Terry Pratchett was brilliant and the master of a fantasy sub-genre that probably belongs to him alone. Mort is a novel set in Discworld. The Discworld novels fall into different categories: Tiffany Aching, Rincewind, the three witches, Sam Vines and the guards, and Death. Each book focuses on one of them, although they cross over and pop up in each others' books all the time. It is best if you start from the beginning of a particular grouping and work your way through, otherwise you'll miss a lot of inside jokes, references, etc. There are charts on the internet that will show you the groupings. You can trust Terry Pratchett to not be too linear and to not be very predictable. Mort is an early novel of Death. Mort is a bumbling young adolescent of no particular talent when his father takes him to the job fair to find an apprenticeship. Just at the stroke of midnight, Death arrives to offer Mort the apprenticeship. Death lives with his man servant, his daughter, and Binky, an immensely powerful horse, at a compound of his own creation. Like all of the Discworld books, the tone is satirical and clever. This book did not make me laugh out loud like Wee Free Men, but it was amusing. Ankh Mopork is much the same (a city impossible to describe here). Mort is sincere but naïve. Death is suffering from burnout and mayhem ensues. Somehow, Terry Pratchett makes all the nonsense work. These books do not contain any scenes, language, or images that would rate even a PG-13 rating at the movies. If a reader does not have sufficient maturity, much of the book will be wasted, because you won’t get the jokes or understand the satire. I count myself lucky to still have so many novels of Discworld ahead of me.

Mort is an awkward young man. He’s not really good at anything. His dad isn’t even sure what to do with him. So he takes young Mort to a job fair in town with the hopes of passing him off to someone else. No one seems interested in choosing Mort as an apprentice until just before midnight. Someone on a white horse and wearing a black cape comes up and offers Mort a job. Mort’s father believes the position is for an undertaker; but in reality the anthropomorphic personification of “Death” himself offers young Mort a position as his apprentice. Thus begins a pretty darn funny adventure as Mort does his best (and continually fails) to learn to be “death”.I believe this is book four in Terry Pratchett’s “Diskworld” series. It was recommended to me by a friend and he assured me that I didn’t need to read the previous three books to be able to read this one. He was right. While it’s my understanding that “death” makes appearances in some of the other books, I was perfectly able to follow along in this one without any prior introduction to the series. The book is silly – downright ridiculous at times, but is genuinely funny. There are almost laugh out loud moments in the book and Pratchett does a good job of painting a Mort character that all of us can relate to at different points in our lives. The humor and style of the book is not something that I would probably choose to read all of the time, but served as a great “pallet cleanser” between more serious novels. I certainly did enjoy the story and wouldn’t hesitate to read Pratchett again when I’m in the mood for a good laugh. Well done.

Pratchett is one of the greatest writers of our time, maybe all time. Discworld is one of the most amazing, vibrant, and spellbinding fantasy worlds ever conceived. Each book adds another piece to the rich fabric of this imaginary landscape, yet they can be enjoyed in any order. I find my favorite characters to be the ones occupying whatever Pratchett book I'm reading at the moment. There is humor and purpose dripping from every line of text that graces a Pratchett novel. Not a single word is wasted, nor abused. His spirit lives on in each fantastic journey through the Discworld. May he rest in peace. There is no need to review this book alone. If you're looking for a cookie cutter fantasy novel, Terry Pratchett is not for you. If, however, you seek a more profound experience from your literature than no single book by Terry Pratchett will ever be enough. I have read these books many times over.

Every year since our twins with tiny we would wrap picture books and put them under the tree on Dec. 1 and they would unwrap one each night until Christmas Eve and we would read it before bed. A tradition they looked forward to each year. They are getting older now and the picture books are not as exciting, so we have adopted a new tradition in the same vein. We love the love create from this book. It's a bit cheesy, Death is one of our favorite characters and Pratchett is simply a priceless author. This is great! It has days, weeks, and months. Invaluable for calculating lead times. Also has useful information on the reverse as well as ability to calculate calendar dates for years in advance. Would be nice if it was a little smaller, its just a little too big to conveniently fit in my folio pad holder to carry around. Wish I'd treated myself to this little assistant earlier.

This book is so beautiful! I bought it for the skyline pattern, but the first pattern I made was the shawl that I changed into a baby blanket. It was a great first project to try C2C and nowI feel ready to tackle the skyline design after the holiday rush.

Love the book with the designs.The book offers diagrams but also in words. C2C diagrams are difficult to read for my brain. I tried different methods and they all failed. For C2C, I must have the design in words which is great.Not all designs come with a diagrams but they all come in words. The author explains how to read the graph but for many as far as I know, it doesn't set well with the brain.She explains how to do crochet C2C but also how ro use bobbins.I will recommend this book even for beginners, give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

As many C2C blankets as I have made, I still learned from this handy to have reference book.

This book is exactly what I have been hoping for. The instructions are clear and concise, the photographs show great detail to illustrate the instructions, and the color graphs give a good visual overview. This book is helpful both for people who prefer to follow written instructions (me) and those who prefer to follow graphs.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn this technique, and because I have worked several of the patterns written by this author, I knew it would be clear and easy to understand. They really are! Thank you for all the beautiful photos and hard work on these modern patterns.

This is better than your average thesaurus. It also goes into related words and has, I think, words that are harder to come across in more recent thesauruses. Great addition to any wordsmith's reference set.

Having been raised on Roget's Thesaurus (and various interpretations thereof), I have seen books that can be too "academic" and difficult to use. I have also seen books that are too dumbed-down and lacking in synonyms or editorial acumen. I forget how I "got onto" Sisson's Synonyms. I think that I first found one in a bookstore, when looking for a gift for my creative, grown son... and was so impressed that, after giving Jude his gift, I searched online and found this personal copy for myself. Even though it is "just a reference book," it is an invaluable resource that is also a simply a fun book to find an excuse to utilize... or to simply dabble in. It has enough selections so that I need not be limited only with finding the "right" word; I can find "my" word. It is always at arm's reach.

Probably my fifth sisson’s I have given as a gift. My go to book at work & home. Forget the standard synonym & antonyms in Word-this is that on steroids.

For anyone doing a considerable amount of writing this is a "must have" reference book. The original copy I had dated back to the 1960's. During several moves my original was lost or misplaced. I'm still writing and the need for this desktop reference book is needed as much as it ever was. Purchasing the replacement text from Amazon.com was a pleasant experience and I'm certainly delighted to be re-united with an 'old friend.'

I am a professional fiction writer. I purchased this book decades ago, back in the day when people actually went to book stores and bought real physical books. I have used it constantly since then. Literally every time I have some writing to do, this now-battered and somewhat tattered book is the only one on my desk. I have since longed for it in hard back, and in Kindle versions, but especially I wish that this book came in a phone app like other thesauruses because this is the only synonym locator that I will use. If you need a very technical, modern-day, dry, uncreative thesaurus which is overly bulky get Roget's... if you need a brilliantly creative, intuitive, smart, and slender thesaurus full of only the most interesting words (many of which are no longer used in common speech, a major plus for those who are tired of the Orwellian newspeak pushed on us these days), get Sisson's. It doesn't contain every word in the dictionary, only the useful ones -- and the entries are genius. Mixed together are not just strict synonyms which mean exactly (or almost exactly) the same thing, but variations on the parent word which fire the imagination and will get your writer's juices flowing. This isn't just a thesaurus, it's a muse.

I bought this book because it clearly stated that it has tabs and it does not. I love how big it is but hate the fact that it doesn't have tabs.

DOES NOT HAVE TABS!!! The interior pages do not match the theme of the front which are beautiful butterflies and wood grain. Inside, there are black modern geometric lines and squiggles. I was expecting more butterflies. It’s also larger than I expected, but I may have missed that in the specifications. I also feel that the manufacturer could improve it by making it spiral bound. I took a chance buying this without seeing inside pictures because there weren’t any. Wish I hadn’t. Hope my pictures will help someone else make an informed decision.

A little disappointed Contains to much information for each address. Room for only about 10 addresses. No tabs..

I really like the large print of this address book and the cover image is cute. However, the cover had a weird texture to it that felt dirty. The inside doesn't have a clear division in between names either so the information on the whole page kind of blends together. Overall, this address book is okay.

It was so flimsy.The cover was too thin. I'll keep it, but would warn others not to buy it. I exprcted much better quality.

If you have a special situation such as being a veteran or other situation, then this book may be beneficial. The document from HRS called Medicare and You I believe is just as good or better and it is free. Seems like about 20% of the book is worthwhile and the rest is for these special situations which I did not need. Get the free document first, then decide if you need additional information. The free document has more current info as well, while the book is several years old, and item can change annually.

I'm a physician and bought this for my parents who are shopping for Medicare plans. They resented the implication that they're dummies, but in the end begrudgingly had to admit this turned out to be a very useful book. It far surpassed any online resource we could find, most of which were either far too simple or far too dense. In contrast, this book actually walked my parents through every step of the process, skillfully anticipating points of confusion that might arise along the way and ultimately leaving no question unanswered. The author is very good at simplifying confusing aspects of the medicare system without dumbing them down (despite the title!). I learned a lot from this book myself - as a physician I have a general sense of how medicare works but when my parents started asking very specific questions I realized I didn't know nearly as much as I should. Definitely recommended!

This is an excellent book. I first borrowed it from my library because I will be eligible for Medicare this year. I found it to be such an excellent source of reference on Medicare, that I had to buy one for my own, so I ordered it from Amazon. The book explains EVERYTHING in very easy-to-understand terms. It is not just a "read before you do it" book but one I expect I will be referencing as long as I am on Medicare. Highly recommend!

I bought this book because AARP recommends it. If you buy only one "how to" book on Medicare, this is the book. It has absolutely everything you need to know, in a format that is easy to follow and well organized. There are some truly important deadlines that are crucial to not miss when you are signing up for Medicare or you can suffer lifetime surcharges. This book will help you to cross every "T" and dot every "I" if you read it carefully.Highly recommended.

Turning 65 later this year, started getting bombarded with mailers about medicare options and plans and seminars. Figured I better learn this stuff so I don't get screwed. Wow, there is so much to learn, so many twists and turns, angles... over 60 plans. Mindboggling. I've been going to several seminars given by different people for different perspectives and am finally getting the hang of it. Strongly suggest you go plus find one-on-one independent insurance agents to answer your questions, and there will be many. Seminars have so many people that it's hard to get all your questions answered, plus the more you study the medicare.gov website the more questions you have. your local hospital should have a medicare expert on staff with whom you can make an appointment to learn more, ask questions. Those are usually free.Now onto the book. Ran into a lady at one of the seminars who swore by it... said it's fantastic, answers all your questions. So I bought it and she was so right. I read a chapter every night, highlight stuff important to me, postit pages I want to return to... it is explained so well and in laymen's terms. I recommend this book to all on the path to 65 and having to learn about Medicare coverage. If you don't learn it, you could get screwed as they will assign a plan to you if you don't pick one. The one they choose for you may not fit your medical needs. So it's super important to learn. Start learning early so it's not so overwhelming. There are also many ways to cut your costs for medicare such as monthly premiums, prescriptions, deductibles and co-pays. If saving money is a concern, this book helps you figure the ins and outs of the system with discounts, how you quality, getting free assistance, etc. I am so so happy I bought this. Still working on it but won't have to make a decision until June. Well worth the investment now and for the next few years.

This book definately spells out what medicare does. Confusing at times but everything associated with governmental regulation confusing. The author is thorough with explanations and I recommend this book for everyone who is getting to Medicare age. I am a RN and this book was very informative to the lay person.

This is a most informative book. It covers everything you need to know about Medicare. Retired military will be interested in the section which explains how Tricare for Life interacts with Medicare. I had very specific questions, such as how and when should I apply for Medicare, how I pay the premiums, and whether I should choose original Medicare or a Medicare advantage plan. This book answered all my questions and explained it all in easy to understand language. I recommend Medicare for Dummies to anyone who will soon be covered by Medicare.

Very thorough, but also clear (unlike everything else I've read so far). I finally feel like I understand Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medigap, what's covered and what's not. Also very complete info for where to go when there's a problem. Worth every dime.

It is a fast read when you need to relax, but it could have been longer. Generally I love all the Angel Paws stories that were published this far.

This is a precious story about a rescue dog. Although to be honest it is hard to tell who rescued whom: the dog or her new owner.Michael Gold had grown up imagining himself as an athlete, and as an adult he was always running. So his friends kept telling him he needed a dog. But truth be told, he was looking for a woman - not a dog.However, none of the women he met (and in his job there were plenty of them) shared his interest in the outdoors. When he wasn't working, he craved nature and had to follow her call. So he finally broke down and went to the shelter looking for a dog.As soon as Michael looked into her eyes he knew there was something special there. "Her name's Silver." Seriously? Silver? And Michael Gold? Must be fate.But when Michael tossed her a ball, Silver ignored it. She wanted something in the treasure box, and she pawed and scratched at it until he opened it. Then Michael watched in amazement as Silver dug through all the toys, pushing each aside until she found her prize: the frisbee.Michael tossed the frisbee into the air again and again, watching Silver fly through the air as if she were born for this. And each time she returned it, there was such an intensity in those pale, piercing eyes!Michael was hooked! Fate was correct: this dog and this man were destined to be together. That was glaringly obvious!YES! "I'll take her!" Slow down, Michael! Not so fast there, buddy!Who knew you had to be "checked out" before you could adopt a dog from the shelter? Guess it is not " glaringly obvious" to them that the two of you belong together after all!But it is not long before Silver and Gold ARE a family, and they are in the great outdoors doing what they do: enjoying the trails, playing with that frisbee, and even making new friends along the way.And making friends along the way is a good thing: never know when you may need one to dial 9-1-1 and save your life. Then again, the friend would never have known you needed help had good old Silver not tracked her down and led her to you! (Turns out to be a good thing for Michael that Silver also happened to be a Border Collie - a fact which had meant nothing to him when he was given the information but which very well might have saved his life before the story ended!)You are going to have to read this short story for yourself to find out what happened to Michael and what Silver did to save him. But trust me when I say that both of them were richly blessed when they found one another.An amazing story suitable for everyone. Would even be great to read to the kids! And if you like dog stories, you really don't want to miss this one.

Silver and Gold is a very sweet short story. Fate plays a pretty big role in this book, and Ms. Taylor definitely knows the feeling of when a dog and a human are meant to be.This story is written in three different point-of-views, including the Border Collie's. It's a nice break from the constant "main character," so it feels as though you get to know the characters individually, instead of just from the main person (or dog's) perspective.This book is aimed more at older children and adults, just because there's the slightest hint of romance (nothing bad), and two of the three narrators talk about their struggle with dating, finding the right person, etc.Overall, this book deserves five stars. It's a nice, heartwarming short story. Ms. Taylor, please keep doing what you're doing!<3 <3

I read this expecting a novel and was shocked when I turned a page and read “about the author”. It is a nice story, however. I liked the characters and the description of the mountains near Seattle. I actually predicted the storyline, but still found it enjoyable and well written.

The plot was great, the characters well developed and the various situations were believable and engaging. The spelling and grammar errors were nonexistent, which is a major plus,as I'm at grammar and spelling Nazi (I blame my mom for this tendency...and thank goodness for her) The only issue I have is that I begin to care about the characters and get into the story.....and....snap! It's over. Too short. Otherwise it was wonderful.

A great short story about a man's love for his dog. Border Collies are one of my favorite breeds of dogs, and I was so glad, that this book did a great job, showing the temperament of the breed, and showed, how smart they can be. I think, any dog lover, especially, Border Collie lovers, well enjoy reading this short story.

We are real buds . I loved how Silver took charge of his wounded owner and got help .. Dogs have a way of knowing the situation isn't,t right and they act. If I,m sick Tex doesn't,t leave my side . They are worth all it takes to love one. Walks ,food , snackes, etc.
