiful and accurate, but the writing about his process is informative and inspiring, read it from cover to cover one afternoon- love it and I will be using it as a reference book for my own painting.

Kahn is a wonderful and interesting pastelist, and I am glad I bought this book! The reproductions are very clear and detailed, colors are beautiful. this is not a technique book, but in each short chapter he gives us his opinion on many artistic matters, and an insight into the way that he thinks and work. Very well written. I refer to this book frequently when I do my own work, whether or not I agree with everything he does, because there is a clarity in his thought about how he works.

I just received the book and find it almost impossible to put down. The colors are gorgeous, a true feast for the eyes. Kahn's works have a deceptive simplicity of color and line; it's when the reader really studies each illustration that you see just how complex the compositions are. Lovely book, beautiful illustrations, wonderful artist.

This is definitely one of the best art books I have read recently. Whether you do pastels or not does not really matter. The way Wolf describes his thought process and the way he expresses his conflict and struggle with his and medium's limitations at times to produce something which is beyond a cheap bag of tricks is awesome. Very inspiring and true. Here is an artist who can also write and express as beautifully as he can paint. It is a great gift to have discovered this book.

I love this book. I wish I could paint like Wolf Kahn. The pictures are so incredible.

My summer reading goals include some historical fiction titles and literary classics, so I like to add some light mysteries and pool reads to the list. This book had some laugh-out-loud moments but was Lifetime-Movie predictable from beginning to end. I felt the biggest distraction was the author's display of her political preferences and attempted humor directed at religion that more than hinted at disrespect.If the context had remained the same, but words changed to a race or another religious belief - I'm sure the author would not have utilized that to attempt humor.If you're into light reading - get a rock to anchor the book to your table.There are plenty of fun reads out there. I won't be seeking out this author again.

I loved this book on several levels: 1. Great setting, something different from the standard. Western Michigan on the lake. 2. Fantastic characterization. By the end of the book, I was in love with the characters and would have wanted to live with all of them as well. I don't know if they were based on real people, but the author really did a good job of creating characters that leave an impression. 3. Writing humor is very, very difficult, and Brogan's humor was refreshing and truly funny. I re-read some of the more clever lines in hopes of remembering them, and that's saying something for all the reading and writing I do. 4. A strong plot supported by interesting subplots that made sense and moved the story along. It wasn't face-paced nor did it drag. The momentum was consistent and everything came together in the end.I had the advantage of reading this book after one that tried to be funny but wasn't. There is a distinct difference. I loved this author's writing style and see her as a true talent. Highly recommend!

I have to say that anyone who would give this book only one star has absolutely no sense of humor! You poor things.As a constant reader nearly my entire life, I found this to be one of the funniest books I've ever read, which is saying a lot. I've lost track of how many times I've laughed out loud. I love this book and I'm only a little over a fourth of the way through it, and can barely put it down. I've never read Tracy Brogan before, but I had downloaded three of her books, thank goodness, all Bell Harbor novels. I got them for a bargain price of $1.99 each. I only wish she'd already written a bunch of books rather than just a handful so far.If the other two books I downloaded are anywhere near as enjoyable as this one, I am looking forward to a lot more from Tracy Brogan.Now back to the hilarious Sadie, her funny Aunt Dody, and that adorable Des, not to mention those "carbuncles" on the bottoms of ships. Oh, and right after I sent in this review and went back to the book, I read that Sadie's daughter loved to read, " a product of being named Paige Turner." Another laugh out loud moment. Thank goodness we can edit our reviews!

Sadie, late 20's, divorced mother of two young kids, decides to spend the summer by Lake Michigan with her kooky aunt and assorted grown-up male cousins. There she meets Des, 36yo Scottish doctor, and an offbeat courtship/relationship ensues.This was a pretty quick read. Although it wanted to be really funny, it came off more as ridiculous in my opinion. I've read other romances where I actually laughed out loud (some books by Sophie Kinsella, for one) but this was not really one of them. However, it was still an enjoyable read--Des was totally HOT and a nice guy without being a wuss or a control freak--best case scenario.Sadie JUST skirted the edge of being one of those heroines who says, "I don't know why he would like me, I'm such a mess" and you find yourself agreeing with her. She pulled back just enough between the ridiculous acts of craziness that I wasn't totally annoyed with her. Although, strangely, I never really got a sense of what she looked like. Brown hair and eyes, and she denigrated herself at every turn. But others said she was beautiful, even her ex and he was a total narcissist who would probably never be caught dead with anyone rating less than a 9. She said she had worked out like crazy to try to "help her marriage" before the divorce so her body was great, but a few pages later, she'd be saying how she had to stand up straight and suck in her gut when Des was near. She just never came into focus.There's a bit of sex in the book but none of it is graphic or even detailed. Even so it didn't bother me. I would have liked to have seen more of Sadie and Des as a couple among other people. It seemed like almost every time they were together and happy, it was in private. Any other time they were shown in public something ridiculous happened. Ridiculous was a running theme in this book. When they went sailing with Des's friends, it was the only time they were out among others that some kind of zaniness didn't occur. Truthfully, I spent the whole chapter waiting for her to fall in the water or something.In any event, the reason I decided to write this review is because if I had known before reading what I found out on THE LAST PAGE I would not have bought the book:SPOILERS*********************************There seem to be whole chapters missing in the end. Sadie never has any kind of real understanding or communication with her mother. It was like her mother was just a one-dimensional prop to show Sadie what she could turn into, without explaining why or how she got there. At one point, Sadie's aunt sums the mother up in one line--someone must have disappointed her at some point and it made her not trust anyone. Could she be any more vague??We don't find out if Sadie's aunt will be okay. Although, that vagueness didn't bother me as much as the first.BUT, the biggest problem for me, was the fact that AT NO TIME, not even when Des comes back and tells Sadie he needs her and she makes him "flustered" does he EVER say, he loves her. And she doesn't either. As a matter of fact, Sadie says a couple of times that she isn't in love with him, or she might be falling for him. The only time she actually says she loves Des, is when she's lying to her ex.I was so floored. It was bad enough the author waits until the last 2 friggin' pages to get them back together. But then to not even reach the finish line (in these books, the L word is the finish line IMO), was completely disappointing. I was so annoyed, I reread the last few pages to make sure I hadn't missed it. But--no! He never says he loves her.END SPOILERS******So there you have it--ridiculous zaniness with some amusing side characters and a hot leading man but, in the end, unsatisfying--for me, at least.

A perfect mixture of comedy abnd romance. Sadie, a divorced mother of 2, moves to Bell Harbor to get away from her ex relax. She meets Des, an ER doctor, and the chase and humor begins. Sadie stays with her Aunt Dody, an off kilter person, who continually spouts malapropisms, asks inapprropriarpte questions, but has a heart of gold. Sadie overthinks, get flustered easily, but has a sharp wit, and despite herself, finds her attraction to Des growing. Des has his own issues, but is inexorably drawn to Sadie. With many missteps along the way, and plenty ohf humor, Sadie and Des find each other.

This is the third book I have read by Dr. Zhi Gang Sha and I dislike like this one (Tao 1: The way of all life-465 pages hardcover) for the same reasons in my review of the other two huge volumes. The author sure knows how to fill up a book with chants, songs, mantras and repeating “thank you” hundreds of times. The repeating of these various prayers and chants is tedious and boring. The author stresses that you to follow every lesson in this book for hours and hours of practice. If you followed the lessons in this book by the letter it would still take years to master. This book is filled with numerous chants and prayers which the author keeps repeating over and over and over and over the same material!!!!!!!!!!!! (Gets boring doesn’t it?) That's what reading this giant volume is all aboutOver the years I have read numerous books on Taoism and related Eastern philosophies and I found this one to be the most boring volume I have ever read on Taoism. I have studied numerous martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Kenjutsu and Tantojutsu) and healing esoteric healing arts such as Tai Chi, Qigong, Yoga and Reiki for more than 60 years. I love Zen and Taoist philosophy and I thought this book might enlighten me further, but I was wrong. To be fair there are some interesting aspects of this book and for those who are really into this author’s work they may find some value reading this huge volume.If you are seeking to learn a simple and easy to learn Taoist healing system this is NOT the book for you; however, if you are the kind of person who enjoys chanting for hours and constantly thanking every spiritual entity in the known and unknown universe you might want to read this book and the other books in his “Soul series.” I think it is amazing that the author was on the "New York times best selling author."As someone who is a Reiki master, and also studied Jin Shin Jyutsu, hand Reflexology, Qigong, and other related esoteric and energy healing subjects I can only give this book a fair (OK read) read at best.Rating: 3 Stars. Thank you Dr. and Master Sha for this beautiful work. His book and the practices are life transforming. It is a transformational guide to reconnection with the divine, to love and light, love,peace and harmony. It is a healer for health conditions and all challenging conditions. The practice is divine. Dr. Sha also offers complimentary service on his website with daily practices to do the chanting and receive the greater benefit of all the wisdom and divine frequencies in his book and practices. There are so many free services offered on his site. There is so much support. We are experiencing the healing from these practices in our life everyday in so many ways. Thank you Master Sha. Thank you Divine.

Let me start by saying that I am not an advanced student of Master Sha's, but I keep hanging around his website, his books, and his people, because the benefits are undeniable. I have not dedicated my life to the mission of transforming Mother Earth and helping all humanity as many have, but no one has kicked me out of the movement for that. They patiently help me as I stumble along, learning as best I can. I do not have the answers for anyone. I can only say that for me there is something very very special about Master Sha, his teachers and this movement. My heart grows in leaps and bounds, and my life expands in a completely surprising and wonderful way - and yes, as a direct result of the things I learn from Master Sha and his books, his website and Facebook community. The Tao I book is the best book for me so far. Sometimes it's very hard to believe something can be so powerful and effective when it feels so simple. Master Sha presents a Tao Jing chant and even sings it in a CD that comes with the book. This chant, when I listen to it and sing it, leaves me feeling well (healthy) and healed in body, mind and soul. Of course, I make mistakes and so must return and get healed again, but it's always there for me. I like to think "one step back, two steps forward," and I'm making progress. So I guess I'm speaking to the ordinary soul out there, like me, who is interested in growing spiritually. My friend, this will do it if you lend yourself to the process. As I read and understand what Dr Sha is providing in this book and other's in the soul healing series are geninune and workable.Dr Sha is one of a few who provides an excellent way to understand the unity between the soul the body and the Tao, and how their mal-alignment causes difficultieswith health etc. It's the best information about this topic I have read. I know that he practices what he preaches. He is one of the few I found so far who accurately describes 'sick' energy. My own experiences taught me that sick energy is ALWAYS heavy. I read the reviews claiming this is a very basic book on gardening, and yes,,,,yes it isThere are only SO many really intricate gardening plans that once could execute before it gives you and the nursery you work with a major headacheI HAVE grown perennials for 25 yrs, I HAVE gone complicated and gotten frustrated and tossed out plants , ( and normally those that came with a price tag that was on the high side)One thing I learned in all my years of gardening on 3 country acres,,,,,is KEEP IT SIMPLE( fill in the blank here)I have 4 heavy shade gardens that no longer have a single flower in them because 10 yrs ago I decided I liked the looks of the foliage better than the flowers and I think I did that before it became vogue to do just that. It was practical and it pleased my senses.These gardens are simple, they work,,,,,,they are filled w/ many hostas, climbing hydrengas, ferns and other shade loving annuals ( coleus, and yearly bulbs) so they work for me , All survived a huge drought we had last summer, and are looking pretty darn good w, the heavy snow and spring rains this yearI have succulent gardens in my birdbath and outside sitting in flat pots on the deck, and have mixed lots of herbs in my perennial border ( just bc its easy to snip for dinner!) and gosh,,it smells SO good when passing it! I garden for all sensese not just to look, but to smell good too!This year I dug up the entire front garden, had the wall re done and am doing almost ALL annuals fora full summer riot of color and its FUN!I added cannas, orange trumpet ,dahlias and a few other things bc this is really hot hot sun ( my home faces south west)Its fantastic the sea of color I created in a 5 ft wide by 25 ft long areaI like this book bc it shows anyone how easy it is to figure out things for a successful garden ( gardens in my case)Who says simple is cannot be stunning?? Add the angel trumpets and the elephant ears and the garden speaks volumes to me,So I want to say that this indeed is a simplistic way of looking at doing a garden the proportions are good, the ideas are very good, the plans alone are worth the price of the bookI just wish I had a book like this 25 yrs ago so I could have saved myself so many many expensive mistakes,,,,,,,but then again, a garden does teach you patienceLove the book would give this to any new homeowner or anyone attempting to design a wonderful garden for the first,,,,or the fifth time~

The Nonstop Garden is packed with all sorts of ideas and the pictures are lovely. Somehow the flowers and plants discussed in this book are exactly the ones I've been considering and wondering where and how to use them in my garden.The authors advise that we "Garden Smarter, Not Harder", which works for me. I'm tired. I'm looking for practical ways to make my garden beautiful without making more work for myself. I was particularly interested in the many advantages of planting a variety of plants: perennials, annuals, herbs, tropicals, trees, and shrubs, all together rather than grouped by kind. They say that variety is better for purposes of diversity, creativity, less maintenance, and year-round interest. Then there's the advantage of developing a habitat for wildlife.I know that I am enjoying a book when I grab my highlighter. This book is simple enough to be easy to understand and complete enough to teach me things I didn't even know I needed to know. I'm glad I bought it. Now I want to get back to it and dig out more ideas.

This book will be of no help to anyone but the beginner gardener, in my mind. I was really looking forward to detailed and specific advice about how to plan a garden that provides year-round interest but this piece of fluff doesn't even come close to being helpful. Their advice can be summed up in two words: variety and diversity. Plant a variety (trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, bulbs, etc.) of different types and then put 3/5/7 of them in clumps according to height. What a joke - if you have done any gardening, you know that already. And by the way, you can find better garden plans online at BHG's site for free. The rest of the book (75%) contains plant suggestions and sometimes offers companion plant suggestions - nice, but not what you are led to believe you are getting. I live very remotely and have to order books online and it is moments like this that I wish I could have just flipped through it in the store. I am beyond irritated that I wasted money on this book.

Wish I had this when we first moved into our house. We are in the process of re-creating our entire yard (+1 acre). It is easy to read and I love it that the author will indicate zone when describing each plant in her design. It is easy to follow her instructions and love the photos of the plants as well as the landscape design template. There is also a chart in the back showing peak performance of several trees, shrubs, etc. broken down by season. It also shows the zone. When describing each plant/shrub/trees, she will indicate which ones are invasive and their non invasive replacements.

Despite the very respectable backgrounds of the authors, THE NONSTOP GARDENER was even less than basic because it was so information-poor. There are many illustrations, but the illustrations are not that helpful. To me, it seems that the authors hastily threw together a book just to make a fast buck.

Excellent! Easy reading and a great guide to create or correct a garden. I love every idea, suggestion and insight in it.

Love this book. Pictures are beautiful and plant selections are great. Sections are organized by plant type (trees, shrubs, perennials, etc.) so the sections also tend to go by height, which makes it easy designing a bed from back to front. I've since loaned this book to 2 friends who were just starting out or who needed to redo a bed.

Wonderful book it is part of a 20 book collection I Resenty purchased for my wife. Thank you.😊

I love to read Freedman's works. He always does a fantastic job of telling important stories from history. And he tells them in such a readable fashion. The story of the White Rose movement is a particularly powerful story since it revolves around a group of young adults courageously standing up for what they believed in. Hans Scholl and his sister Sophie, along with their friends enjoyed being part of the Hitler Youth, at least at first, they enjoyed the hiking and camping and other physical activities. But after going to a large rally, Hans started to become uncomfortable with the unquestioning obedience and brainwashing that was such a big part of the Hitler Youth Program. As Hans and Sophie grew up, they struggled with the contradictions around them and the contrast between their own beliefs and what Hitler and his Nazi party stood for. After experiencing Gestapo tactics first hand, Hans became ever more doubtful of the Nazis. At college, Hans and Sophie and their friends started writing, producing, and mailing leaflets around Germany, sharing what they saw as being very wrong with Hitler's beliefs and methods. Even though they knew they were risking their lives, they could not bring themselves to be quiet about what was so very wrong in their country. Freedman does a great job telling this compelling story of integrity and courage and sacrifice. When Hans and Sophie and others among their group got caught, they faced death with dignity and a firm belief in what they were doing. And their example inspired others to carry the cause forward and produce more leaflets. To this day, the White Rose movement in remembered and memorialized in several places in Germany. An inspiring story of courage and the power of belief in the face of almost unbeatable odds.

This book focuses most on the story of Hans and Sophie Scholl, the most renown members of the White Rose.It is a well written and well researched account. Freedman manages to frame the struggle that the White Rose faced within the context of WWII, and recreate Hans and Sophie as relatable heroes.I enjoyed reading this, although it is a tragic story. And even though I was already acquainted with the story, felt this shed new perspective on the story and did a great job filling in gaps in my knowledge. The photos were especially well chosen and helpful.I recommend this for most young people today as an inspiring tale of civil action in the face of societal wrongs.

Intended for young readers, but good for mature readers as well. Tells an important part of the history of Nazified Germany. Not all could remained silent, but they had to be secret - free speech could and did result in death.

This is a small but powerful book. It beautifully tells the story of a group of college students who stood up to Hitler and ended up losing everything. The White Rose was brave and based on there internal integrity. I recommend it.

I did not realize this was a book aimed at younger readers. It tells the story of the student organization, the White Rose, that produced 6 leaflets protesting Hitler and the Nazi's. It a good book for the youth to read.

Well written and informational -- makes you wonder if the people of your generation would do the same if put in a similar situation.

I bought this book for a friend. And we BOTH love it. It's a quick, smart read, and should be viewed as critically important to anyone trying to survive in the car dealership business today.
