From School Library Journal
K-Gr 3—This artist monograph benefits from the intimate familiarity of the creators with the subject: it is written by Keith Haring's sister and illustrated by one of his colleagues from the 1980s New York City art scene. The author emphasizes Haring's early appreciation of art and his later generosity with it. The illustrations incorporate sketches made by a young Haring, and the text explores how he would go on to give many of his paintings away or create them in public places. The title offers an enlightening look at the merits of street art and how it allows those who may not ordinarily venture into a museum or gallery to experience and enjoy art. The visuals, created with a Mac computer and pencil, are inspired by the illustrator's personal photos and memories of the time period. Haring's later works, from his adult years, are included; an addendum features reproductions as well as family photos. Children will relate to young Haring's drive to pursue his calling despite naysayers. VERDICT This book will help fill contemporary art history gaps within library collections for children.—Suzanne LaPierre, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

* "This laudatory biography, written by Haring’ssister, is guided by his unapologetic rejection of artistic pretension and illustratedin—what else?—a friendly and accessible cartoony style that fluidly integratesHaring’s own work on subway cars and buildings, as well as in galleries." — Horn Book, starred review"Neubecker’s colorful illustrations capture the energy with which Keith [Haring] lived his life, and cleverly integrate some of the artist’s original works... Always upbeat, this story is a celebration of art and life." — Booklist"Neubecker neatly incorporates Haring's real pieces into these zesty, bustling, digital-and-pencil illustrations.... Haring's work pops; Neubecker's compositions and enthusiastic crowd scenes do it wonderful credit." — Kirkus"An enlightening look at the merits of street art and how it allows those who may not ordinarily venture into a museum or gallery to experience and enjoy art....Children will relate to young Haring’s drive to pursue his calling despite naysayers." —School Library Journal"Cheerily energetic....Schools with “Picture Person” programs, as well as primary grades art teachers, will want to share this appealing title." —BCCB"Exuberant...Neubecker (I Won a What?) combines images of Haring’s work (all identified in a closing spread) with his own punchy cartooning, which dovetails perfectly with the effervescent energy that characterized Haring’s imagery." —Publishers Weekly

I wish this book were better. I have purchased many artist books for children and look for insight into the artist or their artistic style. This book lacks both those elements. The “boy who kept drawing†does not capture the reader’s imagination. What was he drawing? Why did he draw? How was he inspired? Who knows? The answers are not in this book.
My whole family loves this book! As an art teacher and mom, I was so excited to see this new book. I've already used it in my art camp this summer and my children ask for it to be read to them multiple times a day. The quote from Keith at the end brought tears to my eyes. Kay has made something so beautiful- a tribute to Keith and her knowing and loving him and growing up with him, a tribute to his life, work, and art, and just an amazing and beautiful story. I've never recommended a children's book more strongly.
Fabulous book! In an interview with the Huffington Post, Kay Haring said the takeaway was : “Dream big, work hard, give back!" What an inspiring message for all ages!!I got a book for myself and then thought of numerous friends who would love to read it and share it with their kids and friends---so I've gifted them with copies, hoping it motivates people to create and engage, and make this world a better place! What a lovely story, charmingly told and beautifully illustrated. Super happy to have this delightful book read and to share!
I have been sharing Haring's work with my students for over twenty years. We dedicate a day to creating quick, sloppy artwork every year. I was having to adapt his story into a biography using books and video clips. This book gives my students an instant connection to Keith's life and inspiration for being an artist. Very pleased. Such a fine purchase. My students want to be artists thanks to the work of Keith Haring. Now they also want to write their own stories because of the work of Kay Haring.
The reason I got the book was because Husband grow up in Kutztown,Pa...Keith Haring family and my husband family went to the same Church in Kutztown,Pa. Also I like the way Keith did his drawing's because they are very different....
I saw this book on an art website that suggested it to go along with a Keith Haring art activity. As a 3rd grade teacher, this is right up my alley! The book was well-written and my students were so engaged. The message of the artist's life was lovely and inspiring, but also appropriate for children. The original artwork was beautiful, but it also included some of Haring's artwork.
Both my 3 and 4 year old grandkids love this book. We saw his art at the local museum a few years ago. Love his art and glad his sister wrote this book.
Great book for an elementary school art classroom! Easy to read with actual images of art by Keith haring. I am excited to read this to the kids for a Valentine’s Day project!
