Although not evident from the title, this book is mainly about CUDA, NVIDIA's method for programming their GPUs, but the title is perhaps justified by the existence of chapters on half a dozen or so other packages for programming GPUs, including an important one on using GPUs on MPI lusters. Most of the examples are in C, but with a chapter on FORTRAN. As other reviewers have already mentioned, the book is either excessively wordy or wonderfully detailed, depending on your mode of learning. For me, it was too wordy: there were sometimes two or three pages to explain an algorithm that was immediately clear from the figure. I would add that the authors have a curious view of what readers might know or not know: they give a long explanation of IEEE floating-point formats, which I believe are well known among application programmers, but mention only in passing with no explanation such less well known concepts as atomic operations and Amdahl's law. Various generations of NVIDIA chips are mentioned by code names that are probably not familiar to those of us who just buy a graphics card, although an appendix at the end gives some details. All in all, I found this a very useful introduction to CUDA, and especially to problems of memory access management on GPU boards, which I knew nothing about beforehand. Nonetheless, it was clear that one would need access to the detailed library manuals and spec sheets for the particular chip one was using before undertaking a real coding project, as there seem to be rather significant differences between chips in how one might try to maximize efficient use of the multiple execution units, memory blocks, and different cache sizes on the different chips. I expect that to have life beyond the current generation of chips, an application would need to query the system for these properties and optimize accordingly at run time. The book has some hints on how to do this.

So much effort went into writing this text, but better guidance was needed. True, there are typos as many have said, but not as many as I find in most textbooks and research papers.Before I get started, I have one strong compliment for the text: exercises at the ends of the chapters, where they appear, are very well thought out and get right to the point.The worst part of this book is its index, which gets an unnegotiable F grade from me. So much is missing. Try looking for the gridDim built-in variable; it's not there. blockDim is, but not gridDim. Or look up "constant memory"; that's not there under "memory", "constant", or otherwise. In fact although most of parallel programming is about overcoming memory bottlenecks, the index doesn't say much about memory in general. Indexing books is very hard and is usually left to professional indexers; there really is such a trade. But for this book the authors needed to pay more attention to the end product.The overall arrangement is illogical, starting from an enormous abstraction and then adding detail. Better to begin with something small and concrete which can be understood, and build up.At several points a non-programmer was permitted to do the typing, which is like allowing a pilot to fly while waking out of general anesthesia. See Figure 10.4 at lines 1 and 5.Many concepts are never brought together in some kind of summary that one would ever turn to as a reference, such as special variables. One can also find seeming conflicts that need clarification, such as Table 5.1's "local" memory for automatic array variables that are "stored into the global memory" on the next page. Both turn out to be true, but the presentation is not ideal.References are sloppily missing in certain cases, such as ELLPACK on page 224.At several points the text completely derails with outrageous metaphors. For instance page 85, where the authors try to explain standard queries of an implementation's capabilities by informing us that "most American hotel rooms come with hair dryers". The illustration's purpose is to publish a thicker book that looks "more valuable", but the truth is that any programmer who read to page 85 knows that most libraries have functions for querying their parameters and limits. There's no need to digress into toothpaste in Asia.If you must take a course that is based on this text, things get worse for you: the authors made presentation slides, and you bear the risk that your instructor may use them in the classroom. These are not well thought out from either a clarity or instructional standpoint, and they are very cluttered with confusing details. One example is how tiled matrix multiplication is explained; one slide actually draws three 4x4 matrices with row, column, and matrix name (!!!) labels in every single cell, giving the poor class 3 x (4 x 4) x 3 = 144 extra trivialities to distract them on that slide alone.Another pedagogical problem with their slide example, which the book also mishandles, is that they've chosen to illustrate the use of submatrices by dividing a 4 x 4 problem into a 2 x 2 problem. Although this is the smallest case they could select, the difficulty is that the human brain comprehends these 2 x 2 divisions in terms of "corners" (top left, etc.) instead of columns and rows. The examples should have been 9 x 9 divided into 3 x 3.In fairness, Kirk and Hwu did not have the best of resources available to assemble this book from. nVIDIA's "CUDA C Programming Guide" has no index whatsoever, and the table of contents doesn't seem to have much to do with what one is trying to find a second time. There's a reason nVIDIA doesn't sell print copies of that text on Amazon; people would review it.

the content of the book is excellent but the prose and code are marred by numerous typos - a veritable horde of them. The illustrations in the print book are blurry but the kindle version is a little better. It is a shame that the effort of Drs. Kirk & Hwu are marred by poor editing and production

Like the authors, the book is clear, down to earth, willing to speak truth to power, and if you listen to them (read the book) you will do better science. A serially executing program is a not-too-special case of a massively parallel solution.Code samples and extensive graphics will help you on your transition. The history from an NVIDIA insider is fascinating, and the team used this material to teach people that have since done excelent work.

This book is quite useful in understanding CUDA fundamentals. But, buyer beware. If you are new to CUDA or C programming, you may find this book confusing, as typos run throughout. They are easy to pick out if you know basic CUDA syntax. If you do not, "CUDA by Example" is a better introduction.

I am teaching a Parallel Programming for Master students. The APIs I am teaching are MPI/CUDA/OpenMP these are enough for a student to grasp and appreciate parallel programming.For the CUDA course I have selected this book to start and fill in with material of other books. For instance when this books describes how CUDA maps to multidimension data like an image there should be an example. The best example is the julia example of the book CUDA by example of course modified so as to teach coalescing in the writes and what happens when DIM is not divisible by the number of threads.After two years I will be able to present the material I am teaching. I think this will be helpful.

I love "Miss Fox's Class Goes Green". Miss Fox has a gentle way of teaching children to do the right thing. I appreciate the fact that this book teaches about making responsible choices and taking good care of planet earth. I love Miss Fox.

All the animal children looked VERY surprised when they saw Mrs. Fox driving to the school on her bicycle. She had a little basket in the front to carry her pocket book and whatever else she needed for school. Of course she had on her helmet. The children started to ask questions and wanted to know just why she wasn't driving her car. She said that "cars pollute the air" and she was only going to drive when necessary. "I'm going green." It sounded like something that the rest of the class would be interested in and they had a little discussion and decided to go for it . . . green that is. Mrs. Fox wrote some goals on the blackboard:1. Use less stuff-recycle2. Use less energy.3. Use less water.Some of the children joked around. "I can stop taking showers," said Frog. Squirrel claimed he could save paper by not doing his homework. After the silliness they got around to business and became more serious. They could turn off lights when leaving a room, sharpen crayons, take shorter showers, use heavier blankets instead of turning up the heat, have a toy exchange and use things like sneakers until they wore out. Squirrel really wanted to "Super-flash Bubble-soled Buzzard sneakers," but decided against it. Were Raccoon, Mouse, Frog, Squirrel, Bunny, Bear, Possum and the other kids at school really going to be able to go green?This is a great little tale to introduce the concept of environmental protection or the green movement to your own children or classroom. This book makes a serious issue fun, entertaining and instructive. The storyline was chipper and I enjoyed the way the classroom got together, both at home and at school, to achieve a goal. The artwork was very vibrant and the animal characters were very appealing. The end pages have many little suggestions about going green such as "Carry your lunch in a reusable bag or sack." If you are thinking of "going green" at home or school, this book would be a perfect one to introduce to your own youngster or classroom . . . that is if they aren't already trying to get you to go green!

I LOVE all of the Miss Fox series. Was so glad to see a Going Green book come out. And of course, it is FABULOUS. Miss Fox does it again by getting her class to Go Green with her. What a perfect Earth Day read for students. It has lots of information for kids on ways they can go green. It will spark ideas in kids on ways they can conserve, recycle, reuse etc etc.

Eileen Spinelli has written anaother meaningful story to share and inspire adults and children. We all know the importance of "going green" : to recycle, reuse, conserve, etc. In this story , Miss Fox inspires and problem solves with her students . She helps them brainstorm ways in which they can help planet Earth and the community they live in.I love the humor in this story. For example Frog says: "I can use less water . . .I can stop taking showers." And Squirrel says: "I know how to save paper. And now on her birthday at this present time she had been mugged. What will have to happen for her to be able to let all of these bad things that had happened to her stop her from living her life? Will Miriam be willing to seek help for herself? Why was Miriam so protective of her daughter, Jessica? Well, from the story one will see how well she provides working at her Bakery shop along with her partner Patty -Lynn and this was mainly to support for her teenage daughter Jessica. Having a good friend who was her partner and her good friend Woody from back in the day was definitely one of the pluses Miriam did have in her life. I loved how Miriam thought she was going to be able to protect her child wanting her to go to a certain school [Holy Grace University], live at home and work for her at her bakery truly just not wanting Jessica to be to far away from her. Wow, Miriam may have had it all planned out but had she spoken to Jessica about any of these plans, so how will this come out for them? I will say that Miriam really thought she had it all worked out. I thought to myself we do things like this for our children wanting to protect them but yet not looking at the whole picture.But will this be enough as it seems like her daughter is giving her mother some problems when she found out what plans her mother had for her. We find Jessica definitely seeming to want to shut that down all of her mother's dreams. This story will really go into a lots of drama with her daughter and mother to the part that even when her friends tried to give Miriam advice she doesn't want to hear anything from them. Well, one can see which way the daughter was going so naturally bad things did happen. How will Miriam handle this big problem that her daughter is now into? Will Miriam seek help for herself due to the fact she really needed someone to talk and listen to. What will happen when Miriam is introduced to Carl? I will say at this part of the story I felt sorry for Woody because of how he had felt for so long about Miriam. The two had fallen out a few times in the story but I was glad to see them finally back talking with each other again. I will say Carl was quite a interesting person being blind. I really enjoyed this part of the read due to the fact I guess I had never really thought of all the problems a blind person would have as this story was so well presented to the reader by this author. I could definitely understand some of Carl's reasoning to why he thought about certain things as he did. I loved how Carl and his friend Paul conversed together. I want to think and believe as Carl had thought of his friend [Paul] in the end that all had been work out for him [his beliefs] in the end.I was glad that Miriam finally decided to tell Jessica about her father which should have been done so long ago. Finally seeing Miriam changing some of her ideas for the good was a real treat in the story and seeing Jessica growing up and taking on responsibility was wonderful. The was definitely one good read that will give one much thought long after the read.All of the characters were all well developed from Carl, Miriam, Woody, Patty, Lynn, Paul, Jessica, yes, even Tyrese, Carena, Lisa, Marlene, baby...Mary, Mason, Sheila and Tyrese's mom to name a few. There will be a few that may not be liked but over all well defined giving the reader quite a interesting read.Well, how will this story turn out for: Carl, Miriam and Jessica? Will there be a HEA? Well, to find out I will say you will just have to pick up the wonderful read of "Southern Comfort" and see just how well this author bring this story out so well to the reader. By the end of the story there will be definitely a thank you for all of the blessings that were received from this story.

Miriam has been haunted by the past when a rape took place that changed her life forever. Her 17 year old daughter, Jessica, has been brought up in girls' schools and Miriam has kept a tight rein on her fearing a repeat of what happened to her. When Miriam meets Carl who is blind, will he able to help her let go of control and trust God instead even when things go terribly wrong?I have enjoyed every book in this series that I have read so far. Dowdy always incorporates wonderful spiritual content without it ever feeling preachy. Her characters have depth and nuance that makes them entirely credible. I thoroughly enjoy Carl's character as he fought to be his own person rather than being identified as a stereotypical "blind person." His caring, support, and understanding for Miriam were so sweet even though his own self-confidence was shaky. I also liked how he stood firm in his faith again Paul, but then led him towards Christ. Miriam definitely had the mindset of a person who had been traumatized and didn't want her daughter to experience the same whereas Jessica was such a typical teenager with the "my mama don't know nothing" attitude. Secondary characters such as Woodie and Patty-Lynn made a well-rounded cast.Another very good bakery romance, and I look forward to reading the others that are planned.

I am completely in love with this book. It was so much more than a romance, that really gave this book something extra. I thought the book was more about the mother/daughter relationship between Miriam and Jessica. It was a great example of the sacrifices mother's make for their children, and also the depth of love a mother has for her child. Miriam tried so hard to give her daughter a better life than she had. It was her entire life's focus. Jessica never realized how much Miriam loved her and was willing to do anything for her, even after she made the biggest mistake of her life. Her mother was always there fighting for her. When Miriam met Carl and started to have feelings for him, she tried to avoid those feelings and refused to give in to them for so long. Poor Carl almost gave up, but thank goodness they finally worked out all of the many complications their relationship faced. There was so much more to this book that I just couldn't possibly go into all of the many components of this story. It was an amazing book.

Carl and Miriam seemed like polar opposites but fate kept throwing them together. Carl had so many self-esteem issues stemming from his blindness and Miriam kept burying the tragic pain of her past until she was forced to deal with it. Poor Jessica gravitated towards Tyrese because she was sick of her mom's overprotectiveness when she had never given her a previous reason for it. Paul, Carl's co-worker and best friend was a hopeless flirt and was forever trying to convince Carl to let him do a tarot reading but began to have an open mind towards faith with a little help from Carl. I loved how Miriam finally took a chance and opened up to Carl and ultimately to Jessica and began to heal and forgive and not let Carl push her away.'I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.'

Though this story has a developing romantic relationship in it, the dynamic between Miriam and her daughter, Jessica, is very prominent throughout this story. I found myself drawn into the relationship between the 2 and even found that I related to the daughter in some respects. I definitely recommend reading this as it also is woven with the wonderful redemption of the Lord.

I had to force myself to put this book down and go to bed. Once I started in, I couldn't put this book down. This is a soldier's story, not a history lesson. Anyone looking for a treatise on jungle warfare, or the conduct of the War in Burma will have to look elsewhere. This book tells the story of one young man's experience in Burma, the section, squad to American readers, he served with, how they lived, their interactions with each other, and sadly, how many of them died. This is an honest, up close and personal account of the face of war. There's no romance, no heroics, no holding forth on the virtues of the British soldier as opposed to the Japanese soldier, just a frank and unflinching look at what the author saw and experienced.This is a must read for anyone with any delusions of revisionist history of World War II in Asia.

I've long enjoyed Fraser's Flashman novels and his stories of life as a subaltern in the Second Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders immediately after the end of the Second World War. This wonderful book takes us into the war, and into the China-Burma-India Theatre, about which many Americans, including myself, know comparatively little.It's a complex book, certainly not glorifying war, but demonstrating how, as a crucible, the experience of war can shape a man. The writing has all of Fraser's well-known gifts: wit, fascinating characterizations, and wonderfully descriptive narratives of actual events. He ably explains the workings of a Section (Squad, in our army.) of British troops during the war. The reader meets his fellow soldiers, and suffers when, just as they are becoming known, they begin to be killed, either in action, or in one case through a horrible misadventure.Also valuable is Fraser's opinion that today's U.K. is not necessarily the U.K. that he and his mates fought for. He clearly disapproves of the direction in which the U.K. has been taken. He also has a thorough dislike of the modern penchant of the media for going to great lengths to discover the feelings of soldiers who return from action in modern theatres of war. He opines that he and his mates were fortunate at the end of WW II because at that time there were no counselors. He believes, and I don't necessarily disagree, that a person's feelings are private and that people are entitled to keep them to themselves. He posits that they are indeed better off if they do.I can't do this book justice in a review that is actually short enough to bother reading. All I know is that I'm a bit different for having read it. I also believe I now have a better understanding of my father, who fought as an infantryman at Leyte, Luzon, and Okinawa. For me, this was a very valuable read. For anyone who wishes to have a better understanding of the enlisted man's experience of combat, I highly recommend it.

This is a wonderful memoir of a young soldier fighting in the Burma campaign at the tail end of WW II. Of course, as someone who fell in love with the Flashman series of historical novels many decades ago, anything with Mr. Fraser's name on it will get my attention.My own father, now gone, was just about his age during the last year of the war in Europe. He arrived in Normandy early on D-Day, via a glider that landed in a flooded field. With the exception of himself and two others, everyone in the glider drowned. His war continued with from that point, to the day when he was wounded (for the 2nd time) towards the end of the Battle of the Bulge. Unlike Mr. Fraser, my father was never comfortable describing in any ordered way his experiences during that year. But I get the strong feeling that if he had been so inclined, and had the skill and insight that Mr. Fraser demonstrates in this book, he would have told a story much like the one presented here. I'm an old timer today, but I certainly feel privileged to have shared this story with Mr. Fraser

I thought this book was a very unusual and awesome look at what it is like to be a grunt in Burma. Loved that part. For me I would not have bought the book had I know there was so much 'dialect' writing of which I could hardly understand. Perhaps if you were Scottish, Irish or English it would be easier but for me (an American) it was very difficult to get though and understand what they were staying. In general I thought the author had a great sense of humor & I liked his plain spokeness. No apologies and good insights. I would have given it more stars but it was just too hard for me to make out the dialects. Bless these men, they really were great!

I bought this used. Came in decent quality for the price. Very informative and easy to follow instructions for making repairs.

Almost too thorough, sometimes I find myself going back and fourth between steps since the book tries to combine the steps for different model engines in one page (e.g. step 4a for the 4 cylinder, and see step 4b for the 6 cylinder.

I brought the manual as used because I wanted to look up the specifications when I replaced a new water pump, timing belt, oil cover gaskets, firing order, pan gasket and valve cover gaskets. It does helps me a lot to prevent crack the metal covering on the engine block. Thank you!

It is not the same book in the picture. Also, it is used and i ordered new. Also it is in BAD shape including engine oil stains. VERY unhappy.

When a person does all his own car repairs it is a good idea to get the book for that car and year. I'd recommend this book to anyone who needs it.
