A young boy named Arthur used to watch one of the top black college tennis players practice and he watched him so much that the player, Ron Charity, eventually asked Arthur if he'd like to learn to play. When most people hear the name Arthur Ashe, they think tennis and automatically go to HIV/AIDS. This book does not focus on that and instead teaches readers about his life on the court. While Crystal Hubbard does touch on the fact that Arthur was also a great speaker, she focuses mostly on his game and the incredible barriers he had to overcome as an African American.This is a great tribute to Arthur. I do wish however more focus was spent on what he did off the court as that is often overlooked. He was a great tennis player, but there was more to him. Any tennis (or sports) fan would like this book and it's a great book to read to younger readers learning about the history of tennis.

My son is learning to play tennis. He's nine years old, and of course, Mr. Ashe died before he was born. Reading this story about an exceptional athlete who also happened to have been a genuine hero was great for him. Ms. Hubbard wrote a story that is engaging in a way that we don't often see in biographies of this type. Just an all around great book.

An argument based on the minimalistic jargon and discrete use of equations allows most anyone interested in starting from scratch or uncovering a previously unknown mistake in design to benefit from this book.

I bought this book as a replacement for the same book which I bought at a Radio Shack over 30 years ago. To this day, this book remains one of the best books on the subject since it presents all of the basic design principals in an easy to read fashion which is easily comprehended by the layman. No rocket science is required to understand this book, thanks to the author's very good writing skills! Even Gilligan of Gilligan's Island could build a decent sounding set of stereo speakers after reading this book.

Excellent book for beginners. Covers a wide range of concepts with sufficient detail. Of course you need to know some of the science involved otherwise it will sound like Greek and Latin. I use this book to understand the fundamental concepts. If I need more detail, I can always refer to a scientific paper on that specific topic. Author does an excellent job of not only introducing to the concepts, but also tells you what is good and what is bad. For example, in the section about Thiele parameters, he tells you what are acceptable values. I love this book. Worth every penny.

Maybe it's just my (Kindle) copy. It has blank/missing pages, tables... starting in Chapter 3 (at location 450). It's impossible to get a flowing narrative to know if this book is any good at all.What a BUST!

I'm a big Weems fan! I bought the 1st edition ~25 years ago. I used the first edition to build dozens of Hi-Fi, Pro-Audio and Car loudspeaker systems. With my first edition getting pretty worn with use, so I recently purchased the 4th edition, and I am very pleased. There are other books, but Weems book is stell the best speaker book for the money!The 4th edition has been edited to the fundamental information required to design loudspeakers. In addition, Mr. Weems added design information on 3rd and 4th order cross over networks and added the governing equations to determine fb, f3 and Vb for closed and vented boxes. The BASIC source code for programs to design speaker and cross overs is also provided. Yea, the BASIC code is a little dated since most operating systems don't have a BASIC interpreter these days. I would like to see the programs downloadable (preferably in VB), but I have used the source code and the equations to write make my own VB application.Weems provides both exact solutions (for math lovers), and the "minimal math" approach as well. Either way, you need to do "some" math to correctly design a loudspeaker enclosure. Most folks, who have mastered high school algebra and can solve simple equations, should be able to use the charts and graphs and design boxes and cross over networks.I recommend this book for everyone from pro's to beginners. For the Physicists and Engineers out there, you may be a little disappointed that the derivation of the solutions are not presented. For beginners, if the design task seems overwhelming, this book will provide a great foundation to buy a kit from one of the online retailers. Either way, if I had to choose one speaker building book, this would be the one.

The book provides fine general information about speaker design. It is not particularly useful for modern speaker design as it does not provide any advice on use of modern software to design speakers.

I read this book at the recommendation of Hyde where I recently enrolled my teenage daughter who was failing out of her senior year in a good public school for a whole host of reasons (most of which center around attitude, substance abuse and lack of self-esteem).Like many parents in this situation, I struggled with understanding where my parenting skills failed. This book takes a very different approach to parenting and provides relatable examples and useful tools to really dig deep and figure out how to turn things around. I still have a long way to go on my journey but I will keep referring back to the lessons on this book as I go.

I don't even remember ordering this one......it's good perusing but my children are all adults now and I'm sorry I didn't have access to more books like this when I was younger and still parenting full-time. I'll probably resell this one.

I started reading this book by flipping around the chapters and finding useful ideas about parenting and was so profoundly effected that I studied it from cover to cover. I asked my husband to read it also, and at first he was luke warm to the idea because he is reading his own books, but he is sailing through it and talking a lot about the different concepts. We have a whole new understanding of what it means to be good parents. This book offers a different perspective, which is parenting by working on yourself and expecting a lot from yourself and your children. If I had more money I would buy this book for all my friends with kids. Since I can't do that I am recommending it to everyone I know. Competent, happy and socially caring, that's what I want for my kids. I have nothing to do with the Hyde school or anything, this book is for parents everywhere.

Although this book was written primarily for parents whose children are students at the Hyde Schools in Bath, ME and Woodstock CT, the principles outlined are extremely valuable for all parents dealing with behavioral and character issues with their adolescent children. Malcolm and Laura Gauld emphasize the need for truth over harmony in the home, along with honest accountability from both parents and children. The Gaulds also introduce concepts for helping young people to develop mature character and to realize their own unique potential. The priority for parents is to become an inspiration for their children. As the authors say, parenting "...is hard, is doable, and it's never too late."

As the sibling of a former alum, I can safely say that the dogmatism of its philosophy has caused permanent damage to my family. The values themselves are fine but generic - truth, courage, etc, are basically copy-pasted from AA, where the school gets its inspiration. The problem is not in the values, but that they are applied in a dogmatic and controlling way that leaves lasting scars. My sister and most of her high school friends graduated twenty years ago and continue to struggle with the same mental health issues as they did when they were enrolled - bipolar, addiction, alcoholism, etc. Not only did the school not address their underlying issues, but now there is an added layer of crippling anxiety and perfectionism of not being okay with who they are or who anyone else is. These students find it challenging to absorb the inherent tension in human relationships and to navigate the world without an intense structure being imposed onto them.I can see why a certain type of parent might like the program - it encourages an authoritarian, disciplinarian approach and couches it in self-help terms. This gives inner peace and calm to a parent who lacks the true leadership necessary to deal with ambiguity, and would prefer a my way or the highway approach. While my sister was enrolled in the program, our house was like an asylum, but my parents were very happy.

Eye-opening. A must read for anyone interested in women's rights

Life in America is something we take for granted. There is another world out there. Until all people are free, none of us can truly be free.

Two women become the voices for millions more in this horrifying yet uplifting literary work. The book vividly details the affects of misogyny and sexism against half of humanity, and how it is manifested around the world. With references to at least 70 countries, no race, religion, or culture is given a pass. Some acts of violence against women that are addressed are universal - present in just about every country on Earth. Rape (including mass war rape), domestic violence, forced prostitution & sex slavery, and human trafficking are some of them. Other forms of violence that are addressed are more specific to certain areas of the globe. Honor killings (an entire chapter is devoted to it), dowry deaths & bride burnings, acid attacks, bride kidnappings, and female genital cutting are examples. There are many stories about and quotes by women who were victims of such atrocities. But for every heartbreaking tale, there are passages of hope. The story of Mukhtaran Bibi is especially uplifting. The authors conclude that violence against women is a learned habit - one than can be unlearned. Highly recommended.

This book is a well-researched and compassionate overview of a subject that is coming to the forefront of victim rights advocates. Both authors speak to the individual and collective brutalization of women worldwide, and the anecdotal information from the female crime victims who are so brave to challenge the systems and people who brutalized them lend a personal note to the statistics presented. ...after reading this book I feel like I came close.In the daily fantasy world of "wow, wouldn't it be cool to live like that" most of us drift back to the conclusion that our current lives are pretty good after all.And though when I got up this morning I felt perhaps more happy than ever in my cushy home with its central heat and air, I feel like I also got to live the cheater's version of being a River Rat.And that's because this book is just so darned well written. Alternating between the words of the author and the words of Mr. Salwey the reader tastes the essence of River Rat life as each chapter covers one month of the year - beginning, fascinatingly enough, with April, the month a true River Rat considers "January."One chapter you're digging ginseng, the next you're fishing, the next you're hunting ducks....and you get the full narrative of the changing pace and surroundings of each of these activities. You feel almost as if you are visiting a whole new country with each successive month.Shucks, I live only an hour from the Mississippi myself. And though I will never be a River Rat, I got a good glimpse of the life, and thru this book I will forever be more mindful of our changing seasons, and the beauty of Nature right outside my door every day.

I had to buy another copy of this book,last one was misplaced. A great read for those that loves living in harmony with nature and what it has to offer you..cheers

I purchased this as a gift for my dad. He absolutely loved the book and described it as being hard to put down. I bought this because he loves being out on the Mississippi River (and I also talked to others who've read it and liked it). So, if you are looking for a good read yourself or as a gift, you will not be disappointed.

I liked the format of the book. Each chapter a month with a correlating article from Kenny's past. The lifestyle that was described was informative of years gone by and the philosophy hidden throughout the book is spot on.

Bought this as a gift for my 14 year old nefew and he loved it getting that kid to read was a real pain.. He now has requested more of Kenny's books! I also have read it amazing! shipped super fast.had a question emailed sender got response quickly!

I live only a few miles from the Mississippi river and down river from where this was written. Yes there are people out there that do respect Mother Nature. Very fun to read to see how real river rats live!!
