Warmly pastoral. Responsibly Pithy. Tactfully polemic. Joyfully profound. As “Five Points” shows us, these truths can be presented in different ways. Some use the acronym TULIP. Timothy George prefers ROSES, and John Piper uses a different order, but these doctrines are fragrant flowers no matter what they’re named. Here are a few of my favorite bits from this helpful, little book. “The more you know him, the more you want to know him. The more you feast on his fellowship, the hungrier you are for deeper, richer communion. Satisfaction at the deepest levels breeds a holy longing for the time when we will have the very power of God to love God.”: “My experience is that clear knowledge of God from the Bible is the kindling that sustains the fires of affection for God.”; “The perseverance of the saints is not the guarantee of perfection, but rather that God will keep us fighting the fight of faith so that we hate our sin and never make any lasting peace with it.”. I also enjoyed Jonathan Edwards on tasting honey, George Mueller on his experience with these doctrines and J.I. Packer’s appeal.

Years ago, I read A.W. Tozer’s “The Pursuit of God”. I had heard much about it, but I was disappointed. Later, I came back to it, and it was like I was reading a different book. It was electrifying. Evidently, I wasn’t ready for it the first time. I have sometimes felt that way reading John Piper. Some of it is over my head, and leaves me feeling dazed. Having said that, he has been a trustworthy guide leading me closer to the greatest splendor, God Himself. Every Piper book I’ve ever read has been richly rewarding and “God is the Gospel” is no exception. Here are a few of my favorite gems from this book. “We are willing to be God-centered, it seems, as long as God is man-centered.” “The gospel is the good news of our final and full enjoyment of the glory of God in the face of Christ.” “Tell the old, old story and pray for the Spirit.” “Beholding is becoming.” “We absorb what we admire.” In addition, I enjoyed the quotes from Jonathan Edwards and John Owen, as well as the example of counseling a teenager about pornography and the explanation of why God created bread. Thought-provoking. Life-changing. Electrifying.

I deeply respect Dr. John Piper for his teaching and faithful ministry through long years. I would not say that I can fully agree with His point in the book. What I suspect he is really trying to say is, "Stay active for God to the very end." What some will understand, I fear when they read this brief book is that a pastor should die in his pulpit rather than step aside to other service for God. I have unfortunately see and heard such pastors who were destroying their congregations by refusing to step aside (retire from that place of service). I determined long ago that I would not be one of these pastors who could not step aside. I have done that. People call me retired. But, I am as active as before, just in different ways.

This is a lucid and succinct treatment of doctrines about which countless books have been written. And all delivered in the fireside-like pastoral way I've come to expect from John Piper. With him you sit down as with an old friend, and talk of great things, and savor the Greatest One. Besides the length, which was great for an afternoon read or two, I appreciated the listing of the major texts supporting each doctrine within the chapters, and the citation of doctors of the church in distant past and more recent centuries on the centrality of these doctrines to faith and practice and the general interpretation of the unity of the whole of scripture. I personally remember first wrestling with these truths in college as I delved deeper into the core beliefs of the faith in which I was raised, but in which I had only recently been included by the Sovereign grace of God himself, at his very set time. Tellingly, in understanding the grace and glory of the sovereign Lord at the heart of the whole of scripture, the rest of my Bible study has been thoroughly empowered and uniquely clarified up to the present time. I would wholeheartedly recommend this for use with the laity as well as for supplementing more intense academic reading.

I bought and read this book on the recommendation of another whose opinion I respect. I mention this because while I am not a Piper detractor, I am not a Piper fan for a range of reasons, so not only would I not have bought this book on my own, but even with a valued recommendation I still approached the book a bit skeptically. I was completely wrong -- it is an amazingly warming, motivating, broadening discussion of God's initiating love for his creation and reading it is to experience worship. There were times in the reading when I just stopped for a moment -- it was too much to absorb, to digest, to appreciate, to say thanks for. The book weaves large amounts of scripture with commentary to convey its message. It combines the insights of a commentary with the orientation of a devotional book and is suitable for anyone from early teens onward.
