About the Author

Tomie dePaola is the beloved Caldecott Honor- and Newbery Honor-winning author and/or illustrator of close to 250 books, including Strega Nona and Quiet. ALONE ON THE PROWL   Most cats prefer the single life. Usually, big cats only tolerate company in order to mate or to raise their cubs. Big cats communicate with scent marks or roars to let their neighbors know, “This is my space. Keep out!”   But there’s one big exception: lions. Lions are the only cats that live in social groups, called prides. Within a pride, nearly every female is related. Moms, sisters, aunts, and cousins all work together to raise cubs and hunt for enough food to support the pride. A dominant male or two will guard the pride’s territory. He also babysits the cubs while their mothers are off hunting.   Young males are forced to leave the pride once they are old enough to hunt for themselves. These lions sometimes form small, all-boy gangs, called bachelor groups. The youngsters stay together until they’re big enough to challenge a dominant male for control of a pride.

I purchased this book for my daughter for use in our homeschool. She loves cats, both domestic and wild, and wanted to learn more about them as part of our study of animals for science.The photography in this book is stunning, but else would you expect from National Geographic? Tons of useful information, and a great resource for anyone interested in learning about wild cats! This is a book that gets looked at over and over.

I was very surprised when I opened the packaging and noticed how large this book was. I was expecting a small abbreviated paperback. The pages of the book are sleek, glossy- with high quality- life like photographs of these beautiful, awesome animals.Anyone would gain a new appreciation for big cats- simply by thumbing through the pages- and viewing these animals as theydeserve to live in their natural habitats. Humans have driven these animals to the point of extinction. We need to give them a second chance. I would recommend this book to any child- so they can develop an awareness - and a reason to save these phenomenal wild cats.

My 9 year old son loves everything to do with wild animals, jungles, Africa, etc., and big cats are no exception. This book helped to feed his desire for more knowledge and cool information! He eagerly studies this book. The pictures are great: large and colorful. The information is presented in an exciting way, like National Geographic is known for. Great purchase!

My 4 year old and I generally love the NatGeo Kids books but I feel like this one falls short. For the price I should have just purchased each individual cat book, because this one really isn’t very comprehensive. Would not recommend.

My son loves this book - and I enjoyed reading through it with him. The photos and graphics are great and there was tons of information to learn. My one complaint would be that the binding on our copy was weak; within a few days of him carrying it around and opening it (frequently), the main cover popped off. Now we just carry the book around carefully and try to keep it inside the cover. (All of the pages are still bound together.)

The book is full of decent content; however, the book fell apart less than a week after purchasing. Would not recommend if you are looking for a good quality book that will last.

Nat Geo books are fantastic. I bought this one for myself, not my child. 😊

Our 3 1/2 year old grandson loves these books... and animals!

"Please allow me to introduce myself,.I'm a man of wealth and taste!I been around for a long, long, year,Stole many a mans soul and faith!Mick Jagger/Keith Richards Sympathy for the Devil! My parents thought the Blues was Devil's Music as have every generation of kids and parents before and since, because it's different more than anything else, if we were to go back and listen to our parents music there would be no growth and people would tire of the SOS (Same Old S...)! Maybe the lyrics were looser "Got my Mojo Working" as opposed to Amazing Grace? But I like them boyj!

While it is a good treatment of the history of the blues, it would be really nice if sellers would stop putting stickers all over the ISBN tag on back. Some of us actually use programs and applications that read the ISBN number to catalog books.

Although not evident from the title, this book is mainly about CUDA, NVIDIA's method for programming their GPUs, but the title is perhaps justified by the existence of chapters on half a dozen or so other packages for programming GPUs, including an important one on using GPUs on MPI lusters. Most of the examples are in C, but with a chapter on FORTRAN. As other reviewers have already mentioned, the book is either excessively wordy or wonderfully detailed, depending on your mode of learning. For me, it was too wordy: there were sometimes two or three pages to explain an algorithm that was immediately clear from the figure. I would add that the authors have a curious view of what readers might know or not know: they give a long explanation of IEEE floating-point formats, which I believe are well known among application programmers, but mention only in passing with no explanation such less well known concepts as atomic operations and Amdahl's law. Various generations of NVIDIA chips are mentioned by code names that are probably not familiar to those of us who just buy a graphics card, although an appendix at the end gives some details. All in all, I found this a very useful introduction to CUDA, and especially to problems of memory access management on GPU boards, which I knew nothing about beforehand. Nonetheless, it was clear that one would need access to the detailed library manuals and spec sheets for the particular chip one was using before undertaking a real coding project, as there seem to be rather significant differences between chips in how one might try to maximize efficient use of the multiple execution units, memory blocks, and different cache sizes on the different chips. I expect that to have life beyond the current generation of chips, an application would need to query the system for these properties and optimize accordingly at run time. The book has some hints on how to do this.

So much effort went into writing this text, but better guidance was needed. True, there are typos as many have said, but not as many as I find in most textbooks and research papers.Before I get started, I have one strong compliment for the text: exercises at the ends of the chapters, where they appear, are very well thought out and get right to the point.The worst part of this book is its index, which gets an unnegotiable F grade from me. So much is missing. Try looking for the gridDim built-in variable; it's not there. blockDim is, but not gridDim. Or look up "constant memory"; that's not there under "memory", "constant", or otherwise. In fact although most of parallel programming is about overcoming memory bottlenecks, the index doesn't say much about memory in general. Indexing books is very hard and is usually left to professional indexers; there really is such a trade. But for this book the authors needed to pay more attention to the end product.The overall arrangement is illogical, starting from an enormous abstraction and then adding detail. Better to begin with something small and concrete which can be understood, and build up.At several points a non-programmer was permitted to do the typing, which is like allowing a pilot to fly while waking out of general anesthesia. See Figure 10.4 at lines 1 and 5.Many concepts are never brought together in some kind of summary that one would ever turn to as a reference, such as special variables. One can also find seeming conflicts that need clarification, such as Table 5.1's "local" memory for automatic array variables that are "stored into the global memory" on the next page. Both turn out to be true, but the presentation is not ideal.References are sloppily missing in certain cases, such as ELLPACK on page 224.At several points the text completely derails with outrageous metaphors. For instance page 85, where the authors try to explain standard queries of an implementation's capabilities by informing us that "most American hotel rooms come with hair dryers". The illustration's purpose is to publish a thicker book that looks "more valuable", but the truth is that any programmer who read to page 85 knows that most libraries have functions for querying their parameters and limits. There's no need to digress into toothpaste in Asia.If you must take a course that is based on this text, things get worse for you: the authors made presentation slides, and you bear the risk that your instructor may use them in the classroom. These are not well thought out from either a clarity or instructional standpoint, and they are very cluttered with confusing details. One example is how tiled matrix multiplication is explained; one slide actually draws three 4x4 matrices with row, column, and matrix name (!!!) labels in every single cell, giving the poor class 3 x (4 x 4) x 3 = 144 extra trivialities to distract them on that slide alone.Another pedagogical problem with their slide example, which the book also mishandles, is that they've chosen to illustrate the use of submatrices by dividing a 4 x 4 problem into a 2 x 2 problem. Although this is the smallest case they could select, the difficulty is that the human brain comprehends these 2 x 2 divisions in terms of "corners" (top left, etc.) instead of columns and rows. The examples should have been 9 x 9 divided into 3 x 3.In fairness, Kirk and Hwu did not have the best of resources available to assemble this book from. nVIDIA's "CUDA C Programming Guide" has no index whatsoever, and the table of contents doesn't seem to have much to do with what one is trying to find a second time. There's a reason nVIDIA doesn't sell print copies of that text on Amazon; people would review it.

I love "Miss Fox's Class Goes Green". Miss Fox has a gentle way of teaching children to do the right thing. I appreciate the fact that this book teaches about making responsible choices and taking good care of planet earth. I love Miss Fox.

All the animal children looked VERY surprised when they saw Mrs. Fox driving to the school on her bicycle. She had a little basket in the front to carry her pocket book and whatever else she needed for school. Of course she had on her helmet. The children started to ask questions and wanted to know just why she wasn't driving her car. She said that "cars pollute the air" and she was only going to drive when necessary. "I'm going green." It sounded like something that the rest of the class would be interested in and they had a little discussion and decided to go for it . . . green that is. Mrs. Fox wrote some goals on the blackboard:1. Use less stuff-recycle2. Use less energy.3. Use less water.Some of the children joked around. "I can stop taking showers," said Frog. Squirrel claimed he could save paper by not doing his homework. After the silliness they got around to business and became more serious. They could turn off lights when leaving a room, sharpen crayons, take shorter showers, use heavier blankets instead of turning up the heat, have a toy exchange and use things like sneakers until they wore out. Squirrel really wanted to "Super-flash Bubble-soled Buzzard sneakers," but decided against it. Were Raccoon, Mouse, Frog, Squirrel, Bunny, Bear, Possum and the other kids at school really going to be able to go green?This is a great little tale to introduce the concept of environmental protection or the green movement to your own children or classroom. This book makes a serious issue fun, entertaining and instructive. The storyline was chipper and I enjoyed the way the classroom got together, both at home and at school, to achieve a goal. The artwork was very vibrant and the animal characters were very appealing. The end pages have many little suggestions about going green such as "Carry your lunch in a reusable bag or sack." If you are thinking of "going green" at home or school, this book would be a perfect one to introduce to your own youngster or classroom . . . that is if they aren't already trying to get you to go green!

I LOVE all of the Miss Fox series. Was so glad to see a Going Green book come out. And of course, it is FABULOUS. Miss Fox does it again by getting her class to Go Green with her. What a perfect Earth Day read for students. It has lots of information for kids on ways they can go green. It will spark ideas in kids on ways they can conserve, recycle, reuse etc etc.

Eileen Spinelli has written anaother meaningful story to share and inspire adults and children. We all know the importance of "going green" : to recycle, reuse, conserve, etc. In this story , Miss Fox inspires and problem solves with her students . She helps them brainstorm ways in which they can help planet Earth and the community they live in.I love the humor in this story. For example Frog says: "I can use less water . . .I can stop taking showers." And Squirrel says: "I know how to save paper. No more homework."The students find many ways to make a difference and you can see how proud they are of their efforts to "go green". I feel this is another exceptional story teachers and parents could add to their personal libraries and read to their young children.
