In this seminal and ambitious book, professor EO Wilson works to show the need and lays the foundation for the integration of the sciences and the humanities -- a principle he calls consilience. Wilson sees the soloed nature of knowledge as an error of modern and postmodern academic institutions. Then this Harvard professor points the way toward a more holistic view. It is gratifying to see this vision come alive in books such as The Happiness Hypothesis and the works of Malcolm Gladwell, as well as many progressive organizations and insitutions.Wilson sees four major areas of study that need to be integrated: (1) Environmental Policy; (2) Ethics; (3) Social Science; (4) Biology. He makes the case for a return to valuing empirical scientific research as a key to this integration, and he sees postmodern relativism as the primary threat. He defines science as " the organized systematic enterprise that gathers knowledge about the world and condense the knowledge into testable laws and principles."He further says "the love of complexity without reductionism makes art; the love of complexity with reductionism makes science;" and additionally, Wilson says "science needs the intuition and metaphorical power of the arts, and the arts need the fresh blood of science." Despite his loathing of postmodern relativism he sees the need for criticism by stating that "new ideas are commonplace, and almost always wrong." Neither is Wilson a blind advocate for science, and he states clearly that new scientific discoveries lead to new challenges. Thus the need for an interplay between art and science.Wilson sees original scientific discovery as a key to progress, and he celebrates researchers who venture out (for the chances of success are always slim). The qualities he sees as necessary for this journey include the possession of great knowledge and the courage to follow obsessive quests. Within this voyage of discovery, Wilson points to the study of complex systems as the most important focus and pressing need. The social sciences are more complex than the physical sciences according to Wilson, and he laments the lack of interaction by these two camps. Then he goes on for a good bit to criticize sociologists, with good reason. Economists also draw his fire for arrogance and overly simplistic models that, for example, considers the natural environment as an "externality" to an economic system. What Wilson does see the need for models that are simple, widely applicable, congruent with other disciplines, and predictive. This review just scratches the surface of the awesome book. Throughout the pages EO Wilson expounds on observations, hypotheses, theories and laws that cover both the sciences and the humanities. And he closes the book with an impassioned plea to work toward solutions to limit the destruction of our natural environment. The principles of consilience are applicable across most organizations and disciplines. In my work as a marketing consultant I see soloed specialties separated by the competition for capital, budgets and status. I hear this familiar lament from colleagues in other disciplines and human endeavors. EO Wilson points the way toward a better, a more consilient, future.Consilience is a watershed book and provocative read. A singular achievement.Outliers: The Story of SuccessThe Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom

Consilience, a book by biologist Edward O. Wilson, is a masterful narrative of an amazing width of topics: science history, biology, Brain Sciences, Ecology, even an eloquant crticism of Post Modernism. In this book, Wilson proved himself one of the greatest writers of Popular science - lucid, clear, and often funny. But Consilience is more than just a popular science book. It is a call for a new kind of science - a unified discipline, a thread of knowledge leading from physics, through the key element of biological evolution, to the social sciences and even the humanities, art, religion, and the ecology. In a sense, Consilience is very similar to Daniel Dennet's Darwin's Dangerous Idea. Both books deal with a huge array of items, also categorized as a chain leading from Physics to Ethics (and, in Dennet's case to God - or to the inexsistence of God. Wilson, more modest, stops at religion, and leaves a place for some sort of a deity in his cosmology). Ultimately, although Wilson's prose is superior, and some of his ideas are wonderful (especially early in the book. I loved the suggestion that Logical Positivism can be saved through biological information on how the brain works. There is a paradox there, but it is an approach to the question I never considered), Dennet's book is more considered and is the better of the two.The reason for that is, as a scientific program, rather than as an ideology, Consilience doesn't hold water. First, the term is incredibly unclear. Sometimes, in its strong form, Consilience really is a call for one science, explaining a phenomena in all levels, from the human action to the evolutionary explanation for this phenomena, and finally to the physics behind the biology. But one is struck by how little Wilson actually explains through this. His examples are remarkably minor. He can trace dreaming about Snakes to old world primates innate fear, and he explains which color words will be more frequant then others (black and white tend to be higher up the hirarchy then Orange - hmm), but no explanation to any discrete historical event is ever offered. Does Consilience, in this strong regard, has anything to say about Keyensian economics? Can you trace the fall of the Weimar republic back to physics? Do we understand Hitchcock's movies better through an evolutionary perspective on human motives like greed and love? I don't think so.Then, sometimes consilience means only that different disciplines should engage in dialogue. There's nothing objectionable in that, but it is far from tearing down the discipline barriers. And it is constantly done anyway - the latest winner of the Noble price in economics won it for work in psychology.Wilson's Consilience keeps switching between these two extremes. Part of the problem, in my view, is that Wilson over emphasizes the links between the different levels of explanation. In particular, in the 'nature vs. nurture', debate, Wilson clearly believes everything is in the genes.Wilson constantly denies that he believes in genetic determinism. Strictly speaking, that is true, but if Wilson closes a door by allowing for culture, he opens a window by talking about predisposition - human culture works based on preexisting biological directions ("epigenetic rules") - it intensifies and elaborates them, but rarely or never ignores them. That's an interesting twist, but it amounts to little but a longer road to the same destination.Ultimately, the greatest problem I had with Consilience is that it isn't pragmatic. Yes, Unity is a wonderful thing (and despite my reservations, I tend to agree to that), but how do we get there? Wilson offers very little concrete steps. At the end, Consilience leaves you with a vivid description of the impending ecologic crisis, and a warm fuzzy feeling that consilience can solve it - but with very little about how consilience will be achieved, or indeed, what it means exactly.I don't want to end my review in such a sour note. Wilson's prose is powerful, and he is a fascinating thinker. Even if I don't agree with him, the vision is provocative and fascinating, and in a sense, that is the greatest compliment possible.

The purpose of this book is to explore the possibilities of synthesis of the various branches of study from the "hard sciences" to the arts. As can be imagined, this is a daunting task, but Wilson makes real progress in this book. We live in a complicated world, but Wilson makes a wonderful case for the ability of the human mind to make sense of it. He is at his best when he discusses the failure of the ideals of the Enlightenment, brain chemistry and the genetic connection to culture. He is less successful in connecting the natural sciences model to artistic expression. This book is a thought-provoking read and is challenging, but these are important ideas and worth devoting time and attention to exploring them. Wilson is a man of both depth and breadth of intellect and is courageous enough to use those talents to attempt to discover the possibilities of connecting our theories of various disciplines. Sure, it's speculative, but it is also amazing the power that he brings to his argument that the various areas of human understanding can be subjected to universal principles of understanding.Highly recommended!

A truly remarkable scientific and philosophic analysis of the relation of science to the humanities, of individuals to society, and the combination of both to the future of humanity and everything on our planet. Plan on spending a lot of time thinking about what Wilson presents in this book. Then when you're finished, pick up Keith Sewell's "Leaving Truth" to further stretch your perceived ideas about Knowledge.

I almost didn't purchase this book because of some of the awful reviews I read. I questioned whether I wanted to waste my time and money on something that some reviewers claimed advocates child abuse. So I began with the free sample, was pleased and decided to purchase it. After reading this book in it's entirety I am absolutely shocked at some of the awful things people wrote about this author! Dobson's advice is far from abusive and I worry about a society so permissive that it would label it as such. He stresses the importance of protecting the spirit of the child while helping to control the will. He warns against discipline that is demeaning or done in anger. He gives advice for creating a home filled with love and how to discipline a difficult child while making it evident to the child that they are loved, special, and cared for. Dobson stresses the importance if finding a balance between a household that is too harsh and too permissive as both ends of the spectrum can be harmful to a child. He does advocate swatting a child on the behind one or two times for clear acts of defiance and only after other measures have failed. He writes that spankings should be rare, never done in anger, and always followed by holding the child and lovingly telling them what they did wrong and assuring them that they are loved. However, if you disagree with spanking this book can still be beneficial to you. It is filled with an abundance of helpful information, most of which has nothing to do with spanking. Read it and take away what is useful for your situation and toss what isn't. If you have a strong willed child then I think you'll find it very beneficial!

Great book to understand your children in general, even if your child is not particularly a strong-willed child. Personally I applied Dr. Dobson's advice to my 2 and half year old girl and so far I have seen positive changes and results. We became closer, and she now shows more affection as well as respect to her parents. Would recommend to other parents who have toddlers.

This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. If you are not a Christian you may not agree with or understand a good part of the book, but it is based on scripture. It can help anyone though!

This book makes me so angry. I wish I could give this 0 stars. Advocates spanking your child. I now have to figure out how to get rid of this awful book. Don’t buy this!!!

The "New Strong Willed Child" is like "The Art of War" for handling strong headed children. After I've read this book, I am prepared, like General McCarthy going into battle - to defeat my strong-willed child at every turn and turn him into a weak-willed noodle who will never question my authority. This book will teach you to subdue the willpower of your child - it is clear that many children feel entitled to their own thoughts and opinions which is just not right. These days, there are too many leaders and not enough followers, and this book is the bible for techniques to use to crush your child's dreams and spirit and turn them into a timid sheep.Only issue is that I had already implemented the techniques from the "Old" Strong Willed Child and I had to learn a completely new system, but I was able to learn it in no time.

Wish I could follow the advice in this book, without risking CPS removing the child from the home. I was raised this way and it was very effective, and I was a compliant child. This book was written in the 70's, or thereabout, I believe. Times have changed. If your child tells a teacher that spankings are going on in your home, they will send someone out to investigate, especially if your chid shows signs of disrespect and defiance. It is already obvious, that for whatever reason, you have a child that causes problems.

I had a high needs baby who is now a high needs toddler. He’s different from my older two children and is extremely strong willed. His tantrums are epic! Reading this helped me understand my little guy better and the suggestions on how to parent/discipline these kiddos is working. Both my son and I are more joyful and cry a lot less with each passing day! ;) I’m so thankful Dr. Dobson wrote this book!

Get this book... Great read for parents! It was so helpful! I actually read it, then made my husband read it, then read it again! Some good tools to use to apply to strong willed kids!!

I've looked up a lot of resources on the net. You can do so many things for free on your own, don't pay the services on the web to do it for you. This book will help a lot. I've found answers to all of my questions here, in simple plain English:Naming your businessTrademarks/servicemarksPricing your work or goodsTaxation (including some great ways to save money on your taxes)Web domain registrationChoosing the type of business you want to own (sole proprietorship, LLC, etc.)Web sites and e-businessLocation (working from home, leasing a commercial site, etc.)Writing contractsHiring workers if you choose toChanging ownership in the futureMarketingAnd a lot more...The book also includes many of the legal forms you will need both in tear-out page form and on a CD-ROM so you can print out more copies on your computer. This book is easy to follow and thorough. I highly recommend it.

If you already had knowledge about corporate law or business organization, this book might not be for you. However, if you are new business world and want a quick useful basic summary about how to start business organization, this is definitely for you. It has lots of useful tip and suggestion.

This book is great. It covers everything that you need in order to start a business. However, I did note that each section is a bit abbreviated and I am left asking questions after each section. For more specific information regarding business entity and business plans you may be better off getting a book that is solely on the topic. With that being said, it is still a great resource and provides you will all of the forms you may need in order to get your start-up rolling. I would purchase it again.

I checked this out from the local library before buying to make sure that I liked it. I did. Covers all the basics for starting a small business. It’s a great reference for educating yourself. Of course NOLO offers tons more references.

If you are trying to start a business this is a must have book.

This book focuses on the legal issues: you will need other books or resources to help you figure out what kind of business you want, what your products should be, etc. That said, this guide touches on just about every kind of legal issue your small business may come across. Its good to understand these things before you talk to a lawyer, because you may not even know what to ask until you read this book. There were several sections that were not applicable to my situation, however, the book is still a great reference.

I owned this book previously when starting my production company, and it was an invaluable resource. I am launching a new company, and couldn't find my original copy, so ordered this one, my second copy.

Does a good job of giving you the basic tools to begin. It is always asking you to purchase other books that go into greater depth on subjects it discusses. Too sales-pitchy for my taste.

While nowadays labeled as Book 4 in the "Legend of Drizzt" series under the many-authored shared universe of the Forgotten Realms (itself one of a number of campaign settings for the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game, and a popular choice for videogames of a few genres), this particular entry, The Crystal Shard, was originally released in 1988 as R.A. Salvatore's first published work, and the first volume in the "Icewind Dale Trilogy," a slightly misleading series name since this is the only book of the three set in the region of Icewind Dale. It's worth noting that while this book provides a lot of world-building for that part of the Forgotten Realms, there's also no direct story connection between the Icewind Dale Trilogy and the PC roleplaying games released under the name Icewind Dale--they simply take place in the same area within of the campaign setting. The Crystal Shard, set against the many Forgotten Realms novels that exist nowadays, is easy to consider inferior to many of its brother and sister works. Before picking this one up, it's worth knowing that at the time of its publication, the Forgotten Realms setting itself was very new as a D&D product line, the first game products being released in '87, the year before. Together with Douglas Niles's "Darkwalker on Moonshae," this book is a pure example of an entry point. Together with the following two works in the trilogy, "Streams of Silver" and "The Halfling's Gem," this book thus focuses on three elements:- An endearing and eccentric cast of heroes to familiarize the reader into with the archetypal Dungeons & Dungeons adventurer's ensemble- Establishing the region of the Forgotten Realms in which the story takes place, to be give both readers and D&D players a feel for the universe this and other stories would take place in- Setting the norms by which the Forgotten Realms label would be judged, in other words, the standards of its brand of fantasy adventure. As such, The Crystal Shard is characterized by its adherence to the basics. The principle characters are an elf, a dwarf, and a man. The villain is a vain, bumbling wizard who stumbles upon an ageless, evil artifact of great power and sentience (the eponymous Crystal Shard). The chief threat to the safety of the region arrives in the form of a legion of goblins, orcs, lesser giants, and trolls which serve this evil wizard. Throughout the adventure, the action-packed tempo is kept moving from beginning to end, starting with the first act's preliminary war with the unified barbarian tribes of Icewind Dale, a shorter peril which runs parallel to the slower introduction and development of Akar Kessell, the wizard who finds the Shard. And over the course of the story, both a demon and a dragon stand as adversaries for the story's two chief protagonists. Magical trinkets and weapons are forged and found, and though the story splits off to follow several characters on their different paths through the adventure--much as J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" did on a larger scale--the story never deviates from the tried and tested basics of what makes a fantasy adventure feel magical. In that sense The Crystal Shard is simply an example of good, old-school fantasy fun.The major story hook of this novel that sets it apart from other novels of its type released around the same time is its main character, who at this point requires no introduction. Drizzt Do'Urden, a heroic ranger of the "dark elf" sub-race which at the time was considered universally evil in D&D, does not dominate the adventure as an almighty invincible swordsman as he would come to in some later novels, nor does he weigh the story down with undue focus on his own troubled life as a drow who has forsaken his heritage. It is in this novel that Drizzt, not identified by his author or his publisher as the quintessential D&D cash cow, made his debut, and it is partly this even-handed use of the character that made him so interesting at the time. Over the course of The Crystal Shard, and the following books in the Icewind Dale Trilogy, Drizzt stands out as a fantastic protagonist without being hyper-competent or stealing the spotlight from either the setting itself or the rest of the cast, feeling as much like another player at the D&D table as the main character of a novel. Start-of-act journal-like essays (added to later editions of the Icewind Dale Trilogy, I think) provide additional insight into Drizzt's character and outlook and speak directly on the story's themes without intruding on the plot or bogging the overall product down with preachiness. The pacing of Drizzt's portrayal in this book, which I can't help but feel tapered off somewhere after the later novel Starless Night, is very well-done here, and in re-experiencing this book again after so many years, I find myself remembering quite fondly why I loved the character so much in his heyday. The rest of the cast is likewise entertaining, although coming at this book after the rest of the series is a little awkward in several aspects. For one thing, the first three books listed under the Legend of Drizzt title, the Dark Elf Trilogy, are Drizzt's origin story but were written later, so reading the books in chronological order does for the writing what watching the Hobbit Trilogy before the Lord of the Rings movies does for the action and special effects: it's pretty obvious that Salvatore had improved by the time Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn were written, so without knowledge of the series history, The Crystal Shard can appear to be an inexplicable dip in quality and complexity. Furthermore, the inherently "basic" nature of this Dungeons & Dragons story, while serving well as an entry point, can feel underwhelming compared to the more inventive and complex stories later released under the Forgotten Realms brand, a theme that continues to a lesser extent throughout the two books immediately following, with The Halfling's Gem being the least by-the-numbers adventure of the three. There are only two parts of his story in particular that feel unwieldy to me, however. The first is the character of Catti-brie, who in later books is written as both a more prominent character and speaking with a dwarf-like accent which she inexplicably does not have in her appearances here (despite having it at the end of Sojourn, Book III in the Drizzt line, and in Streams of Silver, immediately after this one). She does absolutely nothing worthwhile but the narrative insists that she is strong, fiery, and independent, which kind of feels like the book wanted to make her the token female warrior but gave up halfway through and settled for having her say some mildly interesting lines of dialogue here and there while taking great pains to describe how much her eyes sparkled. Drizzt mentally refers to her as his most trusted friend and companion, but we are given no context for this connection within the book itself, resulting in Catti-brie's inclusion here feeling forced and awkward. This is doubly stark if the reader happens to be a long-time fan of Drizzt and his companions prior to reading The Crystal Shard, as Catti-brie is one of the most interesting and frequently-utilized members of the "Company of the Hall" in later stories. Seeing her so minimalized is, in retrospect, kind of insulting to the character. The second unwieldy portion of the book is the dragon that happens to be involved in the barbarian Wulfgar's portion of the plot. While the scenes involving this dragon are well-done on many levels, this particular part of the story feels awkwardly tangential when it occurs, because all of the other plot threads involved in The Crystal Shard--from the barbarians to the political conflicts of Ten-Towns to the dwarves to the demon who ends up being summoned by coincidence to the world during the story's events, right up to the primary conflict with Akar Kessel's army--the dragon is the only part of the story that receives no build-up and only a very small token bit of foreshadowing before it happens. When it does happen, it happens with style, but it feels almost like a one-chapter sidestory than a real part of the novel. The inclusion of a dragon feels forced, as if it were an item on the checklist of Fantasy Adventure Staples the author needed to include, and compared to other dragon encounters in fantasy fiction, such as Tolkien's Smaug, or even Shimmergloom the shadow dragon in the book immediately after this one, this one falls flat and leaves a lasting legacy not so much in the imagination of the reader as on Drizzt Do'Urden's own weapon belt.Apart from those stumbling points, though, The Crystal Shard is a great time from beginning to end. If ever there were an example of reading a Lord of the Rings *movie* in book form, it would be this. While there are certainly better fantasy novels out there, and far more interesting ones to choose from within the Forgotten Realms line itself, The Crystal Shard is one I'd recommend that every fan of the genre read at least once, either to re-acquaint themselves with the basics of these kinds of stories, or to see one of the earliest examples of what made both the Forgotten Realms and Drizzt himself so popular amongst fantasy RPG and novel fans.A note about the audiobook:Victor Bevine's narration is quite good, giving the characters suitable voices and adjusting the drama level suitably for most scenes, however, I feel that some of the subtleties of tone are lost in the narration and there were definitely a few places where the narrator mis-spoke or mis-read a word. The audiobook also contains the prologue, opening Drizzt essay, and first chapter of Streams of Silver as a teaser at the very end, after the credits.

I came to the series late enough that to me this is the fourth book of the series and said of the first. With Drizzt origin story becoming the pre Trilogy and the first three books I did not get a chance to experience the sorry as the author originally intended. Nonetheless the fantasy world that he wrote in of DnD pulled me right in. This is the second read through and I found myself laughing and cheering as if it was my first.IFor the observant reader or binge reader will catch a few inconsistencies in the drows backstory particularly concerning how we got the awesome Panther. Outside of that there are few mistakes to be caught and very little to pull the reader outside of the story.

R.A. Salvatore and his Legend of Drizzt series has been one of my favorite series for at least the past 15 years. Salvatore consistently tells not only a great and well-written story, but one with some of the best sword-fighting (and other) scenes in print. On top of that you get a heartfelt story of a character seeking to do the right thing in the face of insurmountable odds. All of which is told with Fantasy tropes and an expansive D&D world. This may be book 4 but is always the place I recommend new readers of Drizzt start. It was the first book published and an accessibly entry point into this wonderful tale.

"The Crystal Shard" has an interesting pedigree. It is the first in the "Icewind Dale Trilogy", the first book Salvatore published featuring Drizzt Do'Urden, but it is the fourth in the "Forgotten Realms" series. Depending on where you start reading, Drizzt may take on a slightly different perspective. I started with the prequel "Dark Elf Trilogy" where the focus was nearly all on Drizzt and his growth as a ranger and protector of good. When I got to The Crystal Shard, Drizzt was still an important character, but he shared the spotlight with Bruenor, a Dwarf introduced in the last book of the "Dark Elf Trilogy", Regis, a Halfling, Wulfgar, a Barbarian, and Catti-brie, a Human. This tale featured numerous action scenes, which took priority over character development. When reading this kind of book, you have to keep in mind it is fantasy, written in the 1980's during the height of Dungeons and Dragons, and the author is following a good versus evil model where the heroes are pitted against unbelievable odds and powerful enemies, yet they always seem to find a way to win. Of course, the heroes are battered and bruised, and sometimes slightly injured, but there is no doubt as to the victory because the heroes find some magical weapons, potions, and/or knowledge that helps them overcome the enemy.Overall, the story met my expectations, but there wasn't anything spectacular to push it up another star. It was a fun fantasy read, and something I think teenagers and fantasy enthusiasts would enjoy. It definitely is not gritty like George R.R. Martin.

Review

An essential addition to any public or academic library with significant collections of Holocaust literature or Jewish genealogy. (Jewish Libraries Newsletter)The USHMM Encyclopedia is a highly significant and overdue synthesis of existing documentary studies and specialized knowledge on the history and profile of Nazi concentration camps. (German Studies Review)Using a variety of scholarly and archival materials, the editors provide a very detailed analysis and history of the events that took place in the towns, villages, and cities of German-occupied Eastern Europe. . . . A rich source of information, this will make an excellent addition to reference collections. (Library Journal)Well researched . . . accessible . . . this valuable resource covers an aspect of the Holocaust rarely addressed and never in such detail. A valuable addition to libraries focusing on the Holocaust.August 15, 2009 (Library Journal)The massive two-volume set . . . focuses specifically on the ghettos of Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. It stands without doubt as the definitive reference guide on this topic in the world today. This is not hyperbole, but simply a recognition of the meticulous collaborative research that went into assembling such a massive collection of information. . . . Every serious scholar of the Holocaust in the East and every academic library should have this encyclopedia on hand. (Holocaust and Genocide Studies)[This] volume would well serve those who research the Holocaust or work with survivor memoirs and testimonies.April 2, 2010 (The American Jewish World)A readable encyclopedia with very up-to-date bibliographical sources. This important reference work belongs on every library bookshelf.November 2009 (Choice)All in all, the USHMM encyclopedia is a most welcome contribution to the history and memory of the Nazi concentration camps. For scholars, this first volume is a valuable reference work whose great strength lies first and foremost in the transfer of knowledge, bringing the hitherto mostly German discourse to the wider international audience. (Studies in Contemporary Jewry)[A] staggering achievement. . . . at around 2,000 pages it’s an even more impressive compendium of scholarly research and editorial enterprise than Volume I . . . Without the efforts of this consortium of international contributors, most of these places . . . might have disappeared from historical memory and slipped into oblivion. (The Jewish Daily Forward)This work will be of particular use to specialists in the fields of German and Austrian history, European labor history, and the history of World War II.Fall 2010 (Jewish Book World)

An indispensable source that no one individual could compile in a lifetime of research. . . . An especially useful reference work for anyone working with survivor memoirs and testimonies. (Christopher R. Browning author of Ordinary Men: Reserve Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland)The most efficacious way of fighting the scourge of Holocaust denial is with the facts. No argument posed by deniers can withstand the overwhelming weight of the truth. This encyclopedia will provide a host of detail about crucial aspects of the Holocaust that cannot be found elsewhere. (Deborah E. Lipstadt author of History on Trial: My Day in Court with David Irving)Choice Outstanding Academic Title, 2009Winner, 2009 National Jewish Book Awards, HolocaustWinner, 2010 Judaica Reference AwardAn outstanding work of scholarship that marks a major achievement in studies of the Shoah. Martin Dean and his expert contributors draw on archival records, survivor testimonies, and publications in countless languages to produce vivid accounts of hundreds of the Holocaust sites now known as 'ghettos.' The results both confirm and unsettle conventional wisdom. . . . The details are unforgettable: a ghetto that consisted of only two houses; an orphanage known as a 'children's cage'; Jews who went on foot from their homes to the killing center of Treblinka. (Doris L. Bergen author of War and Genocide: A Concise History of the Holocaust)A meticulously researched account of Nazi ghettos in Eastern Europe. The editors have mined all possible resources in many languages and presented their findings in succinct, lucid language. The production of the volume is exemplary. It will serve as the standard reference work on the subject. (Zvi Gitelman University of Michigan)This magnificent collective effort, uniting the research and expertise of leading scholars from around the world, provides a fundamental new reference for the history of the Holocaust. Anyone who wishes to understand the variety of Jewish experience in the ghettos and the scale of the destruction of a whole European world must consult this encyclopedia. Very detailed study of the subject in question. A one-stop shop for all reference needs!

An unbelievable compilation which won't be complete, I understand, until 2025. Just an incredible resource.

To begin to understand the Konzentrationslager system, one must study many, many facets. No single work will ever truly cover the entire subject, it simply is not possible. Primary sources will always be paramount but this modern work is a must for serious scholars of the camp / ghetto sphere. Not only does it document and record every site within the system, it also shows the great variety of camp within the SS realm through essays, diagrams and a number of plans and sketches. When addressing the subject, too many simply refer to Auschwitz, or perhaps a few of the other well known sites. This work goes well beyond that, inviting further study and research of the noted sites within its vast scope. Many almost unheard of locales are covered - perhaps for the first time in the English language. Factual, well researched and easy to use as a serious scholarly reference, the USHMM has produced an excellent work for people to study for generations to come.

Fantastic resource!

This is an excellent introduction to the technology of fiber optics for the non-technical person. No previous knowledge is assumed, and equations are kept to a minimum. If you're completely new to the lightwave transport field, this is the first book you should read!

I'll be entering the master's program in electrical engineering at Stanford in the fall in fiber optic communications and I'm so glad that I read this book before hand. This book has to be one of the easiest technical (although nontheoretical/nonmathematical) reads. It helped me understand fundamental concepts without getting bogged down in mathematical derivations. Hecht presents the material in a very easy to understand manner. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about fiber optics. Now, after having read this book I'm confident to tackle more advanced texts in fiber optic communications.

Understanding fiber optics is a wonderful instrument for those of us who need to know the basics. I enjoyed the non-technical yet fundamental aspects that were covered. If you are interested in Fiber Optics, I highly recommend this book.

This book provides an excellent, up-to-date review of fiber optics, including light sources and a review of the physics of light and fibers. It is a must-read for those who need to understand optics and fibers, a constantly changing environment that Jeff provides a rather complete snapshot of. I heartily recommend it to readers with a range of skill levels.

It's a textbook for class, but it's actually pretty readable! It's interesting to read, and the chapters are actually pretty short.

This book is an indepth study of fiber optics theory. I use it as the reference guide during the teaching of my Fiber Optics Communications class.

As someone who works in the financial field that had to get up to speed on fiber optics, I purchased this book, "Introduction to Fiber Optics" by Crisp, and "Fiber Optic Reference Guide" by Goff. This was definitely the most technically oriented of the three, but it did have good detail for the areas where the other two books weren't thorough enough. This text is definitely more for targeted research as a reference book, and not what you should get if you want to sit down and read up on the subject. There were a lot of areas where the added depth provided by this book were helpful, but it certainly has the feel of a book more oriented towards academia and professional engineers.

C.H.L.'s attempt to justify Hecht's misinformation is a bit weak1. The G.711 recommendation is probably 30+ years old and the US telephone companies have adhered to it since ratification. In fact, G.711 simply confirmed what the US and European companies were already doing so the US telephone companies were using 64Kbps for voice even before G.711.2. Packet switching has nothing (or very little) to do with voice. Voice is carried via circuit switched channels.3. When voice is carried via a digital channel in the US (at 64Kbps, I might add), one form of signaling "steals" the low order bit of an 8 bit voice sample of each sixth sample of the 24 channels on a DS-1 (AKA T-1) circuit. Because of this, a data channel carried over one of these 64Kbps channels is only able to provide 56Kbps. Maybe this is where Hecht went wrong. But don't buy or not buy Hecht's book based on this one error (in the big scheme of things it's fairly small). The real problem with the book is that it just doesn't do a jood job of explaining optical communications. A better defense of Hecht's book might be that Hecht was attempting to write about all of the uses of optical fiber and not just communications.
