This is by no means a Bible to me. Too much "words" not enough illustrations. Lousy reference for coloring pencils.

Making art has been one o the greatest passions of my lifetime. I have had a formal art education (BA - Fine Arts) and, like most artists, hobbyists or professional, I have learned and developed most of my technique through practice and a lot of trial and error. A lot of practice. A lot pf trial. And a lot of error! As happens to many people, life got in the way over the years, and my focus on making art has gone through many shifts. But recent changes have brought me back to what used to be my medium of choice, colored pencil drawing. As with any discipline, I was feeling a bit rusty around the edges, and the aspects of this particular medium (and of drawing in general) where I was not proficient were even more painfully obvious to me, now that I was "restarting"...While browsing online, I discovered this book and read some really positive reviews. I was intrigued to read that the author favored Prismacolor pencils (one of the two brands I prefer - the other is Lyra) and I was very impressed by the ultra realism of the cover and the drawings I saw in the previews. I also liked the fact that it said Colored Pencil PAINTING, because I have always thought the style and technique I favor - a heavy, opaque coloring, rather than a soft sketchy style - was more akin to painting than the drawing/sketching that most people think of when they think of colored pencils. I knew that when I was last heavily involved in this medium, a good 25 or so years ago, this style or approach, and the colored pencil medium in general was still considered a relatively new medium (in the general scheme of artist's media through the ages) and that people had been experimenting and pushing the techinique envelope, and new products had been developing as well. So when I saw that there were several used copies of this book available, I thought I would give it a chance, surely there would be something between the covers for me.What a huge, happy surprise awaited me when the package arrived! Not only does this book cover the ultrarealistic effects and luminous colors that are the author's forte, it also gives a good overview of principles of design, composition, color theory, fundamentals of light, shading and shadows, and other topics that are applicable to just about all visual art media, not just colored pencil. It even contains a different approach tto color theory than what I had been taught all those many years ago, and that quickly deepened my understanding of layering and blending colors in a way that years of trial and error (and yes, more error) hadn't accomplished.The focus of the book, as promised by the title, is on colored pencil drawing (painting), specifically with "dry" wax or oil based pencils (not watercolor pencils) So naturally a lot of pages are devoted to materials, media, supplies and tools. It covers the difference and similarities between wax and oil based pencils and specific brands thereof - including hardness, blendability, color range, and the "feel" of the pencil on the page plus an appendix with charts of all the major manufacturers' colored pencils and their ratings for lightfastness. It also explains the pros and cons of different types and weights of paper, even mentioning some by brand. Erasers and erasing technique, blending//burnishing and the use of solvents are covered. Just about anything you need to know about stocking and setting up your studio to enable you to use this medium to its maximum potential can be found in this book. No matter what your level of experience and expertise, you are bound to find something in the tools and techniques section of this book to make you say "wow! I did not know that!"And finally, we get to one of the main objectives of this book - creating textures and surfaces. Step by step, section by section it covers the techniques and "tricks" for rendering various surface and background textures: greenery, flowers, fruits and vegetables, water, ice, fire, wood, metal, pearls, cut crystal, various fabrics, all covered step by step. This is followed by an introduction to practicing with simple still lifes, one of the most accessible subjects and an excellent study in texture, color, light and composition. The book ends with a series of exercises in technique -- single object studies from start to finish, each featuring a different type of surface texture.This book is an essential in the library of anyone who is interested in making art with colored pencils. It doesn't specifically cover some of the more common subjects -- landscapes, portraits, etc, but gives you the building blocks for the solid foundation you will need even when taking on such subjects. I am sure that I will return to it over and over for reference, and look forward to deepening and expanding my understanding of the medium, and to honing my technique. With this book, and more practice (and I am sure more trial and lots of error) I hope to tackle some of those "weak points" that have perplexed me since I first put pencil to paper, which will greatly improve my enjoyment of the medium that I love.

This book is so helpful. I've completed many of the projects in there with what I believe to be successful. Alyonya nickels on is such a great colored pencil artist. She is bringing clout to the world of colored pencil paintings. Unfortunately I can't seem to locate the book with those projects in it. I do however have two to show for now. I'll update the pics asap when I locate my other book. The one is a pair of marbles and the other is a swatch of denim. (Hopefully you can see that without my help) also I included a sample of a crystal candle stick, a leaf with a water droplet or two, pears, an apple, a brass pitcher, we'll you can tell what they all are except maybe red , yellow and blue peppermill.

If you're an intermediate or advanced artist with colored pencil experience this is a good book.If you're new to colored pencils like I am this is not the right book for you. It starts out covering a lot of things as if you have never used colored pencils, then moves onto advanced topics.What bothers me is the book title and description saying: `incredible realism- with simple you-can-do-it-processes!'. Which is very misleading. Same thing when you look inside the book and see it starting with basics like colored pencil choices and paper choices. I assumed that it was going to progress from the very basics all the way through.The highest rated 5-star review is titled: `Great for beginner to expert' and says: `If you have no experience with colored pencils or colored pencil realism, this book will take you from total beginner to gallery level brilliant hyper-realism'.Almost every example goes something like this: I layered black, blue, red and green on the background and used yellow, pink, etc on the light areas. And it shows one small photo of the drawing. Then I applied a solvent and touched up areas. Then showing a beautiful completed photo. I would have appreciated to see way more steps and photos.If you're a beginner I would recommend to start drawing and watching online tutorial videos. With the videos you can watch the artist drawing and pause the video while trying to recreate what they are doing. Once you understand color better and how to make decent looking drawings then look into this book.I don't know who would disagree with me about that. You should be able to draw a decent drawing with colored pencils BEFORE you try to create ultra realistic effects. You need a lot of experience drawing and working with colors and so much else to create drawings that look ultra realistic. It's not just a matter of following along with the 'simple you-can-do-it-processes' in this book.A more accurate title would be `advanced colored pencil techniques'.

While there is some good helpful information in this book, it goes a bit overboard on the testing aspects, i.e. heart scans CT scans, advanced lipids etc and the list goes on. But then again, it's written by a cardiologist. I think the aspects of the diet are fundamentally good but personally feel the new gold standard title on heart health should be "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" by Caldwell Esselstyn. It was absolutely the best of all of those I've read. I did learn some things reading this but I would alert the reader to take some of it with a grain of salt. There are simply too many tests recommended and one probably does not need all of these tests. My belief is that if you consume the right foods, you probably won't need all of those tests. In a whole food plant based diet, you'll be healing your arteries and removing inflammation at the same time, so there should not be any need for a lot of these tests if the diet aspect is in place. I'm glad I bought the kindle version for $2.10 as I wouldn't pay much more for it.

If you have a health problem, particularly your heart, you have got to read this book. Turn back time if you make the commitment and follow through. You can be a healthier you. You can live healthy and be healthy without starving yourself or being on some ultra regimented diet/exercise program. Down to earth, realistic and doable.

This book changed my life! Being on the north side of 60, I had accumulated many bad eating habits and with a family history of heart disease I knew I was living with a short fuse. After reading "The South Beach Heart Program" I've lose nearly 20 pounds (and never remember really being hungry) and my blood work hasn't looked this good in about 30 years. Thank you Dr. Agatston.

I bought this book a month or so ago. No book (even the South Beach Diet book) has had more impact on my life, than this one. First, it made me stop and think of the abuse I have been inflicting on my body for so many years. Second, scared me into doing something about it. Thus I have been diligent following both the South Beach Diet, and starting an exercise plan I can follow and live with. The book is almost like a textbook, but with language anyone can follow. There are a wide variety of tests we need to have run to know where we stand with heart disease, diabetes, etc. And Dr. Agatston spells it all out for the lay person to understand and accomplish. This is a book that everyone who cares about living to a ripe old age should read. And you should wait till you're 50 to read it. Buy it now!! Truly, this 4-Step Plan may save your life.

Let me sum up this book in one word - FABULOUS. Dr. Agatston gets it RIGHT, and no body else has come close. The amount of incorrect information that millions of Americans are receiving about heart disease from the mass media is shocking. Very few people are doing more than ten percent of what they need to do to prevent falling victim to this COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE DISEASE.Most readers will read Dr. Agatston's book because he is the author of the wildly popular South Beach Diet, but this is a great standalone book. This is the book that the good Doctor could have written first, because he is a MASTER of heart disease. He is the creator of the Agatston scoring system, which is utilized when one has a heart scan.Maybe you haven't heard of a heart scan? Dr. Agatston talks about the new heart scanners that are available in his book. The modern heart scan which is non invasive, and takes only a couple of minutes to perform is the device that will probably revolutionize heart disease care in the next ten years. At the same time very few doctors in the United States are recommending that their patients get a heart scan.The reason is that doctors, like most of us are creatures of habit. They are also employing a business model that they don't want to change. Read Dr. Agatston's book, and you will realize that only through a painless, quick heart scan can you detect if you truly have heart disease. Oh yes, you can also detect heart disease through an $8,000 angiogram, but no insurance company will pick that up unless you have SYMPTOMS. You don't want to wait to have heart symptoms before confirming you have heart disease.One more thing you need to know and the book is clear on this point. If you have successfully passed a treadmill test, you could STILL have heart disease that is about to deliver a massive heart attack to you. The reason is that most doctors still hold to a "Plumbers view" of heart disease learned in medical school.They believe incorrectly that heart disease is a gradual build-up of a blockage(s) until the blockage completely blocks off the artery, and a heart attack ensues. We know now that this is only true for a minority of heart attacks. The treadmill test can only pick up blockages of 70% or more. The vast majority of heart attacks are resulting from blockages of 15% to 25%. These blockages have soft fibrous caps that suddenly ERUPT. A blood clot forms, and SCABS OVER the eruption, blocking the passageway, and BINGO, you have a massive heart attack.Most doctors do not understand this modern theory of heart disease, which is about 4 years old. They are still adhering to the plumbers' model, ordering treadmill a test, when they should be ordering heart scans. When you then pass the treadmill test because you don't have a 70% blockage anywhere in your system, they pronounce you fit and send you home with flying colors. Meanwhile, you could have scores of 15% or 20% blockages, be a walking time bomb, and no one is intervening.Dr. Agatston also does a fabulous job at clarifying the issue of Cholesterol. This chemical is vital to living. Our cells could not live without Cholesterol. The problem is that our bodies get too much Cholesterol with the modern diet. Our evolution is still based on the nomadic existence of millions of years of living in warm climates, with tall grasses, and a hunter, gatherer's instincts. Our modern diet produces, and allows us to inject way more Cholesterol than we need to live.What the Doctor does so well is tell you that it's not your Cholesterol SCORE that matters, but your Cholesterol SIZE that matters. It's also the type of Cholesterol that you have that matters. As they said about Godzilla, SIZE DOES MATTER. Dr. Agatston understands and explains the importance of the different types of Cholesterol particles. Once you GET IT, it will radically change your understanding of what you have to do. There are good types and bad types of Cholesterol and it's all covered in an easy to understand manner.Most doctors when they test you will not specify PARTICLE SIZE and TYPE. Your test comes back with a Total Cholesterol number, and you think you're home free. In reality you might have progressive heart disease. It's all in the book, and if you even think you have a remote possibility of heart disease, you need to be AWARE of these ideas.When you are dealing with heart disease, the patient needs to be INFORMED. An informed patient gets better care and better outcomes than a patient that says to the doctor FIX ME. There are also those patients who don't want to know about their disease, and that's not the way to go.I have read Dr. Agatston's book thoroughly, and have compared it to just about everything else on the market that's out there. It compares very favorably. He's a good writer, and the book was not ghost written for him. There are a number of books on this subject where the big guy on the cover is NOT writing the book. Medical residents, and research associates are writing them. Is this necessarily bad?If you are paying for a big name doctor to write a heart book, you want the big name doctor to have written that book. Do you want to read a book by a famous doctor on the cover, who than has a 27-year-old resident write it for him, or do you want to read the REAL THING? If you read the South Beach Diet you will absolutely love this book. While it touches on some of the principles of the diet, it has much more to offer. The writing style is easy to follow and very informative and the book is loaded with practical information. If you are concerned about your heart health, this book is a must read. The book has motivated me to speak to my doctor and medication and other treatments, to exercies more and eat better and healthier foods. The author is very inspiring to read as he was in the Sough Beach Diet as well. Dr. Agatston seems very well informed, educated and highly experienced in heart health matters. This bood has excellent medical advice and lifestyle recomendations to can be easily attained by all. Read this book and you too may live a longer and more productive, healthier and happier life.

Positives: delicious, nutritious food. Never felt hungry through a year of using the recipes and menus. That was five years ago and 50 pounds ago. The 50 have stayed off because I/we still eat the same way, and always will. Negatives: preparation of many recipes takes a LOT of time and access to a few ingredients that are hard to find in a small town grocery store. This would be a TERRIFIC diet if only one had someone to prepare all this food for you. Still the best diet out there; it works and it changes the way you will eat and think about food for the rest of your life.

Excellent book for the young kids to learn about 911. Chocked full of facts & sensitive explanations of that horrible day. Recommended. Well written for an emotional topic.

Mr. Frank has swallowed the whole barrel of government Kool Aid. He cites no evidence linking Osama bin Laden to the crimes of 9/11, because there is none. He tells the children who are his main intended readership that certain Arabs planned and coreographed 9/11 when there have never been any criminal indictments or trials to prove that premise, and so, without even any evidence of that, we cannot infer as much and still remain faithful to our creed demanding due process and presuming innocence until guilt has been proven -- and here, it hasn't even been formally charged! And, there are other suspicions, actually backed by LOTS OF evidence, as to who really planned and carried out 9/11. Are we, of all people, not concerned to follow the evidence when a crime (especially a horrible mass murder) has been committed in our midst? Mitch Frank's "blame the Arabs" refrain is not the right answer, and ought not be urged on America's children!

As a known devourer of historical romance, it's surprising I've delayed on reading Cynster Book One for so long since I've heard rave reviews for about ten years. I am adamant about reading series books in a row and I believe I read the back cover description several times and decided The Devil's Bride is not for me. I avoid governess-themed historical romances like the plague... it's just about my least favorite trope next to mistress stories. After a sad dry spell of disappointing romances I decided to give this book a whirl regardless of my distaste for the governess angle. To my delight, the book cover description was pretty inaccurate. Honoria, our heroine, is only a governess in history, and we are spared the twee moments that I dread as it never becomes a part of the actual story. WHEW! Yeah!So then I got into the swing of the actual story which... to my delight... I loved! Top notch writing with well-researched, non-anachronistic prose, phrases and traditions. A spunky (only slightly annoying heroine) in the form of Honoria and a brooding, possessive, tall-dark-and-handsome duke named Devil. Yes please... I'll even take seconds! My delight in this writing style has decided that I must read the rest of the series. But before we do that we must review The Devil's Bride, and all that she was:Five Star Review:I already expressed my delight in the accurate and beautiful writing, though it alone is worth a solid five stars, regardless of plot… but I digress. Moving onto the actual storyline and characters I would like to focus on the five star material without giving away spoilers.Devil, as our duke, is the perfect possessive, alpha male that arouses my reader’s mind. He is simply a delight – arrogant, gorgeous, haughty, proud and totally obsessed with the heroine. Some of those qualities can be a negative of course… but Devil is ALSO sweet, thoughtful, patient, romantic and a good listener. He has a temper but he communicates. Thank goodness this allows no “big misunderstanding” to pollute the plotline. I found Devil to be nearly perfect as a hero… as he is rational with his possessiveness and he is so very adoring of the heroine. There were parts in this story I nearly cheered at, as it’s been so long since I read a book in which the hero and heroine actually talk and learn about each other and, for goodness sakes, listen and trust without jumping to conclusions.There were at least three parts I read several times over, I enjoyed them so much. That’s rare… so automatically the author got added to my read list. I try not to spoil such pleasures, but I will mention the word waltz… while I swoon. I was also pretty darn charmed with the entire intro of this story… and I couldn’t hold back my laughter during plenty of scenes.Great side characters, a delicious brooding six pack of gorgeous men (looking forward to all of their stories – the glimpses I got in this one were just stunning) and delightful settings made this one quite captivating. The beginning of this novel, say the first hundred pages, was pretty spectacular. The last one hundred pages were too. Once our heroine decides she will return the love of the hero, things get really exciting and the story returns back to its origins… a light murder mystery type plotline which improves things.Two Star Review:Our heroine Honoria is definitely slightly annoying. She holds to her guns with the I-will-never-marry trope just about three beats too long. Just when it becomes utterly ridiculous, the author finally allows the heroine to “give in” to our adoring duke. Unfortunately, it’s rather sudden and a little silly. Continuing on with the heroine as a two star character, she is rather daft at times – too bullheaded and stubborn for my liking. I really can’t stand a heroine who gets herself into mortal danger to make a point that she’s intelligent… it’s of course the opposite of intelligent to get oneself into scrapes that could cost yourself your own life or the life of someone you love. Fortunately, this two star stuff is not nearly as bad as some books I’ve read in which this character type destroys the story and the romance. Honoria has a lot of good qualities and moments in which she gets to redeem herself and she won me over every time she made me angry. So I forgave her time and time again… much like Devil did. She also does have a couple great moments in which to shine.The middle hundred pages of this novel slow down a great deal and got a little sluggish to get through. I can’t really stomach a back and forth like Honoria and Devil began to endure. You will marry me! No, I won’t! But luckily that doesn’t last TOO long. A couple more pages of that, however, and this would have dipped into the wall banger category. Whew!Neutral:The light murder mystery is fairly lame. Mostly it’s just pretty darn obvious who the murderer is and WHY he is murdering. I didn’t mind this so much as it was told well and written well and the dialogue surrounding the murder mystery plot is actually believable. So it equals out to a neutral gray area… it’s not bad but not that great either. The story does indeed HAVE a plot besides the two star nonsense, so there you go.And in the end:Overall this is a solid four star, maybe 3.8 star. The writing is spectacular and accurate, two things I search for without much success when perusing historical romances. The author knows how to deliver a spectacular hero and she can cultivate excellent chemistry between the two main characters. Though the plotline in this one was loose, I could tell it was thoughtful and organized. I am hoping for the same quality of writing in future books…. Maybe a more fluid plot that carries more evenly. Most authors try out different types of heroines, so I’m hoping our next gal is a little less willful. Overall this was a solid read with a few parts (no spoilers, sorry) that were just exceptional and so worth every page. The good parts were very, very, very good! I’m going back for more… I just downloaded Vane and Patience’s book. On to number two!You will like this book if:You like possessive, alpha heroes. Light, vanilla suspense as a backdrop. Stubborn heroine resists marriage. Independent heroine with life plan changes course for love. Large loving family. Wounded heroine.

This is the first Stephanie Laurens book that I read. I got frustrated reading this book. She described everything in painstaking detail. I ended up skimming a lot of the book for this reason. The first person point of view changing from paragraph to paragraph was distracting.The heroine was super annoying with an inflated sense of self importance. She doesn’t want to marry Devil, but she believes that she’s entitled to help solve his murder? Eye roll....I might have been mire sympathetic to her if I knew why she won’t marry him earlier than was stated. And....she doesn’t want to marry him but then got mad at him when he didn’t pay enough attention to her? Another eye roll...I could go on and on with examples of how obnoxious and annoying she was through the novel.And the whole “I won’t marry you/You’re going to marry me” thing got really old. Almost the entire first half of the book is exclusively this interaction between Honoria and Devil. Nothing else happened except a small, little murder that wasn’t really focused on. Another eye roll....I didn’t finish reading the book. I just couldn’t do it.

This book is the reason I returned to the historical romance genre after a decades long hiatus. Beginning with Devil's Bride, the Cynster series sets the gold standard for utterly captivating regency romance. Devil's Bride is exceptional with a well developed plot in keeping with the time period, multidimensional characters that possess strength and emotion, action and adventure, a taste of mystery and suspense, a hot sizzling romance and a funny intimidating demon horse to boot. I loved this story and would rate it 10 stars if possible!

This is my favourite Cynster Novel. I love how Devil and the other Cynster males pop up in all the other stories. Devil's Bride is the first book in an amazing saga. Devil is the alpha, the leader of the Bar Cynster, a group of men, all related, who play hard. Their belief that no woman will ever bring them to their knees is blown out of the water, when one by one, they fall. The other five are stunned, when their leader, Devil, announces he intent to marry after unintentionally compromising a beautiful young woman. Devil's prospective Duchess, however, has no plans to marry, or be ruled by any man, especially a man known as Devil. A battle of the wills ensures. Danger, mayhem, and frustration for one particular male. How the mighty fall. It's a fun and exciting read.

What an excellent resource! I bought this to plan my first trip into the Boundary Waters. It was a great source of information on travel within the Bwca, and gave many suggested detailed routes. It also listed other helpful resources such as how to find an outfitter to rest a canoe from ( and other supplies as needed), and what maps are NEEDED. My adult daughter and I had a great first trip and will be planning another one for next year.

While a long time vet of paddling and trip planning I am new to the BWCA and this book was the first one that layed things out in such a way as to really get a feel for what trips were like. I had rented every book my library had on the subject with any trip descriptions and/or maps (5-6 total) and this was by far the one that felt most useful to me (including the 2 book series split into east and west regions). The descriptions and relative portage difficulty rankings are well written and informative. The maps are more an overview than detailed (using these as your only mapping seems like a pretty bad idea...) but are fine as an overview. Plus they are presented better than the others Id seen in different books. The issue with the routes not being marked at all is a bit of a hassle but i think it is better than covering the maps with "squiggles" since multiple routes are normally described off of each section of map. Overall a highly recommended item that I expect to use as a planning starter over and over.

When i first opened the book I was a bit disappointed cause it didn't have colorful pictures. But as i flipped through it i realized the wealth of information it contained. Its a great book to pair with the Boundary Waters Canoe Camping book (it has pretty pictures and more info on other things you need to know about the boundary waters besides just the portages). This book has all the portage information which is a HUGE help when trying to plan out a trip. This is our first time going to the boundary waters and having a book like this is super helpful in determining routes that we think we can handle. Its easy to navigate through as well because of the index. If you are reading about a portage on the internet or in another book and you want to know what its like all you had to do is find it in the index and you will then know all you need to know about that portage. Its a great reference book and a must have for planning a boundary waters trip.

We're planning a Boy Scout trip to the BWCAW for 2011 and really didn't know much about the area, the routes we wanted to take, fishing, etc. This book covers everything. While it does not cover every possible route a paddler could take it goes into great depth for the more popular ones. It was nice to be able to read about what you might expect in the way of scenery, especially after the Blowdown of 1999 and many of the subsequent fires. It's obvious that the author went to great lengths to try and put the reader right into the area as they read about a location. The one drawback that I did find was that, unless you were actually holding a map of the BWCAW right in front of you while reading, it was hard to figure out where the routes and portages were. It would have been very helpful to have a picture/map associated with each of the routes described so the reader could follow along. Otherwise, this was an exceptional resource.

The detail given in this book regarding entry points,portages,levels of difficulty,and especially the route descriptions are dead on. I have entered the BWCAW at several different points and as I read the route descriptions for these areas it was very easy to visualize my trips all over again. The history of the lakes and general area of each route is also very interesting,especially as you realize the route you are paddling on was used by the first Native Americans,thousands of years ago in dugout canoes made of pine,or by the Voyageurs,the first Europeans of the region. Great reading whether you're planning a trip,using it for reference on a trip or just dreaming !

Well researched, a little older, but information on planning routes is invaluable. Using the NatGeo maps, and websites like BWCA.com, I'm able to really glean a lot of information while planning this summer's adventure into the BWCAW.

This is a very informative map . I can't wait to use it on my upcoming trip to Boundary Waters.
