Great book for small children, very easy to understand for small children. Great for preparation for kids when parents travel because of work

Great book for those with families where daddy does some traveling. Our daughter likes to read this book with her dad before he goes, and then wants to read it each day that he's away. Very sweet!

My son has sensory issues and needs more visuals and simple words to help understand what is happening. This was a fabulous tool that we use when his daddy travels. It also gave me the idea to create a visual calendar of each day and events that will lead to his return. :)

My husband was going away on a business trip and we wanted a book to help explain this to our 19 month old boy. This was the perfect book, he really liked it, and wanted to read it many times when his daddy was away. It's very easy to read, not much needless explanation. It's right to the point. Now that he has returned he doesn't read it as much, but was a life saver during the process.

I babysit frequently for a little boy (2 years old) whose father travels overseas for months at a time and then returns for a couple of days. While he's a bright and well-adjusted little guy, I can tell that he does have questions about his dad's absence. I saw this book in the library once and read it to him. Overall, he loved this book and requested to read it multiple times. The picture flaps were a great idea. It helped him understand what Dad does whenever he isn't home such as what he eats, where he sleeps, who he meets, how does he get there, etc. I think children often have questions like these but may not necessarily know how to articulate it. I am appreciative of the fact that this book pays attention to that. One suggestion I'd have is to use this book as companion with a children's atlas or map, and children can physically see where the absent parent is. Overall, this is a great book and has been very helpful for this family.

Great book for families with a "road warrior" Daddy. The children are sad to see Daddy leave, but figure out lots of ways to communicate with him (email, phone calls, reading a homemade book the Daddy wrote, making a calendar of events) and keep busy until his return.

Axel Bruns coins a new term to describe all those involved in innovative new methods of internet-based production--produsers--the most succinct definition of which may be "productive users." It's a useful term, simply indicating that often in the new media, producers are also users and vice versa. Some of his examples include Wikipedia, Everquest, Second Life, and of course, one of the most famous products that is completely open source and user-produced--Linux.Bruns offers a useful summary of the core characteristics of produsage early in the book, and then re-visits these core characteristics in each chapter. I found this immensely helpful. I basically memorized the core characteristics, and then was able to predict almost in advance how the characteristics functioned in the media or product/artefact under consideration.Towards the end of the book, Bruns even offers a description of how produsage might function in relation to politics, thus indicating that this is a cultural shift and not simply a technological change in the means of production. Taking his cue, and for the sake of this essay, which is striving to bring these media and cultural texts into conversation with current understandings of the church, I list them but then interline thoughts on how they might function (or are already functioning) in the life of the church:1) Open participation, communal evaluation: Participation in produsage must be invited from as wide a range of produsers as possible (Wikipedia is an excellent example of accomplishing this) because this increases the overall quality of the artefact or product. The same community who participates is also involved in the evaluation. "This holoptic model of communal evaluation in produsage, in which each contributor is able to see and evaluate everyone else's contributions, also acts as a driver for a continuing process of socialization of participants into the community ethos. In a church context, this might mean that potential learners in adult education would participate in the planning process and selection of study material, and then evaluate later how they as a group did at selecting study material that helped the group grow in faith, knowledge, etc. I happen to think church leadership seldom does this in most contexts, but I do not have statistical evidence to back that up. Furthermore, I find it intriguing to ponder what it would look like to produse sermons through open participation and communal evaluation.2) Fluid heterarchy, ad hoc meritocracy: Leaders in the system hold that role through the quality of what they produse. No hierarchy is needed to elect people to positions of authority. Instead of a bureaucracy, you find an ad-hocracy (Toffler). I find this concept to hold incredible promise, and I already see how it works on the ground. In almost every congregation I have served, some of the most significant ministries that were happening simply happened, and the congregation celebrated them because individuals had a passion and gift for them. Often, the elected bureaucratic machine, such as a church council, actually played a less important overall role in the economy and work of the congregation. Teams address needs as they arise, or as gifts are called out. This is called the principal of equipotentiality. I wonder, for example, if a fluid church in a produsage era even needs an elected council or board?3) Unfinished artefacts, continuing process: Brian Eno suggests that we "think of cultural products, or art works, or the people who use them even, as being unfinished. Permanently unfinished. We come from a cultural heritage that says things have a `nature,' and that this nature is fixed and describable. We find more and more thatn this idea is insupportable--the `nature' of something is not by any means singular, and depends on where and when you find it, and what you want it for."[1] This principle would introduce more grace and flexibility into churches. Things we do together in church are experiments, unfinished artifacts, as are we ourselves. I am in the continuing process of being finished by my relationship with you, and vice versa, and in God we anticipate the completion of this process, but only at the parousia. This is a thoroughly eschatological, and we can thank Bruns for pointing out how to think about it in terms of organizations and produsage.4) Common property, individual rewards: I think this quote describes the key leaders of many congregations I have been a part of, "Innovative, commited and networked amateurs working to professional standards."[2] Bruns is at pains to distinguish this phenomenon from another one, sometimes called "prosumers." Prosumers are professional at their consumption. High-end audiophiles may be an example. Often the character of this group, who hold the property in common with others but receive individual rewards (prestige, etc.), is described in some unsatisfactory terms, such as nerds, geeks, enthusiasts, or hackers. In the church context, I see this most often happen when people simply give to the common good of the congregation, and take pride in the success of the congregational ministries. However, it is not insignificant to figure out how rewards for individuals happen in congregations, and to ensure that systems are in place to be clear about produsage in congregations as common property.If you are short on time (this is a long book), I strongly recommend reading at least up through chapter six, the final chapter on Wikipedia. I was simply amazed and staggered by how Wikipedia works. I actually have always trusted Wikipedia for what it is. "By contrast with traditional encyclopedias, which seek to present the current state of knowledge about the world--Wikipedia presents the currently prevalent representations of knowledge about the world.[3] This is an epistemological distinction with hermeneutical consequences.This, together with the fact that Wikipedia is a palimpsest where you can always view the history of the development of the document you are reading (a fact not known to all users of Wikipedia), makes me trust the information I gather from it more than other web sites, and to a certain degree, even from an encyclopedia. I have not expected Wikipedia to be an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is a wiki. Both are beautiful and interesting in their own right, if read for the genre they truly are. It is Bruns' great contribution to the cause to have analyzed thoroughly precisely what is innovative and important about Wikipedia and other prodused artefacts.[1][...][2] 29.[3] 114.

I read this book as part of my graduate studies in communication at the University of Utah. I stumbled upon the author, but when I read this book, I knew I was on to something.Bruns covers a lot of ground in this book, providing a good overview of the current state of online information production. The book focuses on collaborative information production and how this is disrupting "industrial" forms of content creation. Anyone familiar with Bruns' previous book, "Gatewatching," will find this book to be an excellent extension of that work.Bruns' key discussion in "Blogs, Wikipedia, Second Life, and Beyond" is how the audience has moved from users to "produsers," a term he coined. Scholars and general observers alike will find his analysis helpful and well written. Most of the book is composed of insightful case studies. It's definitely worth a look.

Although Bruns does a good job of covering the topic of social media in the current world's context, the book is overwritten and boring. Further, Bruns' need to use his own terminology in the book is cumbersome, as the intent often seems to make his new words more mainstream, rather than actually getting his message across.If this book had not been required reading for a graduate course, I would have stopped reading after about 50 pages.

Well-organized and thought provoking. Although it is a little beefy for a casual reader, it is still a substantial collection of one of the most insightful critical philosophers of the world. If you want to read Marx, I'd highly recommend this.

My daughter needed this for school on came in just as you see it and fast

Not a favorite of mine; however, this book was an essential for a college course.

Marx is well explained in this book, his view is more important today than ever, the rule of the capitalist elite and the future of work for the disenfranchised is approaching the crossroads that Marx envisioned. The only point not included, was the role of the consumer, which is one connection that is as important as the role of worker and exploiter, Capitalists need consumers, even if the worker is largely displaced by robots. Seen more clearly today is the role of the taxpayer, domestic borrower, and consumer, as the basis of all wealth for capitaist exploitation, to extent that these three classes of worker may lose everthing to the capitalist who also creates the medium of exchange backed only by law.

Karl Marx is absolutely brilliant concerning his approach to peasant revolution. Such examples of his brilliance is China, Russia, Southeast Asia, and Cuba. Marx understood the importance of the proletarian's existence in the social order and food chain. In these selected writings, Marx discusses the manipulation of the proletarian by the bourgeois social class, the importance of a collectivist society, the failures of capitalism, the advantages of socialism, etc... Ultimately, Marx states that, with the exception of China, capitalism will evolve into perfect communism. He also states on page 175 10 characteristic of a capitalistic society evolving into communism: 1)abolition of land property and rent, 2)a progressive income tax, 3)abolition of all inheritance, 4)confiscation of property, 5)centralization of credit into the state, 6)centralization of communication, 7)state-owned businesses, 8)equal liability to all labor, 9)abolition of difference between town and country, and 10)free education in public schools. This book is an excellent edition to any student of political philosophy.

Book was in great condition when I received it. Needed this specific edition for a course.However, the content hasn't changed at all from my other edition (this is a joke...), it still sucks. Glad Marx could sit in a library and preach to everyone else, while never actually experiencing anything that he spoke on.As a person who studies logic I can attest that anyone who studies, or just loves, logic and has never read this book will hate it. It is full of fallacious arguments, I mean my God!But who knows, communism and Marx are the best thing since sliced bread nowadays, so I may be wrong in thinking fellow lovers of logic will hate it.

Grabbed this book after watching movie several times, actually this is one of my favorite movies. Was surprised to find that book lacked a lot of color and expression compared to the movie, and the plot is much simpler. I know it is rarely the case with screen adaptations, but don’t waste time and money on the book, better watch the movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It is an exquisite, genius blend of metaphysical knowledge into what we're told is a fiction story. I'm not ashamed to admit that I wept with joy and sorrow through much of the first third of the book, especially Chris's death at the very beginning.I thought the entire book resonated quite well with my own belief system, which has been aquired from many books on mysticism, spiritualism, and metaphysics in general.While I speak about the ending in the sentences that follow, I will attempt to not put out any spoilers and try to speak about things in broad, general terms. I was very disappointed and upset by the ending of this book. More than disappointed, angry, enraged. Upon reflection I felt that the ending was a complete contradiction of the principles established in the first third of the book. It felt like an immoral and contradictory conclusion to an otherwise flawless masterpiece. The ending for me was nothing more than dogma. Having read it, I understand now why the movie's creators were so conflicted about how the story should end, but I believe that the movie got it right here and the book, wrong. I prefer the book to the movie's everything else for the most part though.And the following paragraphs DO CONTAIN SPOILERS...As a hopeless, head over heals romantic, I more than identified with the story. It felt like I was reading a real account of the afterlife from a real person.The ending felt as hollow as Ann did in hell. It felt like a punishment, not like a balancing of the scales. And I do not accept the idea of karma as described by the author. The idea of karma ends when a soul realizes, learns, accepts, and repents the wrong of their actions, no further action is required. Why would there be? If the requisite knowledge becomes a part of the soul, it does not need to be learned again through some forced action of retribution. There is no karma as retribution. Karma is a tool to teach, empathy, compassion, patience, and so on. Not a tool of punishment. I do not believe that a soul would ever be forced to be reborn, first, without their own choice in the matter, and, second, with any handicap or ailment that soul hasn't specifically selected for itself for it's personal growth, no matter what its past life deeds. And I do not accept that any person so brought to the pit of despair to commit suicide will have any conclusion forced on them as a result of leaving the earthly plane before their scheduled departure. As the book establishes, reality for any soul is a result of that soul's thoughts, this is as true for a soul that has been taken naturally or one that takes itself through suicide.It is also unacceptable that the hall of records would not have known about this potential suicide. Each thought is a chain, one leads to the next, the examiners there would have certainly known of Ann's plan to take her own life, especially at that moment of her intense suffering and despair on earth. She would have been surrounded by guides and helpers to help her at the moment of her crossing to attempt to prevent her from sinking into the turmoil of hell.The ending was completely unacceptable to me. So much so that I feel that every single copy of this book should be recalled and the ending rewritten completely. Keeping two souls, who love and are devoted to each other so completly, apart from each other after so much anguish and despair and toiling just feels cruel and way over the top. Even if they were eventually brought together in a new life. What about their children? Wouldn't they like to see their parents in the great hereafter after /their/ heartache? It makes no sense. I do not accept (at least in the context of this story) that rebirth could possibly take place so quickly.Furthermore, if a soul's thoughts and will create their own reality, how can it be said that Ann must be reborn immediately? No one would possibly choose such a path after that experience.I have other issues with the story here and there. The concept of a soul's ultimate goal being to be reunited with God is written about an awful lot. Personally, I believe we all already reunited with God since we all contain the essence of God already, as does everything around us. So, what would be the point? I can imagine no greater boredom than becoming little more than a fixture. Perhaps there is more to it that my tiny, feeble mind does not yet understand. But this thought goes to my greater point, life, afterlife, whatever, is what God does to keep eternity interesting.The book was so much more detailed, expansive. I hated that the movie dumbed down so much, introduced unnecessary characters, and added far more drama and grief to a story that already had more than enough grief. This is just Hollywood making things more dramatic than necessary.

As another reviewer mentioned, this book is great if you want to watch over your contractor and have an understanding of the work that they're doing.This book is not for a DIY'er. Not because it's an overly-complex topic, but because the topics covered are jobs that you'll want to hire a contractor for (pouring a basement foundation, repairing structural failures).In my case, I want to pour a foundation for a backyard BBQ. Super-simple, and you'd think this book would be ideal. Nope! In reality, and I wish I'd seen this at the start - this book is just a collection of articles from a magazine written by different authors. Sure, they might be pros, but this book is not subject specific. Instead it tries to cover as many high-level points in the world of Foundations & Concrete Work. This very well could be what you're looking for, but if instead you're looking for a step-by-step best-practices guide for how to do a reasonable job yourself, look elsewhere.

This book should be called "Foundations & Concrete Work For Pros and By Pros to Make Sure You Spend $20,000". No mention of strip or trench concrete foundations? What??? No mention of putting in bolts to hold down sill plates? Huh????Everything in this book is laid out so you would have to give a contractor tens of thousands of dollars to have even a simple footing put in. What about the owner/builder or just someone trying to save some money?How can these people call themselves "Pros"? No mention of plumbing when putting in a foundation? How can you explain to someone how to put in a slab-on-grade and not mention plumbing? You can't have one without the other. I was looking for a LOT more than this book which basically says put concrete in expensive forms and smooth it out. From the editors of Fine Homebuilding??? I wouldn't trust these morons to build a doghouse.

Just a list of articles put together into a book. This won't tell you how to work with concrete.

Very detailed and helpful book. Even if you're not a DIY-er, this will help you understand the process and ensure your contractor is not taking "shortcuts" that could impair the quality of your foundation job.

After reading this book, I knew everything a DIYr should. In my case, I learned it was too much work and I hired a pro. You can tell if your pro is doing it right without the back breaking work.If you are young enough and good shape, you will learn what you have to do. If older like me, you will learn what you don't want to do.Good luck on your project.

Very well written so that the lay person can understand. This is a must if you are building a new foundation for any building.

This book is a great guide for DIY to contractors who don't build forms and pour concrete as every week.
