I am an experience bread maker. I have tried 2 recipes in the book , the foccacia and the challah, Both recipes were unsatisfactory. I weigh my ingredients --one recipe was too wet and the other was too dry. I had to adjust the amount of water and flour just to get a reasonably manageable dough. I'm wondering if the author just divided the commercial amounts in order to be used by the home baker. Did she use baker's percentages? Were these recipes ever tested?

Its a lovely book with glaring flaws. As one of the other reviewers have noted the recipes don't always work - even though it is a book to inspire you and tempt you with the stories and the photographs.Looking closely at some recipes - the Barbari recipe on page 64 - suggests where the authors slipped up. Looks like they only cared about the "cup" measures and the translation into weights are completely wrong. The recipe suggests 2 cups water and four cups flour - hydration percentage of 50% but the weights are 450 gms water and 510 gms flour - a hydration ratio of almost 90%. If you use the weights - as I did - you quickly realize something is seriously wrong - it flows like soup. The same recipe suggests 1/3 cup water for the wash which translates according to them as 80 gms water - the math is all over the place! Someone paid no attention to this recipe at all.I threw away my first batch of four/dough - was really upset. I recreated at 63% hydration and it went really well.So a great book if you want to be inspired but beware the numbers and double check the math - when it does not add up - do what i did - go to the internet and check what others are doing.

I've only made one recipe from this so far. That was the New York deli rye. I am a New Yorker originally and for the last few years I have been trying to recreate the chewy, dense rye bread of my childhood. I tried recipes from Rose Levy Berenbaum, two from King Arthur Flour, one from King Solomon's Table (great book), and countless ones off the internet. And Eureka, this is it. I added two generous teaspoons of deli rye flavor (basically just powdered vinegar) from King Arthur but the rest was by the book. The texture was exactly right. And for finally helping me achieve that goal, it gets 5 stars.

Wonderful stories about the Hot Bread Kitchen and it's baking family. The bakers share authentic home recipes from Moroccan M'smen (unleavened flatbreads) to filled doughs from Albania and Tibet. Good instructions both in text and image. Baked the New Yorker Rye the other day and loved the look in the eyes of my German father-in-law when he took a bite: "That's the taste of the "Kümmel brod" my mother used to bake!" With so many bread baking books already out there it is hard to come up with an authentic and inspiring book that can compete with the best. But Jessamyn Waldman Rodriguez pulled it off.Highly recommended both for beginners and more seasoned home bakers with other bread books on the shelf.(E.g. Reinhart, Hamelman, Forkish, Robertson, to name a few)

I am really surprised to see so many positive reviews. There are major issues with almost all of the recipes in the book. Unless you already know how to make most of the items from previous experience, you will not know how to fix the recipes. In addition, some aren’t fixable at all. THIS IS NOT A BOOK FOR SOMEONE WHO IS NOT AN EXPERIENCED BAKER/COOK.

I bought this book for a friend's birthday and she has loved it. Every time she makes a new recipe, she sends me a photo of her finished bread and a snap of the recipe. I flipped through it before I gave it to her and couldn't find a thing I didn't want to make. I've personally made the naan out of the book, and found it incredibly easy and delicious. I need to buy myself a copy ASAP.

I love this cookbook. With the Internet these days, cookbooks are not as necessary. We just look up recipes each time we need one. But this cookbook is a necessary book for your pantry. It is like a text book because it teaches you about how to think bread: it doesn't just list ingredients. Browsing through the pages is like walking through the countries represented and meeting the chefs. The book explains techniques in a way a newbie breadbaker could understand. It also includes some recipes for sandwiches and other things related to the loaf you are making. As an example, the rye bread recipe adds how to make a Ruben, even including the sauce for the sandwich! I highly recommend this book for your kitchen and as a gift for a friend. They might invite you to share a freshly baked slice of bread. mmmm!

I am an avid bread baker and have made many of the breads in this book, but have found the recipes to be easy to follow and some with different techniques than what I am familiar with good results. I like the accompanying recipes to go along with the breads and the stories even better. There is enough variety to keep you interested and and none are too challenging that even a beginner should have great success here. For me it is interesting to read the stories of these breads and the places where they are from and how they are a part of the makers life. The stories make the texture of this book just as interesting to me as enjoying a fresh hot bread.

This is fairytale-ish in a way. I enjoyed the story with the sisters Georgina and Mary, I feel like the world building could maybe have been more fleshed out and explained. The magic was quaint until the end. I will say I wasn’t surprised by anything, I knew where it was heading before it got there and I’ll give you a trigger warning for sexual assault. I don’t know, it was good but mostly just average.

You know how when you finish a book you loved and you close it and then just want to hug it and cry? No, just me? Well that is me right now, and that has been me with every book Katrina has written! I loved it. I loved it SO MUCH.

I found this book today and instantly fell in love with it. The characters are so mesmerising and I just couldn't put it down. Keep up the good work!

I loved the quirky and unique setting of By-the-Sea. It really felt alive. And I loved the unique and specific powers that the Fernweh women possessed and the matter-of-fact nature of their magic. And the legacy of Annabella the bird.So Georgina’s romance with Prue, who’s tagging along with her brother for bird watching, is all kinds of adorable. The are just so pure and cute and make me really smiley.Summer of Salt is just filled with so much family and sisters and love and support and I couldn’t get enough. The Fernweh women were a great, eclectic group that truly love and support each other beyond anything else.You always know you’ll get fantastic quotes with magical realism books:“On By-the-Sea, you and me will go sailing by. On waves of green, softly singing too. On By-the-Sea, you and me will be forever young. And live together on waves of blue.”“The dead loved promises; the living loved promising.”Things I Didn’t LikeI loved that is was such an easy book to read, but it went by so quickly! I don’t know if the atmospheric nature of the story kept me from really getting hooked in, but I never felt fully invested. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed it but I wasn’t in it.This was the perfect rainy day summer book. I absolutely flew threw the pages, but I don’t think I’ll be forgetting the story anytime soon. Summer of Salt is an impactful story of magic and healing.

You know when you start a book one day, and you get at least 10% into it and then you put it down for a day or two and you say you'll take your time with it and not binge read but then you pick it up again and then you find yourself Commited? Yeah that's what happened again. I truthfully didn't mean to stay up reading this late and finishing this book, but Summer of Salt was nothing like I was expecting and yet it was better than I expected it to be in places that I wasn't sure how to make sense of.I didn't know that this was going to be a wlw book, because I thought the girls on the cover were the sisters and so I was ecstatic to find out that Georgina was a lesbian and Prue was bi, because no one is really talking about this book and I think that they need to be because while it doesn't focus much on their romantic relationship they were still important and very sweet to see together. I loved their dynamic and everything they did truthfully.The magic in this world was the sort of magic that I sort of aspire for? The sort of casualty that you know something is going on, but you either don't want to ask or you know better than to ask what's going on because that's just how all of this works and that's that. I had to say, I called Georgie's Thing way early and I sat through the whole book waiting for the ball to drop in the most dramatic way and I got that.My only concern is that I can't easily reccomend this to anyone, because while I feel like it does handle what happened to Mary very well and I'm So Glad that her side won in the end it should have more of a sexual assault warning for some people who have stronger sensitivities. I have a deep respect for Leno for also acknowledging the number of men who are assaulted, that was more than a lot of people like to do and I feel that this book deserves so much more love and attention.I borrowed this from my public library, but if given the chance I am 1000% buying this for my book collection at home.

I'm sure he wasn't expecting any kickback in the process ... no, not from a wall street hedge fund manager, that's not something he'd do. But don't expect any unique titles to hit this list. It's the usual suspects, Eric Ries, Peter Theil ... it'd be like going to a sci-fi conference and recommending Isaac Asimov to everyone ... gee thanks ...The one nice thing about this book (which is why it's a two star review!) is that since the text is so vapid of insight and depth, you can quite literally read it like some top graduate from Evelyn Wood's speed reading course. Don't worry, you're missing anything by going too fast, he'll repeat it again in 5 pages.But really, don't worry about it ... it's like 12 bucks ... won't be the worst 12 bucks you ever spent. Besides, he's not a bad author, the text actually is quite readable and there isn't much New Yorker style needlessly long stories without getting to the point.Not the worst the book I've read this year (and I'm writing this in February) but certainly not 5-star awesome, would read again!!!

I am stunned to read some comments that the book was "too long" or contained "too much information". I was blown away by every aspect of this book and fascinated by the main characters. The courage, dedication, integrity, vision... there are no words to describe how these heros have accomplished what they have managed to do.The dire poverty of Dr. Ruit was instrumental to the plot. The poorest of the poor in the most remote area of the world becomes a doctor and cures tens of thousands of blind, poor inhabitants of the region. Wouldn't you want to know how that happened and what makes him tick?? I did! And Dr. Tabin, a brilliant, kind of rebel and adventure-seeking mountain climbing, Harvard and Yale student is so moved by what he sees, he dedicates his life to the same goal. Again, his background, incredible energy,talent, all filter in to how he becomes the hero he is. I think folks are too used to instant gratification and have lost the ability to focus for more than 10 minutes. Relin's writing is pure poetry as he paints a moving and thoughtful portrait of all concerned. And as far as the controversy with Relin's prior book - it did NOT involve him personally. He was writing a biography and the subject lied and exaggerated certain aspects of himself to Relin. So there was NO shame on Relin's part... he was lied to. Relin's writing is and was, superb.

Sadly enough, my father (a lifelong liberal who wrote about Civil Rights in America) took his own life while I was in the process of reading this book. I felt great sadness knowing David Oliver Relin let the bait of taunters and condemners take him down, and I am praying for him (it's never too late for God since He is the Master of time). I have been tempted by such thoughts in my life but mainly for feeling useless in a world where so many are suffering. My father's name is David, too, and these suicides put it on my heart to pray a lot and change careers when the answer came: back to nursing school! Yes, with God all things are possible and it's never too late. I am grateful that this book fell into my hands at the right time. The night is darkest before the dawn, my friends. There are so many people, and many whom I have lately surrounded myself with, who proudly wear religious labels (oh, I've done it, too, but oh how empty are words and theology). Although we are not saved by works, it is abundantly clear when some men have God in their hearts and are inspired to help "the least of these" because of that. Geoff Tabin and Sanduk Ruit are two men inspired by the two commandments on which the others "hang," in my humble opinion. Those who have a heart for the "least of these," God will have a heart for, too. Bless you both and all who help in your endeavors, and maybe when I have my nursing degree, I'll be on the front lines with you, fighting to cure all curable and preventable blindness!!

These very real doctors and their teams eliminate blindness in remote locations by thinking outside of the box. Whenever there is a problem, they find a creative solution. My husband told someone yesterday that I talked about this book a lot for at least six weeks after finishing it. Everyone should understand how we can emancipate over a hundred million people in the world from crippling, but curable, blindness. Very readable. Full of amazing details.

Having recently undergone cataract surgery, I was surfing the internet for a charity that performs these amazing operations, when I came across the Himalayan Cataract Project. That led me to this wonderful book. Dr. Sanduk Ruit, born on the wrong side of the tracks in Nepal (where caste matters), decided to go to medical school after several of his young siblings died needless deaths. He went on to become one of the preeminent ophthalmologists in the world. If he shouldn't get the Nobel prize in medicine, I don't know who should. There are millions of poor people who have cataract blindness and could be cured with an operation that takes 10 minutes. He and his partner, Dr. Geoff Tabin of the U.S., care deeply about that, and have made it their life's work to bring cataract surgery to as many people as possible in Asia and Africa. Just as importantly, the Himalayan Cataract Project trains doctors from all over the world to spread their knowledge. What an uplifting, inspiring book. There really are some wonderful, amazing people in the world, people whose only dream is help others. I can't put this book down, and will be sorry when it ends.

This is an amazing narrative about two physicians from vastly different backgrounds who came together with a common purpose of bringing eye care to those populations living in regions with the highest levels of blindness or various other eye problems exacerbated by impoverishment. What is truly remarkable is the way in which these gifted doctors could identify technologies and treatment strategies that have been proven to rival the best methods used in affluent countries. It gives one pause to think what could be done worldwide if our focus would be on healing and prevention rather than on profit. Another valuable insight is the way in which they inspire other doctors to replicate their methods and to join their endeavor along with seeking donors who could demonstrably see the results of this approach so that many thousands of people living in Asia and Africa will benefit from life-changing treatment.

This book is truly amazing, and the fact that it is non-fiction...it is real....makes it astonishing. The author does a terrific job of tracking these two physicians from diametrically opposite backgrounds (one Nepalese and one American) from their childhoods, thru their meeting, and then follows them as they literally change the world, the 3rd World, with respect to eyecare, (and specifically curing blindness). This book is touching and amazing on so many levels.

An engaging story of two incredible physicians. As a physician, I'm living and working in Nepal. Knowing of the challenges of working in this country, this book inspires me all the more to relentlessly seek ones dreams no matter the barrier. Relin was such a talented writer! It's sad to learn of his tragic death.

My teacher at UCLA uses this as a textbook for his class. He says it's the best book on the subject and I couldn't agree more. It says everything you need to know about this business, and it's very easy to understand, even for people who have never worked in the industry.

It's so hard to find books about the music business these days that are not out of date, but this book is the best one that I have read so far. It tells you about the industry from an artists' perspective and from the business perspective, while also providing a road map of how to be successful in the concert industry. I really enjoyed this book and will keep it for future reference later in my career and life.

The book does a nice job giving you the basics of concert promotion. It was more cool to me as I knew and one third of the people mentioned and quoted in the book. The information stayed very simple and easy to understand for a beginner. I am thinking there are a lot of experienced road warriors who wouldn't know ALL the details of the choreography that goes into putting on a daily show.

Interesting book for someone that wants to think about concert promotion. Gave it to my son and he said it is very insightful.

I got this book as a gift for my wife, on the recommendation of a friend, a brilliant and devoutly Catholic philosopher. It is indeed a wonderful book, filled with truly striking and inspirational information about mystical elements of the Holy Faith.

Take the time, long but so rewarding.

Before reading this book I could only imagine what life was like for the most humble, yet greatest woman that ever walked the earth. This is my second reading of this work. If you've ever wondered why the Catholics hold Jesus' mother Mary in such high esteem, this book shows you why.

Very reverent treatment of the Blessed Mother's early life

Venerable Mary of Agreda received some of the most increditable visions I feel like I have learned a great deal about the Holy Trinity, Mother Mary. Heaven has a plan and the more you read and learn the more faith you have. Amen

If you ever wondered about the life of Mary, mother of our Lord, Jesus Christ, this abridgement will give you an insiders look.at her life. I can imagine getting all the volumes would hard to get through because of the length. This was perfect and easily read for 15 to 20 minutes at a time and fulfilled the role of spiritual reading very well. Very enlightening.

A must read for all catholics. This book is on the same tier as St. Catherine's Dialogue! Who can resist the words of Our Lord, or in this case the Immaculate Mother of God, given to his great saints! There are so many treasures in this book! For example, the meaning of the gifts of the wisemen, the meaning of the novena, magnificat, the ox, etc. This book makes some Holy Scripture FAR more understandable and meaningful.Thanks be to Jesus for his infinite gifts! This is certainly another!Blessed be the day of the triumph of Mary's Immaculate Heart!
