Eye-opening. A must read for anyone interested in women's rights

Life in America is something we take for granted. There is another world out there. Until all people are free, none of us can truly be free.

Two women become the voices for millions more in this horrifying yet uplifting literary work. The book vividly details the affects of misogyny and sexism against half of humanity, and how it is manifested around the world. With references to at least 70 countries, no race, religion, or culture is given a pass. Some acts of violence against women that are addressed are universal - present in just about every country on Earth. Rape (including mass war rape), domestic violence, forced prostitution & sex slavery, and human trafficking are some of them. Other forms of violence that are addressed are more specific to certain areas of the globe. Honor killings (an entire chapter is devoted to it), dowry deaths & bride burnings, acid attacks, bride kidnappings, and female genital cutting are examples. There are many stories about and quotes by women who were victims of such atrocities. But for every heartbreaking tale, there are passages of hope. The story of Mukhtaran Bibi is especially uplifting. The authors conclude that violence against women is a learned habit - one than can be unlearned. Highly recommended.

This book is a well-researched and compassionate overview of a subject that is coming to the forefront of victim rights advocates. ...after reading this book I feel like I came close.In the daily fantasy world of "wow, wouldn't it be cool to live like that" most of us drift back to the conclusion that our current lives are pretty good after all.And though when I got up this morning I felt perhaps more happy than ever in my cushy home with its central heat and air, I feel like I also got to live the cheater's version of being a River Rat.And that's because this book is just so darned well written. Alternating between the words of the author and the words of Mr. Salwey the reader tastes the essence of River Rat life as each chapter covers one month of the year - beginning, fascinatingly enough, with April, the month a true River Rat considers "January."One chapter you're digging ginseng, the next you're fishing, the next you're hunting ducks....and you get the full narrative of the changing pace and surroundings of each of these activities. You feel almost as if you are visiting a whole new country with each successive month.Shucks, I live only an hour from the Mississippi myself. And though I will never be a River Rat, I got a good glimpse of the life, and thru this book I will forever be more mindful of our changing seasons, and the beauty of Nature right outside my door every day.

I had to buy another copy of this book,last one was misplaced. A great read for those that loves living in harmony with nature and what it has to offer you..cheers

I purchased this as a gift for my dad. He absolutely loved the book and described it as being hard to put down. I bought this because he loves being out on the Mississippi River (and I also talked to others who've read it and liked it). So, if you are looking for a good read yourself or as a gift, you will not be disappointed.

I liked the format of the book. Each chapter a month with a correlating article from Kenny's past. The lifestyle that was described was informative of years gone by and the philosophy hidden throughout the book is spot on.

Bought this as a gift for my 14 year old nefew and he loved it getting that kid to read was a real pain.. He now has requested more of Kenny's books! I also have read it amazing! shipped super fast.had a question emailed sender got response quickly!

I live only a few miles from the Mississippi river and down river from where this was written. Yes there are people out there that do respect Mother Nature. Very fun to read to see how real river rats live!!

The (sub)title I found to be very misleading - 'A Bestseller's secrets to writing romance'. I found the book to be more on the craft of writing than it had to do with romance other than plugging her books. It was about chapter 18 before there were any tips on writing romance. If you are looking for a book to guide you on the mechanisms of the layout of writing romance:I really wouldn't recommend this book, as I think you will finish the book as clueless as to how to actually write a romance as when you started the book. There were however some very good helpful tips on the craft of writing.I had to give this 3 stars as I found it to be lacking in what the title promised. Guess I will continue searching for that how-to book on writing romance because this isn't it.

As an author just getting my feet wet writing in the romance genre, this book has instantly become my holy grail and I knew it would be within the first few pages. This had a lot of good reminders, however, the first seven chapters of this book weren’t helpful to me—they might be to you depending on where you are in your career and how many other writing manuals you’ve already read. The first seven chapters in particular are heavily autobiographical, and I already know a lot of authors’ stories. However, after that, there is good material for keeping you going when you get frustrated.This also might be a more helpful book if you’ve read all her fiction books. I haven’t read one. She refers to her own work frequently.There was a lot of stuff I highlighted—stuff you may already know, but it’s a good reminder, and inspiration is always welcome. The chapter on saggy middles is short and disappointing. I did like her advice about how, when you get stuck, start over at the good part. “If you’re bored writing it, I can guarantee readers will be bored reading it.”

Write Naked is the perfect combination of solid market information, honest personal experience, and how to dive deep and get the story you want onto the page. I'm a huge fan of Jennifer's books and personally, this is the most meaningful book on writing I've read. It's resonating on so many levels, and my writing is definitely going to show for it. All the things I experience as a writer; fear, wavering confidence, distraction, scratching my head and wondering what's missing, the need for information on craft and the business are all there. Making it personal, the author shares her own experiences and quotes by other writers. This book renewed my commitment to my career as a published author in a way nothing else has. Thanks, Jen!

Write Naked is one of the best writing books I've read so far. Jennifer Probst follows her own advice about writing naked by digging deep and putting it out there. I loved her blunt honesty when people ask which book is her favorite (I feel the same way) and when she mentioned being on deadline and the protein powder incident.The author did an incredible job of balancing being approachable, encouraging, and straightforward on topics ranging from characters, emotion, subplots, theme, writer's block and everything in between. I took several notes while reading and did the end of chapter exercise as I read.This book is a helpful addition to any writer's bookshelf to strengthen their writing muscle.

What can I say that others haven't... I had this book on my radar for awhile and counted down the days until it was released. I love all of Jennifer's books and knew this book would become my go to book for craft. I don't have any good reason why I thought this, I just did. And guess what? I was right. I am in love with this book. I am a newbie writer. So, of course I am gobbling up as many craft books as I can. The problem I run into is some of them or BORING and I can't get through them. My kindle is littered with half read craft books. Not because I don't find what I'm reading helpful... They just don't hold my attention. Jennifer's book it just as witty and fun to read as her novels. She's real and honest and totally relatable. The exercises after each chapter help you learn and understand not only about writing, but about yourself as a writer. Both are equally important.

One of the best books on writing with such an honest, open, and often humorous back story of Probst writing career. From her failures to success. Do's and dont's. And more do's and dont's.So many eye opening subjects that had me reading chapters again, writing down major points and even getting a highlighter out.While keeping things on a serious, business tone throughout the book she is able to hit every topic an aspiring author, or a veteran author would have. While also telling laugh out loud moments in her career, to truthful breakbacking, hard to "write the words" moments.I can't recommend this book enough!Great quotes! Many tips! And a love for writing that was found at a very early age!Thank you Jennifer Probst! May the words always be with you!

The information in JERM is concise, practical, and to the point. It has become a must have in my collection alongside my Peopleware and Man Made Month. It has lots of images that do an excellent job of explaining just how to make sure your requirements remain useful on a practical level. I bought this copy for my team at the office, but I'll be ordering one for my home library as well.

Alan Davis has written a good book on Requirements Management. He has explained his approach and includes a lot common sense with it. I had just finished a class discussion on requirement attributes, and we had "brainstormed" a comprehensive list of 30+ attributes. On this topic, Davis explained how his opinion had changed over time so that now he felt eight attributes was enough. I agreed completely. Reviewing a list of a hundred or more requirements, and validating that each met a list of attributes, which list makes more sense to you - 8 or more than 30? A good book, but a little "over-priced" for $35 for only 240 pages.

I am reading another book on the same topic as I read this one, and I must say, this one is so much easier to read and understand. If you have any experience in software, this book will be a pleasure to read.I would recommend to both practitioners and students.

If you think that requirements are not all that necessary, this book might change your view: Before you build something, you should decide what you want to build. If you think you cannot start development until requirements are "complete," Davis will convince you that, since requirements change, requirements management is an ongoing activity. He breaks it down into three major areas:- Requirements elicitation (i.e. determining the actual needs of the stakeholders): This includes identifying ALL the stakeholders and also knowing when and how to apply different elicitation techniques. Davis comments on the proper use of modeling notations are really noteworthy.- Requirements triage (to balance the delivery date and the development budget against desired requirements): If you don't know what triage is, then you should probably read this book. Its importance (and the author's bias) is manifest when you realize that it has the longest chapter in this book.- Requirements specification (i.e. documenting requirements): Davis advocates for the use of lists of discrete annotated requirements written in natural language just because natural language is the language of customers (and free text is not too manageable). Supporting models can also be sensibly used, but only for those parts of the system where the use of natural language would introduce too much risk, never to completely replace the written requirements."Just Enough Requirements Management" ends with a reminder of change as an unavoidable fact. It also includes an extensive annotated bibliography for those interested in learning more about requirements, just after reading this cleverly-written book...

The title says it all, this book really does explore all of the issues surrounding how to do just enough requirements management on your software development projects. I'd argue that it provides the insight that you require to put together an requirements program within your organization that is right for you, one that is sufficiently agile yet still reflects your situation. It explores strategies for eliciting requirements, prioritizing/triaging requirements, specifying requirements, and finally managing requirements change. Davis managed to pull off what few writers can do - by exploring the requirements management spectrum he has presented a range of strategies which should speak to both traditionalists and agilists. For traditionalists he presents some pretty convincing arguments that the "big requirements document up front" strategy might not be all that effective, and for agilists he presents convincing arguments that we need to invest some effort in requirements documentation. Most important is a running theme throughout the book: the goal isn't to write a perfect requirements document, it's to deliver working software which meets the needs of your stakeholders in a timely and cost effective manner. Sounds like really great advice to me.

Al Davis has done it again, with a highly practical and useable book on the ongoing process of effectively managing changing requirements.Davis is an expert in requirements, bringing to light his vast expertise in many domains including systems engineering on real (very large) projects as well as commercial software. He is perhaps THE expert on requirements triage.This book provides practical advise on how to do triage and provides examples and wisdom on documenting requirements that honors both the need to 'write it down' in some way with the reality of ever-changing requirements.

It is often said that sports teams can provide hope to those who are talented enough to play. Usually this refers to a high school football team, but in the winter of 1981-82, the Dunbar Poets in Baltimore’s roughest section put together an amazing team and amazing season that not only united the team but also showcased the talent of their coach Bob Wade.How this coach and his players made this team one of the greatest in the history of high school basketball is captured in this well researched book by Alejandro Danois. The book explores the lives and tribulations of not only Coach Wade, but also has significant passages on the four Dunbar players whose careers took them all the way to the NBA: Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues, David Wingate, Reggie Williams and Reggie Lewis. The reader will get to know these players almost like they are long-lost friends. Coach Wade is portrayed as a tough-as-nails father and coach who values his players’ accomplishments in the classroom as well as on the court. The reader will have the same feelings for the coach as he or she does for the players by the end of the book.The story is made more special because of the situation in Baltimore at the time this team won the hearts of the city. Crime was rampant as the crack epidemic took hold of Baltimore and other cities. There wasn’t much hope for escaping that life, but through hard work, smarts and tough love from an excellent basketball coach, that happened to many of the young men on that Poets team – and not just the NBA stars. inspirational true ordeal and the coach who provided the seminal guidance and tough love to make the players invest in the team and hence themselves to achieve greatness. Their accountability to their team and hence themselves, melded individual good players into a once in a hundred year team and its members achieved self sacrificing success, which resulting in their individual success. This is a story not without sadness, as players before them that had stellar talent, succumbed to the evils and the resultant failure of their ghetto environment. Because the coach grew up in this neighborhood and earned success himself through dedication and commitment that resulted in his professional football success, he had been where these boys were and demanded of them what he demanded of himself and they produced. This would be an academy award movie as it is a story of academy award lives.

When I first started to read this book was not sure the book was going to be any good. I remember these guys from the mid 80's and David Wingate at Georgetown. Mugsy Bogues I remember playing in the NBA. The start of the book I thought mugsy was pretty high on himself and was turning me off to the book but the further I got into the book the better it got to the point that could not read it fast enough to see what happened when they played Camden. Was disappointed about the game that never was. I definitely recommend this book.

Beautifully written in a style that connects the reader to the players and the basketball court, The Boys of Dunbar is a powerful testament to desire, drive, persistence and friendship. The setting of Baltimore gives the reader the chance to see that this great city produced some of our greatest sports figures but also outstanding people. Sports for so many is their way of expressing who they are or would like to be and this book will gives the reader the opportunity to reflect. I highly encourage that this book be read by a wide audience--parents should read it, and better yet give it to your children--all will greatly benefit from this timely book.

The book was well written and provided great insight of the Dunbar basketball team/coaches and the neighboring supporting system of the recreational centers. As a product of the Baltimore City Public School system and resident of Baltimore during those years, I applaud the support provided by Mr Wade and staff, as well as the Recreation Centers' coaches, to the many young men who comprised those teams. I congratulate Mr Danois as a master storyteller.

Enjoyed reading this book. Recognized several of the players names from when they went on to college and then the pros. Most of them after basketball have gone on to be successful with their careers. It was great also to see the love and respect they have for their coach over 30 years later.

This was a heartwarming glimpse into the good, bad, and ugly of young men who swim in shark-infested waters and the brave elders who devote their lives to helping them through perilous journeys. Mugsy's refusal to limit himself, Reggie's humility despite otherworldly talent, the unselfishness of Graham and Lewis, and the resiliency of Wingate is inspirational and uplifting. Coach Wade and Coach Barham are American heroes. God bless you all. I was at the Harlem Classic and feel blessed to have been there!

Fascinating, thrilling story - well-written. I was not sure what to expect in reading a story about a high school basketball team. It turned out to be a fantastic story - loved hearing about each member of the team. And the story of Muggsy Bogues - and his determination and ultimate success - was so inspirational. Well done, Mr. Danois

As a basketball fan of the 80's and knowing the key players and coach on the Dunbar team this book was a fun read reliving the past. It's also a great story about a strong leader who built a great winning culture at Dunbar and kids who pushed each other to get better.

I did not realize how bad schools/teachers are until 6th grade when, at Math League meets, none of the problems matched what was learned in school. This book pointed out that pre-algebra concepts have been skipped since 4th grade. Apparently our teachers are more comfortable with arts and crafts than with teaching math. This books was great in catching up with what is expected in 6th grade. It is mostly pre-algebra/algebra, but it also has a bit of geometry. Each page has a brief example, it works better if a parent is available to give a more extensive explanation, or additional examples.

Nice workbook would be better if it had better examples in it.

Mainly informal, this in not a workbook.

I like these inexpensive little consumable books. They have enough practice problems and examples without being intimidating to my special ed students.

really good pre algebra book. my son uses it.

Great book for supplementary work! However book does not have good explanations ( example on pg. 60).
