This was so interesting to compare the art work of Beatrix Potter - very little 'fluff', while the Jill Barklem's mice live in a 'country kitchen' style with very little empty spots. Very busy but exciting to see what can be discovered in her drawings.

The next two will be Adam Segal's "The Hacked World Order" and Thomas Davenport's and Julia Kirby's "Only Humans Need Apply." I will review these books as I finish them.Professor Floridi explores information in its various forms - largely digital, but also analogue, quantum, genetic, biological systems, economic (with a brief exposure to game theory) and the ethics of information. Claude Shannon plays an early, and important, role in the development of the mathematical theory of communication. But, if you experience an involuntary cautionary response to the word "math," don't worry, the book doesn't contain much of it. I wish that the book included a little more of the math underlying Claude Shannon's theory of communication, but perhaps Professor Floridi realized that this would be too much for a reader such as me.The book provides a useful overview of the field. Some of the observations will seem self-evident and little more than common sense. Some I had not encountered before such as "information minus meaning equals data" or said another way "data plus meaning equals information." What algorithms or models that one uses to impose meaning on data is left to the reader.Igave the book 4 stars and not 5 because of his approach to the ethics of information. Some of the ethics arise from law, which seemed relatively unremarkable. However, he also make the claim that information embodied, for example, in paintings or the environment seem to have ethical rights. The Professor and I could find common ground in agreeing that defacing the Mona Lisa or dumping harmful chemicals into streams and rivers is a very bad idea. I am not sure that I am ready to go as far as he does in extending the concept of independent ethical rights.The book served the purpose that I described above. Much of the book visited areas with which I had prior familiarity and some of it explored new territory. I occasionally had to review portions of the book to draw out its meaning. It provided a useful foundation for my investigation of the current status of the Information Age. I recommend it.

I'm reading this as a textbook for college, and it's easily my favorite book i've been assigned in a few years. The language is very easy to understand, and I'm learning so much about evaluation. The reading is very easy without being too fluffy, and it has a great balance between presenting theory and very actionable steps. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about evaluation.

I had to get this book for a class. The only time I actually used it was when I was forced to reference it in a discussion once or twice. There are books that cover the same material clearly and more thoroughly than this- it is a pain to read and understand the simple concepts covered due to the poor composition of this text.

Interesting look at evaluation in organizations. Super informative.

I took Hallie Preskill's class on Evaluation and she was excellent. This is an excellent book.

For those interested in program evaluations this is a must have.

This book was originally a requirement for my course, but as I used it, I found it was well organized and very helpful for program evaluation.

This book is the text for a required course. I find myself reading it and referring to it more often than textbooks for other classes. Easy reading and, to my surprise, it holds my interest.

About the Author

John S. Newman is Charles W. Tobias Chair of Electrochemistry, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), USA. Before joining UC Berkeley, he was a senior scientist and principal investigator at the Energy Technologies Area (ETA), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California, USA. He received his BS degree from Northwestern University, Illinois, USA, and MS degree and PhD from UC Berkeley. He has been a recipient of the Onsager Professorship, 2002, of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway. His current research focus is on analysis and design of electrochemical systems, with batteries and fuel cells receiving the most attention. He is the author of over 300 technical publications, numerous plenary and invited lectures, and the book Electrochemical Systems. Vincent S. Battaglia is a research scientist and group lead of Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Division of ETA. He received his BS degree in chemical engineering from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA, and his MS degree and PhD in chemical engineering from UC Berkeley. He joined Argonne National Laboratory, Washington, DC, as a postdoctoral fellow and was later appointed as a chemical engineer, then technical coordinator for DOC PNGV office and coordinator of DOE VTO Battery Research there. He specializes in electrochemical energy storage and conversion and has received the Pacesetter Award from Argonne National Laboratory, the DOE R&D Award, the 2013 R&D 100 Award, and the FMC Corporation external research collaboration award.

I own a lot of books of this genre. This one is so so. I wanted to love it. They definitely are used one of the best shots as the cover

This book provides inspiration for my new home. The books contains photographs of homes that have been rescued from neglect, and serves as an inspiration for those of us who allow homes to speak to us.Although my home is not as grand as many of those pictured, we love watching the transformation from 80's ranch (with some rather odd renovations and add-ons) to our dream home.The book is kept open, on our entry table.

An excellent and comprehensive overview of the development of housing styles in California between 1830 and 1930. Very good choices in lesser known homes to demonstrate the stylistic influences among the upper middle class and the early days of California before the Mid-Century boom.

excellent choices of homes to illustrate the traditions in California architecture. Concise reviews of each home with superb photographs. This is a great book to supplement all other texts on California's special houses. It is definitely one I will use to reference many times over.

Love the beautiful photos in this book. Really looks like California, and we've found a couple of inspirations for our own home.

This book is a superb documentation of California architecture from the early adobes to the Spanish Colonial revivals of the 1920's and 30's. It illustrates how these houses adapt to our modern way of life and can still retain their original charm and details. Each home is beautifully furnished and accessorized with taste that compliments the style of the house. The author did a wonderful job of selecting an interesting group of homes that exemplify the differnt periods throughout the years. The photographs are magnificent and each one is a joy to view.

Very well done! Great photography!

Dated, the one great picture must be the cover. Wouldn't recomend buying, go to the library, you might only want to look at it once.
